Mick Roberts jr, what's the point?

Post by mainman1 »

Saw this thread over on another forum and wanted to see what the Scottish lads on here thought it! :TU:

I've watched mick roberts jr box since he was a kid and when he turned professional i was a bit confused because in my eyes he never really had the style for it but after nearly six years as a professional he only did his first 8 rounder on saturday in his 19th yes 19th professional bout

He has boxed 1 guy with a winning record a craig johnson who was 9-4 at the time.

so what is the point really? there are fights for him at scottish area level at both feather and super feather lewis paulin, stephen tiffany are 2 guys who although had less fights would jump at the chance to fight him for the scottish title.

there is also darren traynor from aberdeen, the 2 of them had great bouts as amateurs and would be a great scottish battle that could maybe be done as an eliminator for the british at featherweight.

also there is him vs ronnie clark at super feather, i remember a couple of years ago mick roberts snr saying that ronnie needed to bring something to the table well ronnie is now chasing a british title shot and I'm pretty sure he would love the chance to fight mick roberts jr

i really don't understand why he turned professional to not want to push for titles? or maybe just like in the amateurs his dad is protecting him from the fights everyone wants to see

i'll carry on watching, waiting for him to step up but at 29 years old he really needs a meaningful fight soon or he will be regretting it once his career is over

I remember Michael boxing as an amateur and he is well schooled but doesn't punch very hard, if they are taking their time to ensure he is ready for the step up then I don't see the problem but coming up for nearly 20 fights you would think it was time to take the training wheels off.

I'd like to see him vs Ronnie Clark or Darren Traynor but imo lewis Paulin and Stephen Tiffany would need a few more bouts before taking him on :TU:

His opponent was 10-25 Antonio horvatic according to the results page.

But I have thought this about him for some time. Didn't hearn offer him one of his lads on the matchroom show the other week.

As has been mentioned before it is common knowledge in Scotland that his dad Michael Roberts snr has far too much to do with his son and his career. I remember Ronnie Clark in the past has asked for this bout but his dad wouldn't entertain the idea but with another breath would telling everyone that young Mick would beat him easily :brick: :brick:

Would like to see him in against these guys and i'm sure Michael jr would want these fights too so lets hope he can finally get a shot a at some title soon.

His dad knows exactly what would happen if he fought Ronnie.. He can't make featherweight. He had the chance to fight Charlie Flynn and they turned it down.. There is picking your fights and being scared to fight anyone

This is unfortunately the case with a lot of fighters from Scotland and the blame lies with the small time promoters. If you're a young fighter with any sort of ambition you'd be wise to avoid the promoters up here like the plague.

Can only take daviddee word but if Roberts has been offered the Ronnie fight before how can u blame promoter's.

There obviously has to be a willingness on both sides but promoters up here are awful. Self important twats. The amount of talent that has more than likely slipped the net up here is scary. There are a lot of Scottish boys who fight journeyman after journeyman. What's the point? Tickets!

Scottish Title was offered at the Caird Hall when Ronnie fought Stupart.. Was me who got Tony to make the offer.. Exact response from his manager was that his dad won't let him

that makes no sense whatsoever. I'm sure Clark would have too much for him but Roberts is as good as he's ever going to be at this stage.

Tony was Ronalds manager. We were trying to get an opponent to fight Ronnie for the Scottish Title they all said no. only one to fight was Stupart and the board wouldn't sanction it as a Scottish Title

No disrespect ment to Ronnie but if Roberts team don't feel they cud beat Ronnie where cud his career possibly go. Ronnie is tough game and tested all of his opponents but has fallen short at domestic level at the moment. So if daviddee word is true is roberts happy just fighting journey men and possibly winning a challenge title. Surely he wants to win a Scottish title and British title. A win against Ronnie wud push in right the mix for a shot.

Anything Ronnie does in this game is a positive. He just wants to test himself against the best. I tend to take people in the games word for it. Billy and Ronnie argue but he knows that nobody has seen Ronnies capabilities in fights. Needs to take it into the fights. If he's to be honest he knows who wins that fight. His new manager mark Dunlop signed Ronnie on the back of sparring with James Tennyson and fully believes he will win a British. Ronnie has never had great sparring etc and has always come in to benefit others for example Tom stalker and Derry Mathews replicating styles. And even at that nowhere near the correct amount of sparring or guidance so in truth was taking nothing from it with no trainer with him. Training himself essentially. Always has been like that since he turned over. All his fights are done on heart. He will now be based in Ireland away from everyone with a full time trainer which can only be a good thing. Davie Mcallister is a very good man but he will tell you how many sessions he would do with Ronnie in a full camp ( due to Ronnie being away in camp) and financial reasons. Be lucky if it was 5. These next 3 years put everything in to it and see what happens. Ronnie holds the Scottish so if Roberts wants that then offer it to ronnies management. Simple as that really.

Looking through Boxrec there, the only person with more Wins than Michael Roberts Jnr in Super Featherweight rankings is Stephen Smith, who just recently failed in a world title bid,Lewis Petitt and troy James are also on or just about the same amount of wins as MR JNR,but in fairness have boxed much better opposition,it really is a poor state of affairs no beating about the bush, his father and promoters really need to step up the game, even your 'non boxing men' no what he's really about,in my opinion he'll get beat domestically and that full '0' nonsense will come to a halt, get a grip MGM for the sake of Scottish Boxing!!!the other pretender commenting is obviously Michael or Snr
