Canelo Alvarez VS Liam Smith - Overlooked fight

Can't see Smith winning but we'll probably learn more about him in this fight than all of his previous fights. His standard of opponent has been dreadful but I'm hoping he can rise to the occasion and find another level. Even if he loses a good performance will see his stock rise ten fold.

Smith won the vacant title and defended it twice with guys I have never heard of. He is unbeaten, but not going to beat Canelo. He wouldn't even be champ if they wouldn't have stripped Andrade. I would much rather see Canelo fight one of the Charlo brothers or Andrade. Anyway, this is an in house fight for a belt, and Canelo will be a huge favorite, -800? Smith will be tougher than Khan though, lol. Speaking of Khan.....Canelo must have damaged Khan's brain some more. Khan said he was open to fighting Conor McGregor under MMA rules! What a doofus.

Got 3 brothers who all fight pro, 2 have fought for world titles already Paul and Steven and the other Callum is expected to go all the way to the top

I think it will be a tougher fight for Canelo than people expect.

Liam Smith is underrated and on paper, looks like he doesn't pack much power with only a 54% KO record but he's developed some decent pop in recent years. His last 8 fights have ended by KO so his KO record is deceiving since he can definitely bang.

I still think Canelo will win but Smith will give him a good fight.

Smith looks like a solid but fairly basic stalker to me, and I'm still not sure if he's any better than EBU level. Before facing Thompson there was talk about him boxing Michel Soro, and I saw and still see that as a 50/50 fight.

Canelo is huge for the weight and takes a good shot, and considering that Smith isn't a big puncher I don't think a stoppage is likely. Smith also isn't particularly skilled, and even if he someone manages to clearly outbox Canelo or get the better of him with a superior workrate, both of which I see as quite unlikely, can you really see him dominating to an extent where he gets a decision against a much bigger draw who has repeatedly benefited from generous scoring?

This is a very safe fight for Canelo in my opinion. I noticed that the OP upbraided Joseph Parker on another thread, but I'd give him a better chance of beating anyone than I'd give Smith here.

I personally think that this is a really really good fight.

On one side we have Saul Alvarez who fought to a draw against Jorge Juarez, was humiliated by Floyd Mayweather and then rebounded by defeating mr Waste of space Amir Khan and former junior welterweight champion Miguel Cotto.

On the other side we have Liam Smith who's resume is far less impressive but the boy looks good, he's not the next Roy Jones Jr or anything of the sort but we are talking about a solid fighter with solid skills and someone who started his career at junior middleweight at the age of 20 so Saul isn't going to be enjoying any size advantage for this one. Liam kinda reminds me of Lennox Lewis, it's not the dreadlocks, it's this veteran pro figther ring presence, Liam just like Lennox and Canelo for that matter doesn't do everything 100% inside the ring but he knows how to use what he has and he has alot of confidence, also the fellow isn't a one trick wonder, he doesn't attack every opponent the same way.

Considering how vastly overrated Saul Alvarez is and how good Liam is I really do not understand why Golden Boy promotions decided to make this fight, Saul has everything to lose and very little to gain and even though Saul is obviously the favourite any money bet on a win for him is a very risky bet.

This is another ridiculous cherry pick... Amir Khan was massively overmatched and so is Liam Smith... This is just another way for CanYellow to avoid Golovkin, Charlo, Andrade, Brook, Spence, or any other tough opponent.

Smith's best opponent is arguably John Thompson, so I wouldn't say that he he loads of experience, at least when it comes to facing good opponents.

It's odd how you are posting this stuff about Smith, yet talking down Parker and Carlos Takam in another thread. Parker is only 24 but already possesses a win that is far better than any of Smith's, while Takam is a legit top 10 fighter who actually has a solid amount of high-level experience, having been in the ring with Parker, Povetkin, Thompson, and Perez. That group is far superior to the likes of John Thompson, Jimmy Kelly, Erick Ochieng, and Pedrag Radosevic.

Your UK fighters of the past were simply not top notch. FACT.

I let that FACT linger in my mind too long until James Degeale shut me up.
Since then, I've been quietly analyzing the new UK fighters.
Fury sucks. But the rest of the UK champions can compete with any fighters in the world.
Many of them are right at the top of their division.

I will take Liam Smith seriously and consider this to be a solid fight.
Not one of the 10 best available fight for Canelo,
but a tough opponent because UK fighters have PROVEN to be world class.

i see it like that too and i actually find
it weird of canelo to make a fight with
such bad risk|reward ratio. he is right
now the no1 p4p, refuses not only to
fight the one man everyone else wants
him to face, but refuses to fight anyone
with a name and instead takes on some
dangerous contender that hardly anyone
outside the UK has ever heard of.
