David Haye should fight a top HW next, not old Briggs

Being mostly out of the gym for 5 years has probably had a negative affect on his abilities and I didn't think that he was particularly brilliant as a heavyweight in the first place.

Haye's run at heavyweight was never spectacular. Pulev would quite possibly be Haye's best win at heavyweight if he could beat him.

Haye is a blown up cruiserweight, he's hardly fought in recent years and he would have avoided fighters like Pulev 8 years ago as well.

Haye should not be fighting opponents like Pulev unless there is a lot of money on the line.

I agree he's never been that great a heavyweight, that's for sure. He was lucky he was in a piss-weak era and could snuggle a belt from Valuev, his performance against Wlad showed his true place.

I agree. He's not been in any wars, not been bashed up or knocked out. Plus he has only fought 30 times, averaging only 4 rounds per fight. No reason why he should fall into a massive decline aged 35, he looks after himself diet wise and doesn't get out of shape which all helps.

Haye's got way less miles on the clock than most heavyweights at top level his age, and he's already had two tune up fights.

I suspect he isn't that serious, and is more interested in the payday, though I'm sure he wouldn't mind a title either.

Yeah the Briggs fight is a joke but to be fair to Haye he isn't trying to build it up more than it is. I'm talking about non-title fights. I'm sure if Haye was offered a title eliminator he would grab it regardless of the opponent. My point being no one else seems to be calling Haye out.

They are going to build this up as if Briggs was one of the most dangerous heavyweights in the world, banging on about his KO streak, him being a former world champ etc. They won't mention the fact his last world title challenge was 8 years ago and put him in hospital, or that he's been fighting absolute scrubs in the last few years.

I won't be surprised at all if this is hyped up as a megaevent and put on PPV.

If they can fill arenas with the shite that Haye has been offering thus far, it's not beyond the realms of possibility. I do wonder how many people would shell out for it though. Maybe if it was 5 quid, who knows?

Hope they don't make it PPV. I think it's an 80/20 fight in Haye's favour at best. Probably similar to the odds that In my head I had given for the Eubank Jnr, Nick Blackwell fight. Not nearly as bad as Haye's last two fights, but on paper it is not worthy of PPV. But perhaps the casuals will buy it. He may make more money short term - but the damage to his legacy will be significant. It says a lot when mainstream newspapers are calling your comeback a sham. If it's on free TV I could forgive it.

80/20 is way too generous to Briggs

There's a reason he's fought nothing but total scrubs over the last several years, rather than earning a big fight with decent wins. If he tried that he'd probably be exposed for what he is; a totally shot 44 year old who was put in intensive care the last time he fought a good opponent (6 years ago!). The most interesting thing for me about the fight is whether he'll start gasping for air during the first or second minute of the opening round.

It shows how far out of his depth he was when he stopped fighting scrubs, and a beating that sends a man to intensive care is one that may well have long-term negative impacts and increase susceptibility to further injury. Now it's 6 years and 0 wins over credible opponents later, and some knowledgeable fans are actually starting to buy into this joke of a fight because the old man knocked over some more bums and talked a lot, just like he did before his hospital stint.

Even about 10 years ago he boxed like a slow, plodding oaf and was outclassed by Sultan Ibragimov.

Vitali is just a little better than a scrub is he?

Briggs was sent to hospital because he was too tough to be stopped and the ref and corner refused to stop the fight when they should have.

Vitali would have stopped Haye.

Vitali was a very good fighter, but Sultan Ibragimov was pretty ordinary in my view and he still managed to outclass slow, plodding, heavy-breathing Briggs almost a decade ago.

If Briggs and his team had any confidence in his abilities I don't think they would've exclusively feasted on such dreadful opposition since the Vitali beating; his opponents make Dennis Bakhtov, the toughest foe Arnie beat, look like a monster.
