Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
He's older than Mike Tyson & they sparred as teenagers so why did he turn pro late? Tyson turned pro in 85' so Lewis turning pro 89' would have
meant any chance of a Tyson fight would've happened in 92-93 had Tyson not gone to prison. I know it seems like I'm trolling but this is a serious
issue I have why would he wait 7-8yrs after Mike turned pro to issue a challenge? I really do believe Lewis and his team were like "Hey Lennox,
You Have Great Potential But This Tyson Kid Is a Complete Animal. It's Really Not a Great Idea To Turn Pro Anytime Soon Let Mike Lose Some
Steam. Besides You'll Get a Crack At Winning Gold In Seoul. Relax For Right Now."

Re: Lennox Lewis's Entire Career Questionable
That was a sneaky way to avoid Prime Tyson but of course Lennox will never admit it. Why make yourself available 7-8yrs after a sparring session
that really didn't go your way? That's because he wanted no part of Tyson...the PRIME Tyson.

Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
He wanted to be Olympic Gold.
Later on, it was Tyson the one who avoided Lennox.
Whats the big controversy here? Trying to defend the most overrated fighter of the 90s (Besides De la Hoya) ?
I have Lewis as a top 10 heavyweight, and i believe that Tyson is lucky to be at the top 10, seriously.

Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
To be fare Tyson was way way past his Best when Team Lewis decided to cash in and what really pissed me off watching that fight was like he almost always did Lennox took the easier rout to victory when he probably could have won in spectacular fashion but in the back of his mind knew what could happen if he engaged earlier in the fight with Tyson that he would be reliving the Mc Call/Rahman experiance's.
Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
Tyson was a FLAT OUT DUCKER and CHERRY PICKER!!!! ... He not only avoided Lewis for as long as he possibly could, he also avoided Evander Holyfield... Tyson was scheduled to fight Holyfield when he was 23 and Holyfield attended the Tyson-Douglas fight because he got the winner... Unfortunately for Holyfield Buster Douglas boxed Mike Tyson's ears off ... and KTFO out of the youngster...
That result was OK with Holyfield, AKA Evan Fields on occasion... He merely brutalized Buster with a swift right hand and took over the title promptly... Holyfield still wanted to fry Mike's ass and said "Tyson is next -- if he wants some." ... Tyson didn't want any... Mike pulled of the Holyfield fight claiming an injured rib -- but we all know Mike really was avoiding a class A beating form Evander.
After Mike recovered from his "injured rib" he had another fight scheduled. This one in court with Desiree Washington... She gave Mike a good beating -- it was 4 years before Tyson could fight again after she got done trimming his pecker... but Mike didn't schedule a fight with Holyfield or Lewis upon his release from prison -- he took on the lowly Peter McNeeley.. After another couple years of soft touches [Holyfield had also managed to avoid Lewis all these years] Tyson couldn't avoid Holyfield any longer.. Evander had already lost twice to Riddick Bowe and once to Michael Moorer---guys who Tyson never fought---and Mike figured Holyfield was on the down slide anyway... The odds makers agreed... They made Tyson a 23/1 favorite... Astute big money bettors LTAO!!! They backed up the truck and got some unbelievable terms on what appeared to be ridiculously misconstrued wagering odds -- and their bets converted as Evander beat the living stuffings out of Tyson like he owned him... The odds were closer on the rematch but the smart money was still on Evander.
So all this time both Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson cleverly avoided a frustrated Lewis... This is just the way the Boxing Business is... If somebody is going to kick your ass and knock you out -- you DUCK him for as many years as you're allowed to... Did Ali choose to fight Larry Holmes or did he fight Leon Spinks instead??? ... So anyway, Lewis said, "I may never get to fight Tyson and Holyfield and I can't worry too much about it -- because you can't make a horse drink. But if they ever want to fight I'm here... And I'm going to beat the living crap out of them... I just want them to know that."

Mike Tyson at 20 years wouldve knocked out Lewis and Holyfield at whatever age those 2 would be at that time.
Lewis and Holyfields boxing was still developing while Tyson obviously leapfroged the both of them.
I dont think Lewis was avoiding Tyson although you might have a point and if thats the case then its very smart from Lewis.

Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
Lewis dragged out his amateur career as long as possible. Rather than turn pro in 85 he stuck around and wound up being a 23 year old man - the age a lot of pros are fighting for world titles - boxing a teenage Bowe in the 88 final. A win his context-averse acolytes to this day apply serious meaning to.
Turning pro as late as 89, in the UK, with a bad manager and a bad team ensured slow progress and meant that Lewis missed out on a Tyson fight. I hardly think it was part of some grand plan to avoid anyone. Lewis seemed keen on boxing him in 91 but Tyson had mega bucks opponents in Ruddock, Holyfield and Foreman to consider - Lewis had only so far beaten Gary Mason. It just wasn't a realistic fight. Lewis didn't emerge on world stage until he bombed Ruddock.
All worked out perfectly for LL in the end. He beat a boy Bowe and the mortal remains of Holyfield and Tyson. For a man who got 1-punch KOd by McCall and Rahman - the former removing him from a big pro fight vs a matured, serious, scary Bowe - his reputation glimmers in a way that is quite remarkable.

Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
Lewis was 3-0 against Tyson and Holyfield... Bowe FO’d... LL wasn’t the ducker. Those 3 were... In FACT, anytime it came to Lewis fighting Bowe, Evander, or Mike, they always tried to find a way out of the fight... Lewis finally cornered them when they had no place to hide... They were the earlier versions of Canyello.
Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
Young Iron Mike couldn't put a dent in Razor Ruddock... Lewis smashed that punk out quickly.

I agree on much of this....and then you started babbling about Evander ducking Lewis......and then Evander somehow managed to lose to Lewis in "draw" and then come back and beat him in a "loss".
So I can't quite make out any sort of ducking on that level.

Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
You have to get your brain in gear and ditch the meds BussBox... Lift the fog boy... Holyfield and Lewis were both fighting professionally for MANY YEARS BEFORE Holyfield was finally cornered and had no reasonable way out of fighting Lewis---if he didn't want to look like a coward---and if he pulled a Riddick Bowe he would be a coward, so he fought him... Their 1st fight was Highway Robbery... Their 2nd fight was clearly won by Lewis.BoxBuzz wrote:Kalan wrote:Tyson was a FLAT OUT DUCKER and CHERRY PICKER!!!! ... Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
Does anyone remember June 1994 when Riddick Bowe signed to fight Lennox Lewis in a 1995 mega fight on TVKO? Sadly Lewis got himself splattered by Oliver McCall and blew the fight.
Does anyone remember 1996 when Riddick Bowe and HBO offered Lewis a hugely lucrative fight to close the Bowe/Holyfield III & Lewis/Morrison mini tourney - and Lewis declined the fight and instead took on Ray Mercer for chump change? Mysterious man, Lennox Lewis.
I remember Holyfield was happy to unify with Lewis in 1994 - but was obliged to defend against Moorer first, who had been delayed for years, and lost. In 1993 Moorer had been happy to take step aside money rather than a shot at Bowe. Very similar to how Lewis in 1996 had been happy to take step aside money rather than a shot at Tyson after his Mercer horror.
