Midlands Area Small Hall Scene Thread

Does anyone know how Darren McDermott is getting on and what hes doing with himself? I saw something on facebook about a brewery doing a pint named bodysnatcher seemingly in his honour. And saw some kind of comments about work he does in the community but just hints not specifics.

Anyone hear anything?

Yes mate, he is a personal trainer and kick boxing trainer at eclipse gym in Wolverhampton.

Sound, get him to wear gold and black shorts and come out to the liquidator....even if he doesn't like football it'll help shift tickets.

yes good idea, I have already got him an interview on the pitch at the Wolves game, he is a big Wolves fan, his Dad used to work at the ground, Kyle has been going there since he was a toddler.

Just noticed he's due to fight on the Bescot bill 2nd September, might be going to that so will keep an eye out. I'll also let few of my Wolves supporting/boxing fan mates know too. Personally I'm not fussed I'll support most local lads whoever they support/or don't like football but some lads like that kind of thing you know the 'one of our own' type stuff.

I've seen him at a couple of pro shows and spoke to him. Hes still got the gym at the bottom of the garden and is still training the Ams. Ironically the shows I've seen him at are the only ones he's been too since his retirement. He seems in good spirits but I get the feeling he's lost the love for the pro game.

thats true, the last time I seen him was at an amateur show, with the kids he trains, I asked him about the Pros, got the impression that he was not interested in the pro game at all.

Thanks to you too Insider, I feel a particular interest in him as he was the first boxer I really 'followed' from early in his career, and his headbutt-cut against Elcock was my worst disappointment in boxing as I am 100% sure he would have won the British title that night, which makes his subsequent health problems all the more tragic. Still its good hes got his health and is still involved, anzi I am sure you can empathise with his disaffection for the corruption and bull**** of the pro game.

I always think its a shame the rematch never happened. Due to the early stoppage it did mean my pal who was on the undercard got on the telly though.

Dunno way I remember it fair few things thrown from balcony (only like programmes etc) and few people pretending they were trying to break the barriers down to ge tin the ring etc. you know the type! Do remember there being loads of police outside after, mind you there always tends to be at the Civic (think maybe after the trouble outside the night of the Mutley/Lines fight and trouble at a mid week bill around the same time.

Nah that's true didn't kick off think it seemed to help that fans of each tended to be all mixed in amongst each other rather than in two obvious areas.

Saw that quite fancy the Town Hall one only problem is its same day as Crolla/Linares and Mckenzie/Huck was looking forward to a night in front of the telly for those. Often wonder why small hall shows don't try to stick to Fridays as to not clash with big shows on tv.

Hoping Clarke gets some sort of step up at least for the 2nd September one I'll probably go if so.

I didn't know mate don't really follow the white collar scene even locally (in fact I had to google who Zak the ripper was). I went to one over Oldbury not long ago but was only cuz a mate fought on it didn't really pay much attention to the other fights. Won't that upset the board?

I didn't know mate don't really follow the white collar scene even locally (in fact I had to google who Zak the ripper was). I went to one over Oldbury not long ago but was only cuz a mate fought on it didn't really pay much attention to the other fights. Won't that upset the board?

I cudnt think of his surname lol. He use to b in our kids gym had 3 or 4 pro fights and went back to white collar. Not a fan myself of it. Re glover I don't think it wud go down well at all. Tho he may jacked in the pro's. Haven't heard for sure if he has or not.

Bit of a debate on twitter going on at the moment with Eddie Hearn saying that Birmingham is probably the worst city for ticket sales via the box office (did say that is one of the best for sales through fighters). He said he thought of bringing Quigg/Frampton to Brum at one point but didn't feel it (shame would have saved me on hotel etc).

I'd argue Hearn/Matchroom didn't exactly help themselves the first show here was one of the worst I've ever been too (and that includes 3 fight dinner cards) the other 2 were decent (but nothing special, Gavin pulling out of the Eggington fight didn't help).

Seems to suggest there are still a decent amount of people in and around the Midlands happy to follow their mates/specific fighters but not so many general boxing fans. I'd tend to agree with that the feel I get from shows both small hall and bigger are that most people are their to watch one specific fighter rather than being boxing fans in general.

Whats everyone's thoughts? Is there the demand for big arena shows in the Midlands? Frank puts on shows in and around the area but tends to stick to small scale shows at places like the Civic. Eddie has put a 3 arena shows on now (4th due in October) but all 3 have had reduced capacity's (half hall upper tiers curtained off etc).
