Is Thurman The Belt Welterweight Today?

Post by bnovelist »

We have Spence Jr, Brook, Garcia, Broner, and Porter but in terms of high IQ Thurman seems above the rest. As a betting man something is telling

me to bet on Keith Thurman to rule the WW division...Ali had a great IQ, Mayweather had a great IQ, so I'm leaning towards Thurman. :OhYes:

The "belt" welterweight? You shouldn't post when you are drunk.

No, Timothy Bradley is #1.

Jumping to Spence at this point is like saying Beterbiev is the best at 175.
Maybe ... but not enough evidence.

1. Bradley
2. Thurman
3. Brook
4. Garcia
5. Porter
6. Spence
7. Vargas
8. Peterson

This list looks easy because it used to be headed by Mayweather and Manny.
But, no active fighter easily beats any of the top 6 here.
I'm not sure the winner of Crawford/Postol does either.

Putting Spence at 6 is nuts... Spence would destroy Bradley and Garcia... Spence and Brook are the 2 top Welterweights... I like Thurman for #3 and Porter 4. The Thurmanator is a great fighter and he would beat Floyd and Pacquiao. But we'll see Thurman in a supremely tough fight directly. Porter-Thurman is an even matchup -- but I don't like the way Thurman came across in the TV promos where he called Porter a "bum whom I'm going to treat like any other bum." He almost choked on the second bum so I can tell he doesn't believe it. He made himself look bad and I'm sure Porter noticed the catch in his voice. That gives you confidence.

We should know the answer after this summer.

I'm a big fan of Thurman. If he beats Porter he's definitely Number 1 for now.

If Porter wins then it's all open.

Brook v Vargas will answer many questions. A big win for either puts them up there.

Spence looks like a star in the making. Funny to think that he's only a year younger than Thurman.

Danny Garcia has been underdog in a few big fights & won them all handily. He seems to be doing a Calzaghe at the moment though.

I'd love to see Aussie boy Jeff Horn in a decent match up.

The winner of Crawford & Postol could also be in for a shot & both have shown top skills.

All in all there are a lot of options - which is great, as long as they meet up.

p.s. in a weird off beat world I also think that Bradley Skeete could cause an upset or two - although he's definitely NOT number one.

No, not Skeete... He's got nothing going.. but Egidijus Kavaliauskas is 13-0 and just shut out Deniz Ilbay. He hits like Golovkin and is another super tough and strong guy. In another year, if he can get the right fights, he'll be in the mix. The Welterweight Division right now is the strongest division I've ever seen, so it's going to be real interesting when some these potential fights Like Brook-Spence actually happen.

Your other personality thinks that Spence is the "belt" welterweight today. I appreciate that you don't bother with separate accounts, but rather just let each of your personalities speak from one account. Keep it coming, love your stuff here. :TU:

To your point though, I am not quite seeing it with Thurman. I think he has pop, but it looks like a more flashy kind of power, I don't see a real wrecking ball puncher. Moreover, I thought he got stunned pretty good from a shot by Soto-Karass in the first round of their fight, so I am not completely sold on his beard which has absolutely not been tested. Finally, I am not the least bit impressed with his ledger to date as well; though credit to him for taking on Porter who clearly is a top level fighter.

I think he will find a way to eke out a tight decision against Porter, but the jury is still out there for me on Thurman, and it will be until he is in there with someone who truly has a shot at knocking him out, and while Porter may very well win their fight, he is not that guy either.
