Jose Luis Ramirez lost a split decision to Arguello?

Post by The Keed »

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jose_Luis_Ramirez

"After his move in weight to the Lightweights, Ramirez met another boxing legend inside a ring, when he fought Alexis Arguello. Ramirez dropped Arguello in round six, but lost a ten round split decision in Miami."

I wish I could find a copy of this fight somewhere, but I don't know anyone who has it.

Does anyone know any details about this fight? Miami was kind of Arguello's home turf, so a split decision win there sounds kind of fishy. Does anyone know if the decision was controversial?

And does anyone know anyone who has this fight on tape?

Arguello-Ramirez

Post by Rafael »

Keed, I have this fight in pretty good shape. It was a tough tightly contested match where Arguello hit the mat from a perfect left hand counter by Ramirez. Alexis had trouble with Ramirez's lef-handed style and strength throughout, but gutted it out in the stretch-run to even things out. IMO, the decision could have legitimately gone either way. I distinctly remember that Arguello was a nervous wreck at the time the decision was announced!

You must have a pretty decent collection to come up with that one! I never saw it, but I know it was just before he came over here, to smash up poor Jim Watt - I remember one London paper actualy picked Watt to win! He never lived that one down :D

I did see his fight before Ramirez though, when he beat up a young fighter from the UK, via Uganda, and thrown in very deep - Boza Edwards

Arguello-Watt

Post by Rafael »

The Watt fight is perhaps Arguello's best tactical masterpiece. He controlled the distance and used counter-punching with perfection (the punch that dropped Watt was pinpoint accurate and did not travel more that 12 inches). I believe Watt could have done better by doing what Ramirez did, i.e., put more pressure on Alexis, but fought at too measured a pace to bother a cool customer like the Thin Man. Also, as you well recall, Cornelius Boza Edwards was pretty much a novice at the time. He would move on to bigger and better things and make a name for himself down the road. The body attack Arguello put on Boza was brutal.

Yes Boza eventualy became the role model for Arturo Gatti, every fight a complete war. Mickey Duff threw his young fighter in with a modern legend but it seemed to pay off in the end.

Watt just didn't have the same fire power as Ramirez, he was fairly light punching so couldn't push Arguello back. Had to try and outbox him but that was never going to work.
I can still picture his bruised and battered face at the end of 15 long rounds.
Just got hold of Arguello/Ganigan which I haven't seen in 10 years, I'll watch it tonight as both hit the canvas in a great fight I remember

Arguello-Ganigan

Post by Rafael »

Arguello-Ganigan is yet another example of Arguello having trouble with a strong, aggressive southpaw. Ganigan had a lot of power at 135 (watch his KO over Sean O'Grady).

A fight I've trying to get a hold of is Watt-Buchanan. So far, I've only found it in highlight form. What's your take on that one?

I saw Ganigan/O'Grady which was a shocker at the time, Sean defending his Dad's WAA title!

Think I saw Buchanan/Watt years ago, but probably the BBC just showed highlights as was their habit - Kenny just too good for Watt, but Jim was always a difficult opponent against even he very best.
His defence against Charlie Nash from Ireland was memorable.

Did he just walk through Boza? I never saw the fight (yet), but I had read that Boza gave him a good fight and got stopped on cuts. I was even thinking of getting the fight on tape, but if Arguello just walked through him I don't think I'll bother.

Incidentally, Boza was also a southpaw.

Arguello-Boza

Post by Rafael »

I would not say that Arguello "walked-through him." It was a typical Arguello chop-down job. He put a methodical beating on him, especially to the body. Boza had his moments and did not disgrace himself, especially considering he was a novice of sorts.

Did you happen to see Arguello's fight with Limon? Did it go down like terap described it?

Limon-Arguello

Post by Rafael »

Limon did hit Arguello with some good overhand lefts and was competitive throughout, but I believe Arguello was the ring general (the fight was being contested by and large at his pace) and he hit Limon with a lot of hard punches too. I suppose one could quarrel with the stoppage, but in addition to being badly cut, it was fairly obvious that Limon was starting to weaken and get easier to hit at the time the fight was halted.

P.S. Just my opinion, Terap. No need to swing back.... :-?

terap wrote:For me, Arguello vs. Watt represented the decline of the level of the lightweight "championship."

Watt would never have gotten near the lightweight championship in earlier years.

How long would Watt have lasted with Ike Williams?

The fact that Arguello had to fight as carefully as he did against Watt showed me that in earlier years Argello would not have made it as a lightweight champion.
What a ludicrous statement. A fighter can only be the best of his time. It wasn't Arguello or Watt's fault they were born when they were.

Arguello-Watt

>> The fact that Arguello had to fight as carefully as he did against Watt showed me that in earlier years Argello would not have made it as a lightweight champion.

Benny, Arguello always fought carefully, and went for the KO if the right conditions were there. He was fighting in Watt's turf, had had problems with southpaws before, and still dominated him winning the vast majority of the rounds. Plus Watt was no slouch; coming off some good wins over O'Grady, Howard Davis, and Pitalua. IMO, Arguello used the right approach, and would have gone for the kill had the sturdy Watt shown signs of fading down the stretch. Would Arguello have been competitive with other lightweight champions in history? Maybe, maybe not. That's an entirely separate thread. But to draw a negative answer to this question from the Watt fight is a stretch.

P.S. Have a great day! 8)

I am not sure the moderators here would be alright with that. In any event, I am reluctant to make my work the focal point of any discussion on these boards, so what I have been doing is e-mailing or providing a link to my stuff to those who privately request it to me.

Hey there. I e-mailed you the link to your account. There is some math in the article (it's a way of showing-off in my profession), but you can just bypass it and focus on the introduction, results, and conclusions. That will be enough to get the meat of the paper. Enjoy!

It was a good fight, Boza showed his potential as a future champ and put up a very good fight, till Alexis' brutal bodyshots got to him late.

I just watched Arguello / Ganigan again for the first time in about 10 years - what an excellent fight itg is.
The Great Arguello is on the floor in the 1st, but comes back in the next few rounds to start breaking up Ganigan, but as he moves in for the kill is hurt again.
The body shots he finaly gets Ganigan out with are as hard as you'll ever see. :o

Howard Davis Jr. may have given Arguello all he could handle, provided the fight lasted into the late rounds.

I, too, have a copy of Ramirez/Arguello. For years I had thought Alexis was down twice in the fight; seeing it again refreshed my memory but after watching it a time or two I thought Rmirez had beemn robbed. Recently I watched it for the first time in a year and it seemed a very close fight, though I still favored Ramirez. I also have Arguello/Limon and, while Limon never quit trying and he did land the wingingwild left he threwa number of times, he took a prodigious beating as Arguello kept him outside at the end of his punches, robbing Limon of his inside, anything goews type of fight.
Andy Ganigan was a favorite of mine when I was young; he and Gato Gonzalez had a fight (won by Gonzalez by SD, rallying to core 3 late kds after going down early and losing 5 of the first 6 rounds) well worth watching if you come across a copy. When that fight was announced I couldn't stand to wait, like it was Chistmas or something, and I'd have given anything to go to see it. As it was I sat glued to an LA tv station, waiting as ptintly as possible for the late news and the sports report. Went to bed disappointed.
