Ruben Olivares vs Chucho Castillo 1+2
Cant find their 3rd fight, shame as the 1st two were good fights, well fought with a lot of good infighting, real gruelling affairs,1st fight was the best i'd say with Olivares winning a deserved UD,rematch was a lot closer with Castillo winning via 14th round TKO due to a cut eye suffered by Ruben,im not sure who was in front by that point it was a real nip and tuck fight and Chucho had more success than he did in the previous fight
Pity about the 3rd fight not being available

I went straight for a bit of 'Ali, boma ye' when he passed away. Even all these years later the Rumble in the Jungle has to rate as one of the most amazing fights of all time.

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Carlos Monzon vs Rodrigo Valdes 1+2
Both good, competitive match ups, highly contested for all 30 rounds, well apart from the 14th of the 1st fight when Monzon put Valdes down and the 2nd round of the rematch when Rodrigo returned the favour, the right hand doing the damage for both men,1st time i'd seen either guy, their 1st fight was a unification if im not mistaken,i'd seen clips of Monzon before and had been reading a bit about him recently, typically crazy South American outside the ring but very methodical and composed inside, almost European in his style, tall with a long left jab which he uses as well any fighter ive seen, great straight too as well as a very effective right uppercut which he frequently uses, very simple style but very effective and played the part of making one of the best, successful and longest serving champions of all time,Valdes was no slouch himself and at times reminded me of a mini-Frazier with his constant bob and weave style bringing up the left hook to the head and also the body
He just struggled to get under they long leavers of Monzon who was so good at doing the basics,Carlos is one of those fighters who if your just starting out boxing,he's one of the 1st guys i'd recommend to watch

Marquez-Vasquez 3. Never. Gets. Old. I must have seen it 12 times.
Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Steve Robinson vs Paul Hodkinson -
Hard fight and brave affort from faded Hodkinson. Robinson with good tight defense and laded too easily throughout
Pat Cowdell vs Salvador Sanchez -
Brave effort again from Pat and ended up doing better than I thought he would. Sanchez not at his best for me though
Johnny Nelson vs Carl Thompson -
Nelson looked classy but took the foot off the gas for no good reason at time, looked a levelk above Thompson
Charlie Magri vs Eleoncio Mercedes -
Probably not a good cuts stoppage. Magri very limited I thought
Barry McGuigan vs Eusebio Pedroza -
Absolutely inspired by McGuigan, fantastic performance against a very good fighter
John Conteh vs Jorge Victor Ahumada -
Conteh a classy and stylish looking boxer. I had this wider than most but perhaps it was a tighter contest than I scored it
Steve Collins vs Reggie Johnson -
Good scrap, I gave it to Reggie by a round, he boxed well but Collins was a warrior. Could have seen it a few rounds either way from my score and wouldn't have complained.

Ignore the pish I waffle in the opening statement
"First thing I noticed about this fight, was how much they look like Balboa and Creed, in looks and posture in particular, but kind of in style at times too
Conteh - Ahumada
10-9 Conteh
10-9 Conteh, couple of uncomfortable moment but still gave him the round
10-9 Conteh
9-10 Ahumada
10-9 Conteh

9-10 Ahumada

9-10 Ahumada
10-9 Conteh

10-9 Conteh
147 - 139 for Conteh
I've got it a good bit wider than anyone else, including the ref and commentator, but I really did just prefer what John had to do.
Great effort from Ahumada but Conteh was good to watch, very tidy and stylish boxer"

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Barney Ross vs Jimmy McLarnin 1+2(highlights)
Was only able to find highlights of the 1st 2 fights between these 2 greats and none of the 3rd fight,Ross won the the 1st fight to take the title then McLarnin regained the title in the rematch, both close decisions, shame there's no footage of the full fights as they looked decent and not as messy as some of the older fights ive seen, both very closely contested too
Funnily enough the 1st fight has John Rawling doing commentary,as you sometimes see with these old fights but he was commentating saying it was the 3rd fight even though it was their 1st encounter
Ross won the rubber match
