Confirmation of Early Ezzard Charles Bout

I read with interest the Wik Encyclopedia note on Ezzard Charles's 1940 record. Perhaps manager Bert Williams embellished his fighter's record, but some of the fights may just have the wrong dates.

The Charles fight that's in the Ring Record Book as:

Apr 2, 1940 Charley Banks, Cincinnati, W 6

really took place on May 20, 1940. It was on the undercard of the Herschel Joiner vs. Johnny "KO" Stevens fight before 5,000 at the Music Hall Arena at Cincinnati.

This is according to The Chicago Defender (National Ed.), June 1, 1940, p. 23.
