He's had amateur fights, I think he just struggled early on to find them, when he started there was only 2 others he could fight. BUt he had a few, he fought David Price, twice I believe, I think he went to competitions too.

In Sept of 2006, Fury boxed in the Junior World (U-19) championships in Agadir, Morocco. I was a R/J there and got pictures of me with Tyson and his father. Fury was undefeated coming into the tournament with only like 10 fights. He lost in the semi's to Sardor Abdullayev of Uzbekistan 36-31. Mike Hunter of USA lost in the other semi to Cristian Ciocan of Romania. Ciocan beat Abdullayev in the finals. For some reason that I forget right now, Fury tried to make the Irish Olympic team in '08 probably because he couldn't beat Price but they wouldn't let him box because of citizenship or something. His father told me he wanted Tyson to box for GB in the '12 Olympics but obviously they decided to go for the bigger money of the pros and not stick around.

Fury was an ABA senior champ and won bronze at the 2006 world juniors, which as JMac notes were won by Christian Hammer, a guy Fury outclassed and stopped as a pro. I think he may have had fewer bouts than AJ, but he did have an amateur career.
