Billy Joe Saunders

Post by Taansend »

What's going on with him?

Says he has a fight around September 24th against ??? But other British fighters are getting lucrative cracks at the Big Guns of the division while he's kicking his heels & lining up fights with 4th rate opposition.

I'm a fan and don't think we've seen the best of BJS but am starting to fear we may never will.

That's right,Eubank has fought 5 times i think since they met and BJS has fought twice, the last being 7 months ago,he's in his prime and appears to be wasting his time,he should have taken the GGG fight, imagine his face if Brook wins.

Not that arsed about Saunders really. I quite liked him when he turned over but I have to say, in both his big fights against Eubank and Lee, I rooted against him and will probably want him to lose his next fight too. He shamelessly ducked his biggest payday in GGG and then signed to fight Max Ballsack, or whatever his name was, in a fight that was destined to die on it's arse and shift zero tickets. The round with the knockdowns aside, the Lee fight was one of the most boring world title fights I have ever seen, almost up there with Haye-Valuev. Complete shite. He's always looked too small for MW to me as well but lacks the discipline to lose the weight, kinda like Frankie Gavin (but obviously much more talented.) I think he's a good boxer but I don't find him particularly likeable, he doesn't seem to want to challenge himself and he can't shift tickets: look at how his fight with Lee tanked and had to be rescheduled due to 'injury', just like the Bursak fight. I bet Fwank's fed up with him too, to be honest.

Let's be realistic Jack, the bout against Bloyer wasn't a fight. The bloke had been kayoed about a dozen times.

Really he's fought once in 20 months.

He's 27 soon & really needs to crack on in 2017. Still plenty of time for the lad.

Didnt he get some serious 'step-aside' money for letting Andy Lee fight Quillin ? Probably doesnt feel the need to fight.

Yeah didn't he get 300k? I would have not fought someone for 10% of that! :OhYes:

I dunno if Saunders is that much more talented than Gavin to be honest. Gavin is completely feather fisted though.

Look at the opposition he fought before winning the world title, hardly the run of a man unwilling to test himself. Can't think of a British fighter in recent years that had a better record heading into their first world title fight or that cleaned out the division domestically in the way he did. Just because he wouldn't take short money for Golovkin doesn't mean that he's scared of anyone, Golovkin's team spin as much shite as anyone else but for some reason they get away with it.

I used to be a big BJS fan but he's started to annoy me in recent years. Its mainly down to his constant blabbering about Eubank Jr, he acts like he took him to school; he didn't, he keeps contradicting himself over and again - "if Eubank could beat up spike then I'll hold my hand up and say he's a good fighter", Eubank wins he says so what he beat spike. He says he would never fight GGG, then says he wants to fight him, then shock horror goes running but then claims Eubank Jr is a coward for ducking GGG.

If you don't want to fight GGG you may as well hang up your gloves, that's surely the golden goose you chase as a pro. Anything he does now is pointless, he won't fight the best and doesn't believe he is the best, and isn't aiming to be the best so what's the point in him?

He's fought very good opposition for the levels he has been fighting at but he doesn't sell tickets. I think he's realise that without a big money fight with Eubank Jr he has found his level and can't really progress any further, other than facing GGG which he will only do when he wants to cash out.

Don't be ridiculous, the best by far was Eubank jr, who was inexperienced at the time and should have beat Saunders, who was lucky to scrape home, he just held on against Blackwell after fading badly and many thought he lost to Rider, lucky to be on Warren shows, where are the world level fighters, that you have to get through to get a world title shot ? Compare Hatton's fights before he fought for the title. Beating domestic fighters should not get you a world title shot ? You must be seeing something, most are not.

Saunders fight with Andy Lee was among the most boring in history. I'd only be willing to watch him vs GGG.

You think? Saunders has at least won a belt, is undefeated and has some decent names on his resume, and while he isn't the most exciting I haven't seen him look awful. You can argue that WW is a by far the more talented and deep division and Gavin was always up against it but the lad struggled against a faded Young Mutley. Brook absolutely annihilated poor Gavin who was completely out of his depth. Despite his small size I'd give BJS a good chance against any of the MW top ten, bar GGG, which is maybe more of an indication of just how shite I think MW is, really.

For me I think it's a combination of Gavin having very little power and secondly I don't think he has a great deal of mental strength. He doesn't seem to have a great amount of belief in his own ability.

Don't get me wrong Saunders is talented but I think he has all the other attributes needed to be a world level fighter that Gavin lacks.

If he dropped down he would find Demetrius Andrade waiting for him. He might find him stepping up soon if he doesn't anyway.

I seem to recall that at one point Saunders and Warren were talking about Billy Joe moving up, not down, as mad as that seems. I can certainly see it happening if a challenging fight is forced on him. BJ Saunders vs Martin Murray anyone?

I dunno, if we look at his record objectively - he has won a world title, and beaten Chris Eubank Jr and Andy Lee in the last 18 months - and still remains unbeaten.

It's not that bad is it ?

I remember allegedly admitting BJS that he wants to wait for the right time to fight GGG in a few years :witzend:

So they're basically saying to wanting the fight, when Golovkin's old. Why would BJS not want to fight a prime GGG. Just shows that he doesn't have the bottle IMO. Always grates me when a boxer says things like "I'm not ready" - Mike Tyson was heavy weight champion of the world at 20.

And Tyson wasn't emotionally ready for that, not that he ever would have been.

Southern area, British, commonwealth, european, WBO international, WBO world. 5 undefeated opponents on his resume prior to being world champion, add to that Andy lee and nick Blackwell. On paper I think bjs is on our more reputable world champs

I used to really like him but turning down a career best purse for the GGG fight has put me off. Looking back I wish Andy Lee would have won as he would have fought GGG by now.
