Mundine & Green meet at Sydney airport to close the deal

Post by Like a Boss »

Boxers Anthony Mundine and Danny Green have reportedly struck a deal to fight again, 10 years after their memorable clash in Sydney 10 years ago.

The Sunday Telegraph today published a photo of the two fighters meeting at Sydney airport to close the deal, and quotes both fighters, whose mutual animosity is well-known, as saying they are ready for the re-match of the 2006 fight which Mundine won by a unanimous points decision.

The fight was also flagged yesterday by sports columnist Danny Weidler in Fairfax newspapers.

Each fighter will reportedly get a purse of up to $10 million. They’ll fight at 83kg, meaning Mundine will have to move up several weight divisions. His last fight was at 69kg.

With broadcast rights the promoters are talking about it being a $30 million event.

“This is my last fight,” Mundine told the Telegraph. “I know I’m against the odds but I’ve gotta win at all costs and I will. This will be a historic moment in Australian boxing.”

There has been talk of a rematch for some time and Mundine said earlier this year he would like it to be fought at Uluru.

There’s more at the Telegraph and at Fairfax.

83kg? That would be close to Choc's weight when he was playing football.

This is what Weidler had to say :

Mundine and Green met face-to-face at Sydney Airport on Friday. To the best of my knowledge, it's the only time they have come together since their famous fight in 2006. The meeting was set up by Mundine's manager, Khoder Nasser. He wanted Green to hear from Mundine's mouth that he wanted to have the fight.

Nasser organised for the pair to meet. Mundine turned up with his father, Tony. Green was there with his agent, Justin Manlokis. The table they had could fit only four people, so Nasser had to stand up. There was no polite chit-chat; it was all business and it was edgy.

Mundine and Green were sizing up each other. Mundine looked Green in the eye and said he wanted the fight to happen. That had to happen from Green's point of view. He didn't want an assurance from anyone in Mundine's camp. He had to hear it from Mundine.

After Mundine left the meeting, Nasser hung around with Green and his agent. They talked logistics and agreed the fight will happen, barring major injury to either boxer. The fight is likely to take place in late November or early December.

Definite advantage. Green could weigh-in at 90kgs & Mundine 70

That was a long time ago though his body has changed with him dropping weight divisions. I can only see this as a Green stoppage or Green wide UD with Mundine on his bike for 12 boring rounds.

Let me get this straight now. Anthony Mundine and Danny Green are going to have a rematch that will make them millions of dollars? Well knock me over with a flaming feather. Who would have thought?

Choc is fairly tall. He must be training hard to get down to 70kg. Men tend to get heavier as they get older, not lighter.

That means Green has to weigh-in at no more than 83. If the fight did take place in NT, where there no commission, Choc can weigh anything.

Mundine is 5ft 11 and it darn near killed him when he first attempted to get down to 154. It was for the Rob Medley fight and he found he just couldn't force himself down that low and ended up coming in at 159. At 40 he will have no problem putting the weight back on. First step is to stop starving himself.

Anthony Mundine and Danny Green have finally agreed to a rematch.

The deal was being done over coffee at a secret meeting in a cafe at Sydney airport on Friday morning.

The pair agreed to a 50/50 pay split, ending years of speculation of a rematch.

Mundine’s manager Khoder Nasser and Green’s agent Justin Manolikos, who were at the meeting, are to finalise a date and venue for later this year or on Australia Day next year.

“The weight doesn’t worry me,” Mundine said.

“This is my last fight. I know I’m against the odds but I’ve gotta win at all costs and I will. This will be a historic moment in Australian boxing.”

Such is his desperation to win, Mundine had hip surgery in England three months ago to ensure he has full mobility and movement for the fight.

Green and Khoder Nasser were probably thinking the same thing until they all met up at the airport cafe on Friday.

According to Weidler's article it was the first time Mundine and Green had met face-to-face since 2006. That should be indication enough that they are not playing around here.

Anthony & Tony Mundine's comments afterward are a further indication that this was business. The business of agreeing to a rematch, and by all subsequent reports the deal is done.

I just dont get it.

I don't know how the media works. I don't if the general public really does lap this stuff up.

Don't get me wrong, i know both in their own way have contributed to Australian boxing. But both have also left a sizable stain on it too.

Both have been known to try and pass off mismatches as world class. Both have lost to a 'name' fighter that was cherry picked due to losses and inactivity. Both have had their reputation tarnished time and again.

This is all common knowledge, even to the general public. Yet they still sell.

They will be laughing all the way to the bank with this sham of a bout.

Keep an ear out for Mundine dubbing it the fight of the century

Yeah it's a Superfight in Australia I guess, it'll barely even get any attention from the rest of the world.

True boxing fans are trashing this fight(you should see the comments at Aus boxing central) but that's not the market this rematch will capture. It's the much larger casual market with media saturation.

The media is a strange beast, almost always with a vested interest in what goes on. That's why they have tried for years to get this rematch to happen. Why? Because it will help sell newspapers and increase TV ratings. Whether we like it or not, Mundine and Green are still news.

Regardless of the advanced age of these two and where their careers are at, it is a classic good guy vs bad guy sell for the media.

Anthony Mundine is one of the least popular sportspeople in Australia. Media have run polls on it and he regularly heads the unpopular vote.

The general public, and keep in mind that's where the vast majority of the money for ALL big fights comes from, bye and large hate Mundine. They know him as an arrogant, big mouth, and it's no accident. Because he has intentionally cast himself as that character and after he got sick of it never managed to change that perception.

Danny Green on the other hand, is best known to the general public as the face behind the campaign against people getting king hit.

So good guy vs bad guy it will be. Get used to it, because the media will run with it in their quest for ratings, and the general public will lap it up and when the time comes, buy it as well.

In discussion with Matty Johns on MMM, Anthony Mundine has confirmed a fight with Danny Green is being organised.

Mundine admitted the two met recently but that it was a little anxious.

"I’m looking forward to butchering Green’s face and putting this to bed," said Mundine.

Mundine, who is Aboriginal, said he would like the fight to be on Australia Day, 2017.

“That day represents murder, genocide, pillaging… And that’s what I want to do to that man,” he said.

The way these two ancient denizens of the ring are going to act and ham up flogging their fight to the public in the upcoming months, it would be best to transfer this thread into the top one: "Oz boxers of the past..."
