It doesn't work for everyone. I get more power (or impact on the bag) when I turn my right hook over so my fist is almost upside down, but my left works better just index finger at the top if that makes sense. The boxer who is the hardest puncher I've personally felt doesn't turn them over, his hook is like a slight uppercut.

Well...It DOESN'T NECESSARILY...

On jabs and straight rights your hand turns over naturally on the fullest extension so it's the most natural motion... If you roll under a left hook and come up with a right hook (or the reverse) you turn it over more the closer you are and/or the taller your opponent is. If you land a 45 or tighter angled hook to the jaw you turn it over. If your opponent is wide open like Amir Khan and you're cutting him down by wading in with great big swings, a la Danny Garcia, you can turn them over. So it's select situations .... But if you have a slightly shorter opponent pinned to the ropes and covering up well, and you're ripping him with hooks behind the elbows.. uppercuts to the abs.. uppercuts to the chin and face.. and hooks to the ears around the guard...you don't turn anything over when you do that. He can't possibly cover everything up at once so you just keep going where the best opening exists and pulverize him with accurate blows -- like Golovkin driving Stevens along the ropes in round 8 when he was punishing him non-stop and finishing him off. When you're smashing a same size or shorter opponent like that through a defensive guard you don't turn the shots over because it's a lot of work and not efficient. This is what makes guys like GGG and Loma seem tireless. They're connecting, being efficient, not wasting energy turning everything over.

You can prove this to yourself by standing about 16" from a heavy bag and make it sing with a hard flurry of 10 or 12 hooks with both hands. Throw them to the front of the bag so you get some follow through.. left, right, left, right.. about shoulder height, 3 or 4 punches per second. You'll find it feels more natural and powerful if you don't turn them over. Then fire a rapid triple hook into the bag with you left hand.. and another with your right hand. You'll find you can fire faster, smoother, harder, and more efficiently if you don't turn them over.

My guess is that the turning of the hands over makes your shoulder follow through so you punch through the target in golf there's lots of tips like these that make you hit the ball longer the basics are the same for hitting a golf ball and throwing a straight right hand

Exactly right. Your hand turns over because you're getting the greatest natural shoulder extension on the straight right.. On the 45 to the jaw you turn it over if it's a single blow - so the shoulder and clavicle can assist in delivering the best leverage, motion, power, and follow through.

Don't think it needs turning over and to be honest I don't think many do, after all its just an uppercut thrown from a different angle and will reach its target quicker by not turning it

If you was to turn it over, it's difficult to do that on a bag, isn't it? Feels unnatural.

Just depends on the person and if you've been boxing for years and turning the hooks over all the time then it will feel more natural. I do it with my right but not left. Defo get a stiffer dig when I turn the right hand over.

it depends on where you're striking, the chin or the ear... It also depends on if you're throwing a long or a short shot.. Long hooks you might not turn over because you want to maintain your balance and form while scoring with jabs and hooks from a distance.. but the hook GGG set up Monroe for in the 2nd round, in the corner where he floored him, he turned it a little because it was a single shot that he worked hard to set up...

When a guy's right in on top of you, like almost butting heads, you'll turn them over for head shots... not for body shots.
