David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
So whats the deal with this title? I thought Keith Thurman was the WBA welterweight champ. Seems a bit odd. Can anyone explain?
Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
I don't know but I was drunk last night and put a bunch of money on mosley. I hope this avansey dude is horrible.
Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
He is good at baiting fighters in and has decent cumulative pop and early pop vs lower opposition.

I particularly like the body work he has.

Looks like he is decently durable and always did good in step ups and on the road.

That made me chuckle.

I missed the first but have Avanesyan clearly winning the five rounds since. He's much sharper and is landing the lead right continually.
Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
That's what I'm thinking. Mosely should not be boxing anymore. Used to be one of my favourite fighters but he's lost nearly every aspect of his game that made him who he was. Very ordinary nowadays.crusader wrote:I missed the first but have Avanesyan clearly winning the five rounds since. He's much sharper and is landing the lead right continually.

Why is Duran in Moselys corner??? Is he training him or is it a gimmick?
Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
The correct man won there. The 114-113 card was a joke.
Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
Ya, too close for my liking.Stuarty30 wrote:The correct man won there. The 114-113 card was a joke.
Of the 11 rounds I saw I gave 10 to Avanesyan and had 1 even (I was going to give it to Mosley but he lost a point). DA is the mandatory for the Porter-Thurman winner, and while he's a fairly good technician I don't think he stands much of a chance there.
Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
Mosley needs to call it a career.
I thought the scorecards could have been close, although I wasn't keeping score. Mosley could have won some rounds at the start and end of the fight.\
The Porter/Thurman winner could face Avanesy right after their fight and probably win in the first half of the fight. He seems pretty pedestrian and I don't think will bother either man too much.

Mosley was going through the motions there. Looked old and stiff.
Avanesy is a sneaky one, probably a converted southpaw. He can hit and will make some noise in the division, without a doubt.

No disrespect but it was really odd seeing Carl Greaves in the company of Mosley and Duran.

I thought 114-113 was the best card. I had it 115-112 for the winner. Mosley did well for his age and this is Russia's best WW.
Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
Shane was getting picked off and outlanded in almost every round, and I don't see any fair basis for giving him more than a couple of them. I think a lot of people gave him sentimental bonus points, but thankfully the right man won and two judges saw it as the fairly one-sided fight it was.
I hear the commentators were up Shane's ass too, and this is the type of fight I'd like people to rewatch without their influence, because watching without sound and having no preference as to who won it didn't look close at all.

I had the Russian boy winning most of the rounds. A 114-113 card would suggest the fight was close and I didn't see this contest as close.Tony1244 wrote:Stuarty30 wrote:The correct man won there. The 114-113 card was a joke.

Shane did a good job for his age but he lost and deserved to lose a fairly close fight.
I agree with you about the commentators. They were talking about Mosley working his jab at a time when, you guessed it, Shane was not working his jab. Perhaps the 117-111s were correct. I do believe there were a lot of close rounds.
Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
I had it 116-111. There were some rounds where Mosley was busier, but wasn't really landing much.
This was my first time watching Avanesyan. Perhaps he was cautious because he knew that would work against Mosely, but based on what I saw I don't give him much chance against Thurman/Porter.

I know I'm just basing it off one fight, but I didn't think he looked like a top 10 Welter. I'd have to sit down and see if he makes top 20, honestly...crow wrote:

Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
I don't have him Top 10 right now. I only had him winning 114-113 over Shane personally. So yeah that doesn't suggest he's gonna go too much further. The Shane win will likely remain his best win.armageto wrote:I know I'm just basing it off one fight, but I didn't think he looked like a top 10 Welter. I actually thought the commentary was atrocious but not the scoring of any of the judges as so many of the rounds were close.

Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
I had Carl Greaves's boy winning 117-111.
Mosley has lost the edge in speed. I hope he either retires or boxes at a far lesser level.
Avanesyan looks a good fighter. He's not going to be top level but looks fringe world and will be good value for money in the next few years.
One thing I did rate was Durans cornerwork. He definetly wasn't there as a gimmick. The moment he shouted at Shane to look at him and listen really got Shane's attention.

Re: David Avanesy vs Shane Mosley for interim WBA welterweight title
I personally had it 114-113, but I felt like Avanesyan won the rounds he won a lot more clearly. 117-110 seemed wide to me. 115-112 or 116-111 for Ava would make more sense.Stuarty30 wrote:I had the Russian boy winning most of the rounds.
