R.I.P. Muhammad Ali

I have certainly been one of Ali's biggest critics but I clearly understand that his career accomplishments are incredible and, based on accomplishments, he is likely top 5 all-time among the HWs. However, like Mike Tyson, he really transcended boxing because he developed a larger than life personality and endlessly fascinated the world. People who didn't even watch sports knew who he was. Much respect to the champ and may Allah (swt) grant him jannah and comfort his family in this difficult time.

No, he was no Mike Tyson, Klitschko, or Foreman in the power department but Ali could hit some.

Ron Lyle and Oscar Bonavena were not easy to knockout, and Ali stopped them.

How so, he never had KO power...

George Foreman was only knocked out only once in a career spanning 81 fights...by Muhammad Ali. Ali has 37 knockouts in 56 wins. 37 KO's in 61 Total fights. That's a knockout percentage somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 to 65% I think...it doesn't make Ali the greatest puncher of all time, but it certainly suggests he could hit.

His style contributed more to his lack of knockout power than anything. It's hard to knock people out as you're moving away from them, but he even did that his share of times. You could definitely tell the difference between the power in his shots when he was going for a KO or when he was just trying to outbox a guy and slap him around a little bit.

Foreman was ok, he was just gassed physically and mentally. I actually think he made the count too but he didn't want any more.

To say Ali didn't have power is ridiculous. He hit with spite when he wanted and knew when a guy was for he talking. He didn't have Lennox or Tyson type power... sure... but i usually think guys who have devastating 1punch ko power lack in a few other areas.

I am still struggling to come to the realisation Ali is gone. Even with his ailing health it seemed he would live forever.

Ali imo had the best chin ever and amazing ability to withstand bodyshots, ernie shavers failed to knock him out and he hit Ali flush several times

It has probably been mentioned here and other places already, but Ali was predominantly a head hunter. He rarely went to the body. Particularly in his later fights.

Shavers hit him with a right at the end of round 2 that would have floored an elephant. I do think shavers won that fight.

Many were so impressed with Ali's other outstanding attributes they paid little attention to his ability to take a punch. But it was second to very few. He fought some of the biggest punchers in the history of the heavyweight division and kept his feet time and again when hit by bombs that would have stopped others.
