Respect to Burns
Respect to Burns
Put in a good effort tonight and I had it scored much closer than the judges did, 118-110 from Micky Vann was very harsh, I don't think they gave him enough credit for what he did in the fight. I see Burns being a future EBU champion. He'll have learned more from this brave defeat than 10 more wins in 60:40 fights in his favour and he was very positive in his after match interview about what he took away from the fight, funnily enough he also didn't even have a mark on his face even though Arthur did have a bit of swelling.
Anyone else think ITV were knobs trying to speak to McCullough while he was working in the corner, he was trying to give Arthur instructions and he had someone trying to interview him, you could tell by McCulloughs body language he didn't want to be disturbed while working. High praise from Arthur as well with him saying McCullough is the best trainer he has worked with and doesn't want to do anything without Wayne, this coming from a fighter who seems to change trainers every fight.

Yeah, good posts. The after fight intervew with McCullough showed what Arthur was all about, IMO. All his words seem hollow to me. I actually think you could plonk down a mirror in front of him and he'd deny his reflection. Even during one of the rounds, when the mic was jammed under his nose, he was answering Wayne with pleasantries but you could tell he was thinking his own thoughts. He's a complete narcissist all out for himself - and this is what has (and likely always will) hold him back.

I find it hard to understand why people dislike Arthur. He comes across as a likeable and amiable guy who listens to his trainers. I've never heard him bad mouth anyone. He was very complimentary toward McCullough and I've no axe to grind with the man.Manos de Oro wrote:Yeah, good posts. The after fight intervew with McCullough showed what Arthur was all about, IMO. Conversely, James Toney is one of the most obnoxious pudenda I've ever seen at press conferences yet this is put down as 'entertaining' and 'livening up' the heavyweight division. I don't mind it but let's play fair.

Yes I think you're right. Still, I like Arthur & think he's good for the game. Don't have to worry about Barrera - SN wont throw him to the wolves just yet. More like a vacant shot hopefully, or that Argentine champ doesn't look the best we've ever seen ( teak tough though ).Manos de Oro wrote:Yeah, good posts. And full respect to Ricky Burns - thought he was excellent for a boxer with so little pro experience. He definitely has the heart of a champion.
Where did ITV find that Gabriel bloke who did the interviews? WHAT a plonker. Trying to interview Wayne between rounds was a real low point. Don't think I've ever seen a commentator dumb enough to try that before.
Get rid of him quick!

I know what you mean too. Like I say, I do like Arthur, but understand why he's not too popular in the UK. Problem is, he obviously loves himself a bit too much for the UK public to warm to him. You can just about get away with it here if you do it with a bit of humour: Naz, Eubank - and Toney in the US etctolstoy wrote: I find it hard to understand why people dislike Arthur. But Alex says things like "my brilliant skills" with a straight face - and that never goes down well over here - rightly or wrongly.
Burns has the heart of a champion, and I think he will one day capture some titles. He could have beaten Sinistin and I would favour him over Docherty.
However, he won't go to the top - lacks the power and is not elusive enough. He already belongs in European title class but I cannot see him improving enough to go beyond that.

thought burns blocked a lot of shots and arthur was very dirty at times, rubbing inner side of the glove up his face, low shots and butting. at the end though burns had the face of a winner and arthur looked pretty beaten up. arthur showed his expeirance by pushing on even after losing a couple of early rounds while burns slowed during the mid rounds and his legs couldn't keep him out of trouble as much. full respect to burns as he seems the kind of guy who would fight anyone and will only get better. arthur will find a world title but what version and against who?
Well the sooner he gets his hands on a version of the title the more incentive Scott Harrison has in moving up and we may have a domestic super fight on our hands.
Maybe the winner of Barrios/Nagy or what is the story with the WBA title? They still have Vicente Mosquera listed as their champ but he hasn't defended the belt in his last 2 fights and his last fight was against a 2-0 novice, Arthur is more deserving than that surely?

Good credit to Burns. He's only 22 and he's tough as fook, brought with him a great crowd and contributed really well to making it a good fight and atmsophere.
Shades of the Earl fight, Burns died off after 6 or 7 - great shame. But despite Arthur pretty much dominating three-quarters of the fight - at certain stages Burns showed Arthur up a bit (some lovely left hooks that he made Arthur eat). And as somebody has already mentioned Burns didnt have a mark on him at the end, while Arthur looked a bit puffy around the face.
Great effort by Ricky Burns.

I had the fight level after 6 rounds, and thought it was an excellent fight up until Burns started tiring from Arthur's body shots. He put in an excellent performance, I thought, and showed some real skills at times. If he could only work on his punching technique and add a bit of power to his finesse, he could well win a European or fringe world title. In the meantime, a fight between him and Limond, though hardly explosive, would be a good one for the purists.

Burns hasn't got the punch to stop someone of Mitchells talent but I do think he'd beat him on points alright, Mitchell is increasingly getting exposed with every fight now as an EBU level at best fighter.probox wrote:i think we need to get frank to pair burns with mitchell and give us a treat to watch.
