GGG v Benn (prime)
Re: GGG v Benn (prime)
Golovkin mid rounds KO. Benn is too wild, too open and off balance.

Re: GGG v Benn (prime)
I watched Benn v Barkley again last night as a consequence of this thread. What a tear up that was. Benn was lucky not to get disqualified. He clearly hits Barkley when he`s down (not a massive shot, but enough on it) for the second knockdown.
Just a 3 minute war. The 3 knockdown rule ruined what could have been an ever better fight. Barkley was fully capable of continuing as the last knockdown was not a massive one. It was also right at the end of the round.
The WBO`s 3 knockdown rule robbed us of an better fight. Either way, what a shootout. Benn had some power on him.

Boring jabfest. Like watching a Johnny Nelson sparring session.

You have put things into context; if McClellan hadn't been on the verge of having a stroke, he'd have likely beaten Benn, but we will never truly know, so that should not be used a gauge as to how Benn would fare against Golovkin with no issues to report.
I love Nigel Benn, but Golovkin would probably have been a nightmare for him.
A technically sound guy with power to burn & few if any weaknesses.
Golovkin hasn't had a defining fight nor a decent nemesis to speak of, whereas as Benn had a few, but that is not his fault: he has cleared out his opposition whilst barely breaking sweat & he looks like a guy who could handle a crisis.
Benn would be by far his best opponent, but I can't see Benn taking too many power shots off Golovkin.
GGG would know he's been in a fight, but I think his superior technical ability would seal a late TKO win.

I understand what you mean but this may be a case of opponents flattering him. When Wladimir was able to spend years fencing and holding ineptitudes he was a glorious reinvention who could not be defeated. When Tyson Fury showed him some nous his whole game collapsed. Gauging GGG's level is pure ggguess work.jamesmcdonnell wrote:This is true; however, we have seen Golovkin tagged by hard shots and he has barely blinked, which usually indicates a fighter with a very good chin indeed, he also doesn't allow himself to get hit anywhere near as much as Benn did even at his best. GGG's footwork and balance is so much better than Benn, he was always falling in with shots.Tuan_Jim wrote:His wins over Barkley and McClellan alone allows us to gauge him at top level. Gets banged in the head by world class punchers, roars back, triumphs. We have no idea whether Golovkin can do the same thing, and he's already 34. Not a criticism of Golovkin; a criticism of contemporary boxing.forcefraser wrote:

To be fair, Wlad was almost 40 at the time, and looked a bit creaky in his previous fight.Tuan_Jim wrote:I understand what you mean but this may be a case of opponents flattering him. Had I not been so lazy I could have certainly come up with a better example. Any excuse to bash Wlad.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I do take your point however.jamesmcdonnell wrote:To be fair, Wlad was almost 40 at the time, and looked a bit creaky in his previous fight.Tuan_Jim wrote:

Re: GGG v Benn (prime)
Benn was a great fighter and a true warrior but he got a fearful pounding from McClellan in the first round. I was shocked it wasn't stopped but fair play he came back and not only survived but won a great fight (though the damage to McClellan was dreadful). Not sure Benn could survive the same with GGG.jamesmcdonnell wrote:This is true; however, we have seen Golovkin tagged by hard shots and he has barely blinked, which usually indicates a fighter with a very good chin indeed, he also doesn't allow himself to get hit anywhere near as much as Benn did even at his best. Most of us here would pick ggg over Benn, mcclellan, Julian Jackson and eubank, to name but a few.
How in gods name do people think kell Brook can beat him

Re: GGG v Benn (prime)
The referee stopped McClellan working in that 1st round, the fight really should have been over. As Brave as Benn was, that was among the most inept, officiating I've ever seen. It was almost as if the referee was determined the fight would go more than 1 round, most odd.Bermudaboxer wrote:Benn was a great fighter and a true warrior but he got a fearful pounding from McClellan in the first round. Re: GGG v Benn (prime)
I rate Golovkin, but those giving Benn no chance are kidding themselves. Benn came out in Dark Destroyer mode then there is every chance he'd find the bombs required to beat Golovkin. Course he could get taken out himself. But to say he'd stand no chance is ludicrous given his punching power, speed and ferocity.
We've yet to see Golovkin mix it with anyone near Benn's level....that's a fact.

Nobody is saying Benn couldn't have won, just that it's more likely he wouldn't have.lurkyshaka wrote:I rate Golovkin, but those giving Benn no chance are kidding themselves. If they fought ten times, I'd imagine Golovkin wins 8 of them.
Re: GGG v Benn (prime)
GGG is unproven pity there is none out there to test him, Benn tested himself against the G-man he won a fight he shouldn't have won but grinded it out in one of the most brutal fights seen In Britain and came out on top! Could GGG live with that? Who knows, I would like to think not.

Even with the bad official to come back and dismantle and break the G-man like he did, is impressive stuff.

What would have GGG been like coming up against a raging Benn like this?

Probably much like Michael Watson. Let's be realistic about Benn's failings as well as what he excelled at.Rexob wrote:forcefraser wrote:I watched Benn v Barkley again last night as a consequence of this thread. Re: GGG v Benn (prime)
Benn's biggest problem would be that it was his hooks and overhand right that caused most of the damage (from memory), GGG's more of a straight shooter, and he'd have been ramming the right down the pipe. I think it would have been a steady beating ending with Benn on the canvas.Ian1973 wrote:GGG stops Benn 100%.
Benn would have certainly have had some moments, he was no mug, and he was very dangerous when hurt, but GGG is too clever a boxer to get drawn into a brawl with Benn.

Re: GGG v Benn (prime)
God Iran was crude as hell, virtually no defence at all, winging away with massive hooks, he was a tough nut though, and if he survived Hearns onslaught he could have rallied against Benn, don't think he ever recovered fully from the first big shot, though he nailed Benn good and proper with an overhand right when he was hurt.

And got demolished soon after, great fight while it lasted.
