Joe Frazier vs Jerry Quarry, 1969

As I didn't see that fight, what are your thoughts on this one???

I think it was named fight of the year, and that the fight was stopped on cuts..

Was the fight competitive? (obviously I think it was, as it's a fight of the year)

Did the cut changed the outcome??? ( I read that Joe would have won anyway)

could we consider this as one of Joe's best performances?

What I remember most about that fight was the shot Quarry hit Frazier with in like the first minute of the first round. Frazier was headed for a sure knockdown when he bounced back up off the rope.

Frazier looked real good, Quarry hung real tough with him early but he was starting to slow down at the time of the stoppage. Jerry was showin some signs of wear and tear and Frazier looked like he was gettin into a groove.

I think Expug really sums it up. Both Jerry and Joe gave outstanding performances. Would Joe have won anyway? Yes for the same reason Muhammad Ali would have beaten Jerry in their first fight cut or no cut. Joe and Muhammad were simply better than Jerry, God rest his soul.
PS If there is any doubt how the Frazier/Quarry I would have gone with the cut just look at how Frazier/Quarry II went without a cut.

Quarry was cut bad in the second fight also. It was stopped when he quit. He turned and waved his glove at Joe to signal he was quitting the bout if I remember correctly. Very unlike his other stoppage losses where he hung tough until the end.

Quarry went in there and looked as fast and ferocious as he ever was. Stupid gameplan-trying to slug it out with a prime Frazier toe to toe-but it made for an entertaining bout.

Now I heard the two used to spar with eachother when they were young prospects and Quarry always came out to be the better man in the early spar sessions. That caused Quarry's manager to be chomping at the bit for a fight to have the world see a young Quarry defeat a young recent olympic gold medalist in Frazier, but Frazier's trainer didn't allow it. He knew Frazier was too green to send out there, but still wanted the two to fight down the road. Hence the fight happening in 1969. You'd have to imagine though if that fight woulda happened at Quarry's convenience in the earlier years would he have won the fight?

It was a good fight. Get it if you can. The first two rounds were even give and take exchanges. Frazier started to take over around round three. Quarry was later on cut, but it was not a horrible cut. I thought the stoppage was a bit premature. Quarry could have fought more rounds. Frazier was something in his prime. His rentless attack and superior firepower too away from Quarry's counter punching.

The best way to beat Frazier of course was to jab him from the outside, or catch him coming in. When Frazier is ‘smoking up close the uppercut is needed. Quarry didn't have a long jab, a big right or an uppercut. He had to fight Frazier on his terms!

I saw Frazier/Quarry II and Jerry definitely didn't quit. Actually it was Frazier who waved ref Joe Louis in when it was obvious Jerry couldn't continue. Joe Louis waved the fight to continue but Joe Frazier refused and pointed out the VERY OBVIOUS fact Jerry was standing there with his hands down unable to see either one of them. Joe Louis then stopped the fight. PS Quarry seemed to be badly swollen around the eyes along with (for him) a minor cut.
