It still counted as a title defense for GGG. The champ doesn't get penalized if the challenger doesn't make weight. The champion loses the title if he doesn't make weight -- but the challenger can still win it.

If you are going to compare his acheivements in a historical context, then you must level the playing field somewhat. He does not hold the same middleeight title that Hagler and Monzon held. He may prove to be as good a fighter, but I don't see 16 defenses in the historical sense of the term, champion. Not his fault, just saying title defenses should at least sometimes come against guys at the top of the division in question.

He has 16 defenses of HIS middleweight title. He has zero defenses of THE middleweight title.....again, not necessarily his fault.

GGG has 16 Title defenses against the best guys who would face him in a ring -- making him the de facto Middleweight Champion... If You're the Lineal Middleweight Champion, fighting anyone but Gennady Golovkin, you're a chump champion.

All of them, it's this era of multiple titles and lineal is archaic. I'd never use any modern record historically, but his defenses are as legit as any other fighter. He beat better fighters fighters than Wlad ever has.
