Prime Sugar Ray Robinson VS Prime SR Leonard

Post by aajayunlimited »

Sugar Ray Robinson has a lot of characteristics like Tommy Hearns(very fast power punching from a boxer's stance) who Leonard walked through his punches and beat. SRR's movement was more primitive--good fighters tracked him down by midfight. SRR takes a far better punch than Hearns and occassionally counterpunched with huge punches. Leonard was probably the best speedy combination fighter in history--even better than Ali: 15+ blinding, very good punch combinations. Leonard has those short arms that allow him to go underneath SRR long reach, as a power fighter would! Leonard had better competition than SRR; although, Robinson beat great fighters when he was older(making you revisit the younger Robinson). Who wins?

I'll pick Leonard and Duran over Robinson at welterweight.
Above 147lbs, I'd pick Robinson over the two of them.

It would be an excellent fight, Leonard could match Robinson everywhere but power and he had plenty of pop. I'd take Robinson by tight decision 6 out of 10 times, neither is coming close to being stopped.

A lot of people think Marty Servo did. Too bad we can't ever see it.

I think one has the edge in the Welter division, while the other has the upper hand in a MW bout.

I'll let you sort out which one is which.

Leonard would beat Robinson with ease...

Leonard had a better defense, better speed, better technique, and superior punch resistance to Robinson.. Leonard beat a better Middleweight in Marvin Hagler than Robinson ever fought... When you look at Robinson getting beaten by super hittable guys like Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio, Randy Turpin, and Ralph Jones---and getting floored by Artie Levine.. Jake LaMotta.. Tommy Bell.. and Rocky Graziano.. you know the much more deceptive and sharper punching Sugar Ray Leonard would have ripped Robinson a new one.

Still, Leonard was knocked cold by Hector Camacho & dominated by Terry Norris. Two flawed fighters.

More BS from you... Leonard was badly out-boxed and out-sped by Terry Norris, floored twice, but made it to the final bell...

After a 6-year absence from Boxing Leonard came back at the age of 40 and looked horrible versus Hector Chamacho... surprise... surprise

But SRL was never knocked cold... He was on his feet at the stoppage, perfectly lucid and aware of what was going on.

Tough fight for either man.

I'd go with Robinson on points, but he'd have to work damn hard for the victory.

I agree with that as well. :D
Leonard is the guy who would consistently give Robinson the most trouble. They were the two best welterweights of all time. Leonard was a complete boxer who matches up well. It would have been a great fight; possibly the greatest welterweight fight of all time. Would lean towards Robinson winning a close decision.

What do you mean wrong? Leonard and Duran were extraordinary boxers, just like Robinson. But, above welterweight, Duran and Leonard weren't all that good. Why? Because of the weight. Robinson beats both of them anywhere from 154lbs and above. You gotta watch more fights.

It's right to point out that Robinson's best weight was Welterweight. He only moved up to Middleweight when he cleaned out the welters, there was no-one left for him to fight.

Robinson wins by stoppage. Leonard wouldn't be able to outspeed or outbox Robinson. Leonard had a tendency to fight in sporadic bursts, that wouldn't be enough to keep Robinson off of him.

Relentless pressure, accurate shots, precision timing, immaculate boxing.

Robinson stops him in round 14.

Robinson went to sleep out there half the time --- Lost to Turpin.. Lost to the small, short Basilio.. Lost to wide open Gene Fullmer.. Quit versus Joey Maxim.. Lost to Ralph Jones.. Decked by Artie Levine.. Decked by LaMotta.. Decked by Graziano.. Decked by Tommy Bell.. Robbie would fight furiously but he would start running and flagging as he gassed out and he was easy to hit.. You never saw him in a Chris Eubank vs Nick Blackwell type of fight with murderous, sustained, pinpoint combinations ripping.. You never saw that in your life from Ray Robinson.

I mean Robinson was a great fighter and everything.. He was charismatic as Hell.. But who did SRR ever fight who could box like Ray Leonard??? Certainly none of the above slowpokes who beat SRR or floored him.. Who did SRR ever fight who could beat Marvin Hagler??? ... There's your answer.

You missed the key argument here, which surprises me.

Robinson was a mediocre swimmer and a crappy rebounder, whereas Leonard once got 8 rebounds in a pickup game and used to swim every summer on family holidays to Florida

I think its therefore quite clear that Leonard wins

Robinson by wafer thin decision in an excellent tactical battle. Leonard could possibly win in, I'll got with Robinson.
