Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
He has given up the WBC middleweight belt on the grounds that he doesn't want artificial deadlines getting in the way of arranging a fight with GGG. Roughly translated, his team don't want to let him anyway near GGG.
Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
His team seems to lack confidence in his ability to beat GGG
GGG has now been upgraded to full WBC champion.....BJS is the only other person with a major ABC belt at the weight, so if GGG can't get Canelo I imagine that Saunders will be high on his list of other possible opponents.

Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
Just about sums up Alvarez.
Shame really, because the man can fight & he should go on to become on ATG, but this does stink.
Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
Spineless fornicating rat.
The right man is now the champion and I would like to see GGG publicly state that he has zero interest in fighting Canelo, he is going after the belts and the undisputed title, not the money and he has no interest in fighting for just a payday against a coward.

Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
Quelle surprise.
I wish GGG had a bit more suss about him outside the ring, he should be fornicating massive right about now

Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
Exactly this. Will show no one should think they are bigger than boxing. Looks as though Golovkin would have to face Jacobs next as WBA would order this if discussions end for a bout with Canelo. After he deals with Jacobs he should solely focus on the WBO title to achieve his goal of unifying all the belts. The real fans know what Canelo is after this and has put a huge dent in his image and adds to GGG's.davie wrote:Spineless effing rat.

Shameful. So far away from #WhatwouldMarvindo? (Hagler, not Gaye).

I'd also love it if Golovkin told him to do one!davie wrote:Spineless effing rat.

This stinks to high heaven & I can't a believe that a true fighting man like Alvarez would sit back & allow those advising him to make him look like such chump.
Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
This is the statement Alvarez has made on the subject, seems like avoidance to me : Canelo is clearly making a business move here, as, his boxing brain was saying, “let’s put the gloves on right now, and I’m from Mexico, and we don’t f**k around.”
There is an official statement from Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo that reads:
“After much consideration, today, I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and to finalize a deal as quickly as possible. I also informed the WBC that I will vacate its title. For the entirety of my career, I have taken the fights that no one wanted because I fear no man. Never has that been more true than today. I will fight ‘GGG,’ and I will beat ‘GGG’ but I will not be forced into the ring by artificial deadlines. I am hopeful that by putting aside this ticking clock, the two teams can now negotiate this fight, and ‘GGG’ and I can get in the ring as soon as possible and give the fans the fight they want to see.”

Hmmmm, you want to get in the ring as soon as possible, well, you are still within the deadline window, 6 days left to be precise.
This is modern day boxing people. I’m sorry to say.

What an absolute farce. Canelo is nothing but a pawn for Oscar. He's doing what he's told here. Oscar looks a right fuckin hypocrite here. The rant he went on about Cotto giving up the SAME title because of the sanctioning fee!
'It's a disgrace. It's a disgrace to the promotion. It's a disgrace to the sport to do something like that. Every fighter dreams of fighting for the WBC middleweight championship, and to do something like that is a disgrace'
Is it still a DISGRACE Oscar? What an absolute fuckin rancid kunt bag!

Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
Did anyone really think this was not going to happen?
Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
So... I don't follow MW that closely, but is this schedule possible?
Golovkin vs Jacobs
Saunders vs Eubanks jnr 2
Winners of both face off for all the marbles
Canelo, meanwhile, fornicating does one
155lb title bullshit is a thing of the past
This all sounds great to me. We get the MW division back. I have no real interest in the ginger headed muscle dwarf anyway so it's fine for me for him to be out of the picture.

I was just about to post the same thing,Golovkin has always stated he just wants the belts so hopefully he tells Alvarez and Golden Boy to do one and go for Saunders,Canelo's stock surely must plummet amongst the Mexicansdavie wrote:Spineless effing rat.

I agree that Canelo has little choice, he can't do much without his backers, so he has to toe the line.
However, I will temper it with this - I think perhaps they were still in negotiations, but couldn't agree on a purse split within the deadline.
I think this fight will still happen, perhaps not now this year, but next year I think it will.
It's potentially the biggest fight in boxing outside of the heavyweights. Canelo won't make more fighting anyone other than perhaps Pacquaio, and I don't see Pacquaio wanting that fight at this stage of his career.

Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
it will be interesting to see if the titles keep proliferating despite GGG mopping up all the trinkets. I expect the WBA will have at least two other champions anyway.crusader wrote:His team seems to lack confidence in his ability to beat GGG

I think Canelo knows his comments on 'pursuing the fight' despite the ever-so-inconvenient 'ticking clock' of the WBC would come back to haunt him if he doesn't go ahead with this. There's nowhere to hide now, no other opponent to choose that he can conveniently say is the right option for him.
What I don't understand though is why, with the WBC title going to GGG, this means the deadline to make the fight is taken away? Why does the other guy holding the title make a difference to any enforced deadline by the WBC? it's the same fight...
Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
I think it will happen but I don't think it'll happen next. If it does happen next then the fight will end up being for the vacant title as GGG is the number 1 contender anyway. Same as what happened with Cotto. I don't really have a problem with Canelo. He turned pro at 14/15 so he's obviously not scared of anyone. Oscar is just a hypocritical twat. Loved him as a fighter but dislike him more and more nowadays.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Stuarty30 wrote:What an absolute farce. Canelo is nothing but a pawn for Oscar. He's doing what he's told here. Or will GGG now be upgraded to full champ? I forgot he had the interim title?
Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
Would be ideal if all this happened. However with Eubank jr re-signing with Matchroom yesterday the Saunders rematch ain't happening anytime soon.clopixolacuphase wrote:So... I don't follow MW that closely, but is this schedule possible?

Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
Fancy winning a world title and then being expected to defend it against that governing body's mandatory challengers within an allotted time frame ?
Is that how being a world champion works? wow I didn't know that, so obviously canelo and GBP didn't either !
We shall now have to give them the benefit of the doubt after this revelation...

Re: Alvarez has given up his WBC belt
Because previously, the deadline was enforced, and the penalty was having to relinquish the belt. That is now gone, so the deadline is gone. GGG has the belt, and has to have a mandatory I believe next.Riddick Blowe wrote:it will be interesting to see if the titles keep proliferating despite GGG mopping up all the trinkets. Absolutely NO way. Golovkin hits well and he hits hard but he’s not leaving men cold like some decapitator. No way in the world is he the * insert sissy coward pussy hole disgrace * that people are saying here
