June-The Month of the Heavyweight Championship Fights-What happened ?
Remember all those Heavyweight Championship Fights that the use to have back in the month of June
during the early 1930's to about the early 1950's?
Why did they stop ?
Was a tradition for a while.

They used to have big championship fights in the summer because they then could be held outdoors in huge stadiums with much bigger crowds.
Boxing's popularity started to decline in the late 1950s/early 1960s. There weren't as many fights that would draw those kind of crowds anymore.

yes, a world before the "Boob Tube",is difficult to imagine for many.
They did broadcast the fights live on the radio back then,
then about a week later you could see the films of the fights at the cinema.
(that is if you lived in the same state were the fight had taken place I think).

Wasn't the last truly "football dome" USA style fight night held with ODLH in Texas? about a decade ago?
Not sure who his opponent was that night. Seems since then, it's Las Vegas venues and smaller..

I remember back in 1976 Muhammad Ali fought Ken Norton in Yankee Stadium.
Chuck Wepner also "fought" Andre the Giant there around that time.
Thats was back around when New York City was still old school and they had a black-out
(remember the days of the old Times Square ?)

Football Stadium Fights the public demands to see are IMPOSSIBLE to put together anymore... The last one was Froch-Groves II in England.
Froch-Groves II drew 87,000 fans to Wembley Stadium..You couldn't get a ticket to save your life... Others that would work??? Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez... Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury... Kell Brook vs Amir Khan is past it's due date unfortunately. That WAS a huge fight that didn't happen... Luis Ortiz vs Deontay Wilder would be a GREAT fight, but just impossible to make... Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko could work if Wlad could KO Fury in their upcoming fight.. I don't think Wladimir has the "attitude" to take massive risks and win spectacularly... Froch and Groves let it hang out like the brawls of old.
For pure spectacle Terence Crawford vs Manny Pacquiao would have been unbelievable... But you'd never get Manny to do that one for any money.
Depending on how Thurman-Porter goes the rematch might be HUGE!!!! ... Lomachenko vs Walters would be unreal... Gary Russell vs Leo Santa Cruz would be a short (KO by Russell) but very sweet fight... Fury-Klitschko II might potentially be a great fight if Wladimir risks it ALL!!
I'm looking forward to Kovalev-Ward... That will be the biggest fight of that nature in 30 or 40 years... The majority of the above fights will never see the light of day -- but 50 or 80 years ago you could make Froch-Groves II style matchups. The ones everybody wanted to see. Nowadays everyone wants to keep their "O" going and they want that certain victory... Thurman-Porter is pretty unusual and I wasn't sure that could happen.

Hmmm... I don't think the ESPRIT Arena is a Football (Soccer) Stadium... And I don't think it holds 87,000.

Sonny Liston once fought in a bullring in Mexico back in 1968 if I remember correctly.
Muhammad Ali did an exhibition in a bullring at Bogata Colombia
with Bernardo Mercado back around 1977 too.

It is a football stadium you clown.Kalan wrote:Hmmm... I don't think the ESPRIT Arena is a Football (Soccer) Stadium... And I don't think it holds 87,000.
Esprit Arena (stylized as ESPRIT arena), known previously as the "LTU Arena" (until June 2009), and as the "Düsseldorf Arena" (during the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest), is a multi-functional football stadium in Düsseldorf, Germany. The stadium holds 54,600[3] and has a closable roof. Its special heating system allows the stadium to host comfortable events at the height of winter.
Re: June-The Month of the Heavyweight Championship Fights-What happened ?
Like I said you stupid bastard...It doesn't hold 87,000 like a large outdoor Football Stadium would... That's my point... From the outside it has a square building appearance. It doesn't appear to be a football stadium or have the capacity for even 54,600... Thanks for doing the research.

No. You said. " I don't think the ESPRIT Arena is a Football (Soccer) Stadium", which it is. You are wrong.Kalan wrote:Like I said you stupid bastard...It doesn't hold 87,000 like a large outdoor Football Stadium would... That's my point... It doesn't hold 87,000, which was the second part of you statement (hence the 'and') I also know this.
Re: June-The Month of the Heavyweight Championship Fights-What happened ?
I said I didn't think it was a football stadium which is correct... because I didn't think it was... If I didn't think my wife would be home until 7 and she makes it back by 5:30 that doesn't make me wrong either -- simply because I don't know everything and I don't need to know. It would be better to hold Joshua-Klitschko in Wembley Stadium then Espirit Arena.. because it would quickly sell out either venue and Wembley holds a lot more fans.keithmoonhangover wrote:No. You said. It's like thinking an employee will show up for work and he doesn't. It doesn't make you wrong -- you just don't have a crystal ball. I consider a major outdoor Boxing venue, like a ball park, to be one that holds 80,000 fans or more. So for a major summer fight that's what I would secure.

You're like a child. It is a football stadium and if you had half a brain you would know that.Kalan wrote:It's like thinking an employee will show up for work and he doesn't. What else would they use it for? There has never been a Boxing stadium built. LOL
Re: June-The Month of the Heavyweight Championship Fights-What happened ?
I do know it can be used for football.. since you did the research.. but for a massive summer fight you'd want a bigger outdoor stadium... And I have a full brain. You have the brains of a gnat.keithmoonhangover wrote:You're like a child. I think Dublin have a indoor stadium purpose built just for boxing.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:What else would they use it for? There has never been a Boxing stadium built. LOL
