Welterweight contest

Post by davie »

The top 4 welterweights of all time, according to Boxrec rankings are Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao, Emile Griffith & Jose Napoles.
(for now we will conveniently ignore the fact they have SRL & Henry Armstrong at no 9 & 10 respctively and SRR as a middleweight.)

Of the above 4 fighters, we know the outcome of 2 of those potential matchups, so lets assess the other 4. How would you score the following bouts:

Floyd Mayweather vs Jose Napoles
Emile Griffith vs Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao vs Jose Napoles
Emile Griffith vs Floyd Mayweather

- TUE 49-0 wins the most non compelling, useless decisions over all with the help of his Vegas mob and USADA sycophants.

Take him out of Vegas and he gets exposed as the all time fraud that he has proven to be. Naples a good fighter but not in Griffith's class, so in any kind of fairly officiated tourney, it boils down to Griffith and Manny.

I give Manny the edge because of his unorthodox southpaw style and power. In Griffith's 6oz horsehair gloves, he'd be even more deadly, but maybe in a 3 fight series that each enjoyed testing themselves, Griffith could win the rematch with Manny prevailing again for the rubber.

Manny Pacquiao, as great as he was, was not in the great Emile Griffith's class. Emile would have sent him back to the flyweights.

Griffith vs Pacquiao would have been the one I'd have liked to have seen.
I wonder how Griffith would have dealt with the speed and movement of Pacquiao
