2016 Rio Olympics

Post by mike222 »

The draw has now been made and it has not been kind to Pat McCormack and Anthony Fowler who have to face world class opposition in the first round.

Teofimo Lopez against the frenchman was a joke. Lopez wins every round (announcers were saying so also) and every round all three judges give to the Frenchman.
Total joke.
I had hoped all the press about corruption would slow it up.
No way did Lopez even lose one round of that fight. Totally dominant performance.

Sorry to disagree but no way did Lopez win that fight. He was tagged with the frenchmans right hand all night long. With his hands down.

I'm just not sure what fight you were watching. I didn't see the Frenchman throw fifty punches and he couldn't have landed 20. Lopez stalked him, out punched him, landed harder and more often. What else is there to do?

The announcers thought he won and had to keep conforming their comments to reflect the poor scores and the crowd booed for five minutes when it was announced.

I agree, Lopez landed the majority of the significant shots. Ouhima was effective at appearing very active, but he was mostly burning frenetic energy by waving his hands all over the place.

And incidentally, the judging so far has been surprisingly fair.

Agreed I thought the other fights today we are all reasonably judged. This one just seemed so out of whack.

maybe I was watching the same fight as the judges :-)? Really, I was surprised how biased the commentators were towards the "american" fighter after the first round. I thought no way will the judges give Lopez the round and it was quickly confirmed when the scores came up. The american public use to favor an "american style" and tend to ignore all the punches they are eating. Then they keep complaining about robbery instead of facing reality.

I disagree, the Frenchman was dominant throughout.

I'll watch again today and count but I honestly don't think Olimha landed 20 punches the whole fight.

Well, no matter who won, Lopez did better against Ouimha than Rumroeng did :) lol

I have watched every single bout so far (fast forwarded some of the slower ones). I have agreed with the majority of the decisions and I can only think of one or two that I completely disagreed with. One thing that bothers me is how the Cubans get so much of the benefit of the doubt by the judges. If they merely dance around the ring and throw the occasional pot shot that is enough to get the round.

I think the lack of head guards makes it easier to score the fights. Clean blows are more easily detected.

I agree, the judging has been pretty good. Cubans may get some benefit from reputation and from the stylishness of their boxing. They simply look better. However, over the years they have gotten the raw end of the stick on some horrendous decisions. Poor Erislandy Savon should have gotten the win over Anthony Joshua in 2012 and he's been robbed badly in other fights as well.

Well the one thing AIBA has done right was get rid of the awful computer scoring that had turned amateur boxing into a bore fest. Now we are actually seeing boxers throwing punches instead of punch and hold, punch and wrestle and pinch and run. It looks better without the headguards also. The boxers are slowly learning how to move their heads to avoid cuts though we are still seeing cuts. i wish the cutman would not take so much time slowing the pace of the fight. I think it also good that the corner or crowd does not know the score like before and that keeps the winner from running in the last round.
Overall it is much more exciting boxing.

I would also like to see AIBA let countries wear their countries colors instead of red and blue since they are no longer using computer scoring. They can still wear red or blue gloves for the corner they are boxing out of. I'm sure a country like Ireland would rather wear a green uniform than red or blue. If you are from a country like USA, France, Russia, Cuba with red, white and blue in your flag, they could coordinate a uniform to go with the corner.

Major upset today with Katie Taylor losing to the Finnish boxer. The Fin Mira Potkonen is tough and has a victory over the US boxer Mikaela Myer who is in Rio. Potkonen beat Myer at the Tammer Tournament in Tampere, Fin in '14.

Levit got flat out hosed there. I think there's a general tendency to call robbery too quickly in amateur bouts, but that was awful.

Nistor, Butdee (vs a Russian), Otgondalai and Levit are the only 4 robberies I remember seeing here, others have been "contentious" (Lu Bin losing his bout for example) but those 4 have flat out stunk

Levit was blatantly robbed not only by the judges but also by the corrupt referee who stopped the fight when he hurt Tishchenko to give Russian a time to recover. He had a small cut near the hairline, why the f@ck it took 2 minutes for doctor to examine it? I scored the fight 30-27 for Levit and I think it was the worst robbery at this Olympics, worse than Nistor fight.
