Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Liam Smith to Matchroom?
A few things happened this week that makes me feel he's maybe on the bring of joining his brothers.
Watched a few interviews with Tony Bellew this week on SKY where Tony was saying things along the lines of "It's time Liam got the recognition and exposure he deserves". (Not an exact quote, just paraphrasing.)
In the post fight interview Joe Gallagher mentioned they want Kell Brook next which put allegedly into a bit of a rant. allegedly was promising a massive fight next for Smith this Autumn but wouldn't commit to who he is in talks with.
I've seen this kind of thing playing out before in recent years with allegedly fighters. Contract running down, being matched in uninspiring fights, potential big money spinning PPV fight domestically with Matchroom fighter etc...

Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
I was thinking the same thing. It does point that way, and frankly I am sick and tired of the cynical trick of serving up crap whilst name-dropping the top fighters in the division. There is an old adage, don't go by what they say, go by what they do. Fwank talks of Corolla or unification fights but serves up fana. He talks of Canelo and kell brook but serves up inept unknowns. He has done it time after time after time, remember when Nathan cleverly was always one fight away from a big fight with Hopkins ? Fwank is lucky that a lack of depth in the British promotional ranks keeps him as second top dog, behind Eddie, because he is in serious decline and it's only his boxing channel that keeps him second. If another promoter got a good tv deal they could soon overtake fwank. Liam smith deserves better exposure and better opposition, he must know he is selling himself short at the moment.

As far as I'm aware, he seems happy and content with FW.
At the end of the day, he's been able to deliver a world title shot which he duly grabbed with both hands.
I remember Smith saying a while ago when the question was put to him about joining his brothers at Matchroom (think it was on twitter) and he basically said he wasn't a sheep who follows others and was happy.
You can see though that he's itching for a BIG fight that and the onus is on FW to deliver.

Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
His contract ran out not so long ago and everyone expected him to move but he signed a new contract. Dunno how long for tho. Defo seems like Frank was trying his best to promise him a big fight.
Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Plenty of fights to be made in this division. That dumpling on Saturday had no business being in the same arena as Smith. Very disappointing night of boxing.
Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Liams probably had ample oppurtunity to join matchroom he has 3 bros there of course this topic will of come up between the smith family and close friends many times and the fact that hes still with fr4nk says it all really.
Liams probably more than happy with what fr4nks delivering cash wise and when ever his bros are on sky shows he always gets mentioned.
Allso swifty jumped ship and had he stayed put hed prob have a belt by now

Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
How can he leave someone who has given him such an easy route through to a world title, such an easy world title match and such easy defenses ? He has not even broken sweat yet.mark a h wrote:Liams probably had ample oppurtunity to join matchroom he has 3 bros there of course this topic will of come up between the smith family and close friends many times and the fact that hes still with fr4nk says it all really.

Easy answer.

That dumpling on Saturday is the highest ranking boxer that Smith has faced - no.81.Stuarty30 wrote:Plenty of fights to be made in this division. That dumpling on Saturday had no business being in the same arena as Smith. Very disappointing night of boxing.

That is poor if that's the case. The guys a world champion. That guy shouldn't have been in the same ring as Smith.BigDoofus wrote:That dumpling on Saturday is the highest ranking boxer that Smith has faced - no.81.Stuarty30 wrote:Plenty of fights to be made in this division. Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
It's a matter of time really. Same story with Flanagan. Because of the Sky TV deal and the money/crowds/fame that brings of course the bigger Warren fighters will be casting envious glances over to Matchroom - it's human nature. Every other domestic promoter is suffering the same.
Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
I don't know the ins and outs of the money deals, and it can appear that Matchroom guys gets the glitter and the wealth, but both Billie Joe Saunders and Tyson Fury have talked about getting well looked after financially by MH and FW respectively.
The whole Matchroom & sky exclutivity deal is a double edged sword in that one a positive it does let one promoter get a very solid base to plan from. On the other side it creates an unhealthy monopoly situation.
I get the impression Eddie Hearn is the best promoter in terms of generating PR, especially around the younger generation.

Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Mr Silver Spoon would have to be an absolute moron having been handed a Sky deal on a plate not to make a success of it.
So would any of the British Promoters.
Hennessey hasn't made Fury wealthy.
Fury has made Fury wealthy.
In fact Fury has made Hennessey wealthy !

Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Tyson Fury doesn't need a promoter.
Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Eddie is clearly trying to bag the remaining Smith. He had a long rant about him in his interview and was unequivocal about what he thinks who should represent him. Then there was a Warren interview where he said how great Liam was doing compared to his older brothers on the side. I think a tug of war is going on.
Liam has title but he has no recognition and no big fights. Unless Warren is able to deliver big names soon like Cotto or Alvarez, he will be thinking of switching sides. One should think, thats the reason why Eddie wont let Brook fight happen as well.
I dont know details of his contract, but if it allows him I can see Liam leaving the fish eyes and joining his bros to the hip side of the UK boxing.

The details of trout's lawsuit against the wbo make interesting reading. Apparently trout disappeared from their rankings (an 'oversight') just long enough to let in smith and Thompson for the vacant title.
Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Smith declined to fight for the title when Andrade was champion before this. The Trout situation was a disgrace as are a lot of the WBO rankings.JimJim2009 wrote:The details of trout's lawsuit against the wbo make interesting reading. Do your research and have a look back at how many times Wazza got the WBO to manipulate their rankings.
Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Smith's promoter claimed on IFL that he was an announcing a "BIG" fight for him this week. With less than 7 hours to go I am struggling to contain my excitement.

Re: Liam Smith to Matchroom?
Allegedly fighters do have this amazing habit of winning their WTs via the Vacant WBO method. Before Saunders who was the last to win a World title against a champion?
