Your favourite Muhammad Ali moment, memory or quote

Post by Ricky_ »

Absolutely remarkable man. His career spanned before my time but i've watched pretty much every documentary and piece of footage of Ali i could find.

Hanging in my office is a huge framed A1 poster that hangs above my desk with the quote;

"Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill."

Throwing his Olympic medal in the Ohio river and refusing to go to Vietnam to fight for a country that treated his people like a 3rd class citizen.

So many to choose from.

My favourite memory is the post fight press conference after the third Frazier fight, when he said, "Joe Frazier is the greatest of all-time, next to me".

I thought that was a great moment as these two had damn near killed each other in the pursuit of glory.

It was Ali recognising what Smokin' Joe had given & maybe making amends for some of the unwarranted things he'd said previously.

Ali encouraging the crowds in Africa to sing 'Ali Bomaye' no other sports personality could have that kind of effect across the planet.

something very very special.

Parky was a blimp...but he did attempt to speak for the ugly face of white mainstream ideology in the 70's...so it is always nice to watch the time when Ali ate him for breakfast

It must be mentioned -- refusing the draft. Very bold, and of course he was highly quotable when he talked about it.

The Olympic thing is a well known myth, Alj admitted it himself.

But it definitely took guts to oppose the draft.

My favorite memory of Ali was when he and I slapped box for about 15-20 seconds at a luncheon at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City in 1984. he was doing magic tricks for the university boxers that were competing that night and he was being honored. he then started slap boxing a heavyweight and I started saying left hook, left hook, Frazier hit him with a left hook and he turned to me and we messed around for the few seconds. i wish somebody had a camera back then.
RIP Champ!

When Howard Cosell was interviewing both Ali and Frazier in the studio. Frazier attacked Ali and Cosell was in the middle of it. That was one of many.

Howard Cosell: You are being quite truculent.

Ali: Whatever truculent means if its good, I'm that.

I’ve tussled with a whale.
I done handcuffed lightning
And throw thunder in jail.
You know I’m bad.
just last week, I murdered a rock,
Injured a stone, Hospitalized a brick.
I’m so mean, I make medicine sick.”
Never under stood any of it till i had the internet, i have made up my own version to that

The one Liston poem or rhyme from what I recall went something like this

If Sonny wants to run he will go in one
If that don't do he will go in two
If he keep talking about me he will go in three
If he hurt me like Moore he will go in four
And if he keep talking jive he will go in five
If it was a fix he will go in six
If he wants to go to heaven I'll get him in seven
If it goes eight Sonny must be great

When was the last time that Ali could give a coherent interview does anyone know? I have been looking over the last 30 years back to 1986 and I am having difficulty finding one. Can someone tell me when it was and who did the interview and year. Thank you.

I'm sure at least two of those shots land, still great though.
