Canelo Smith - Will Weight Be an Issue?

Post by Taansend »

After Roy Jones moved up to beat John Ruiz for the Heavyweight title he was never the same again (when moving back down to Light Heavy).

Do you think that Canelo Alvarez will have the same trouble getting down to 154 after weighing 155 for the last five fights :maybe:

On this basis alone I am betting everything I have on Beefy in September.

And I'm still hoping to go to the fight. I have five mates coming over in September for ten days. They want to do a road trip to the Keys but if there's a decent hurricane that week I can convince them to go to Dallas instead

Smith is taking liberties here, dragging Canelo down to 154 where he will clearly be drained. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Canelo enters the ring as a shadow of his former self, so am also betting everything I have on a Smith win.

Alvarez clearly is not as good when he goes all the way down to 154.

Work rate can be an issue with him as was the case in his big unification a few years ago in which he'd throw flashy punches the first 45 seconds of a round before running and defending himself until the bell went.

There must have been a reason for getting Lara above 154 making it a non title fight.

Going a bit under 154, he had bugger all against Mayweather, a fight he was already in over his head for.

I would not be surprised if Alvarez failed to make the contracted 154 against Smith. If he does make the weight, I hope Smith out works him, gets off first, tries to back him up, without admiring his work. Because if you stay in front of Alvarez, as Kirkland did, he throws vicious punches and will blast you out. Work rate is the key, because Alvarez's is so poor - as a genuine light middle - so the key is dictating the pace, applying pressure, without being straight in front of him when he replies - a tricky balancing act to pull off, admittedly.

That should be a genuine concern for Smith.

Canelo will make whatever weight he wants. I can see him coming in a pound or two over.

Smith fights one way and looks outgunned power and strengthwise here. He's way too basic and static. I don't see him making much of a dent in Alvarez and good luck to him when Alvarez starts letting the big hooks go.

I know this is a comedy thread...

.. but maybe he genuinely can't hit 154 and sustain it, sometimes that last pound will not budge whatsoever.

Serious threads often descend into comedy so why not the other way around...

Surely that renowned king of weight-making Paul Smith can give him some great tips based on his experience with Andre Ward :TU:
