Has anyone here ever met Tommy Hearns?

Post by Tantum »

Tommy Hearns seems like one of the coolest, nicest boxers in history, I wonder if anyone here has met him in person. If so, lay down the story :D

I've met him a few times, he seems like a very nice guy, always smiling. However I could never understand a word he said, a combination of his accent and his voice being very slurred.

Nope, not a word, Harold "The Shadow" Knight would interpret what he said.

Yes i've met The Hit Man, in the Golden Gloves Gym in Vegas the year before last.

We pulled up outside the gym and my business partner said "is that Tommy Hearns over there?" i replied "i dont think so, but it would great if it was."

As i got closer i realized that it was indeed the legendary five times World Champion.

We all went inside as Mike Tyson was finishing his workout accompanied by Mike McCallum, Jeff Fenech and the Japanese wrestler Anoki, who fought Ali.

After Tyson's workout all the guys posed for photo's, some of which are on my web site http://www.ukboxingmanager.com.
Tommy and i went nose to nose for a stare down photograph. ( I think i had him worried ! )

When they all realized we were from Britain they cracked a few jokes about a certain British promoter with whom Tyson had done business a few years back.

The Hit Man is a terrific guy, after Hagler he was my favourite fighter of the 80's and it was a honour to meet him.

A day i will remember for a long time.

I actually used to chill with his son Ron back in school a bit...mad chill kid, spitting image of his daddy, maybe a shade darker, nose a little bit straighter...

He was a gentleman just like his daddy too, with a silly side. Tommy came down to one of Ron's games one time to see him play basketball, real chill. Ron actually is starting to focus on boxing now and i think he had his second amateur fight a month or so ago. Not sure what weight but probably around welter or junior middle...he's lanky and rangy just like Tommy...i'm interested to see if he sticks with it and how far he'll go....

I've never met any of the great boxers, and I'm kinda glad I haven't! I've heard people talk about meeting their idols before, and it always seems to be kind of disappointing as opposed to their expectations. Like if I met Big George or Tyson or Tua, I dunno, what would I say? IMO it would be kinda like meeting Jimmy Page of Led Zeppellin, I'd probably stumble all over my words to say something, and end up making a fool of myself, maybe saying, "Stairway to Heaven" is a great song! Duh!
