Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam knocked out of Olympics in first bout
In a huge upset former WBA and WBO interim middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam, currently rated WBO #6 at middleweight, was eliminated from Olympic competition by 25-year-old Brazilian amateur Michel Borges via UD.
Re: Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam knocked out of Olympics in first bout
Ruenroeng and N'dam seem quite small at the weights they're fighting at, especially Ruenroeng, who looked tiny next to the Mexican who beat him in qualifiying.
With the pros not doing great, will people be less critical of those who have boxed pro but try to qualify for the Olympics? I don't think the top amateurs are nearly as out of their depth under amateur rules as some think, and the whole 'beating up on poor 17 year olds' is hyperbole in my opinion.

I do not like this new policy of allowing professional fighters to compete in the olympics. We already know who the best fighters in the world are, I want to know who is going to be the best in the coming decade. Amateur boxing is a totally different animal than professional and my guess is that you will never get all the best pros to compete. It's a huge career risk. I do like the new "no headgear" policy.

This. Amateur boxing is a different sport really. Obviously closely related but I knew this was going to happen. I don't have a problem with pro's competing.crusader wrote:With the pros not doing great, will people be less critical of those who have boxed pro but try to qualify for the Olympics? Funny to think that guys like Inoue, Estrada, Gonzalez, Ioka, Frampton, Fury, Kovalev, Canelo, Brook, etc never won Olympic medals but would be regarded as some of the best in the world today. Like wise prospects like Higa, Maruta, Kano, never had to go to the Olympics to be exciting prospects breaking through the ranksthomasjkelley wrote:I do not like this new policy of allowing professional fighters to compete in the olympics. An Olympic medal helps, of course it does, but for ever star with an Olympic gold there is several who never went to the Olympics and several gold medal winners who flat out flopped (Audley Harrison, Manus Boonjunmong) or refused to turn professional (Camarelle!)

Fantastic! Hope all pros get knocked out straight away, it's a disgrace that they can compete.
Re: Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam knocked out of Olympics in first bout
No idea why pro boxers and pro tennis players play in the Olympics. It's so stupid.

I have no problems with pro fighters competing at the Olympics. Pros from others sports do, and you will never convince me that a boxer who is paid by the government to train and go to competitions isn't a professional. The whole amateur thing in the Olympics has always been ridiculous anyway, I wanna see the best in the world at all sports competing.

Most pro boxers who think they can successfully make the jump to what has become essentially a different sport will be sorely disappointed. Scoring system is totally different in the amateurs...
Re: Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam knocked out of Olympics in first bout
olympics had to move with the times and also political and economical changes. It's all about the money and the Olympics has to try and maintain its reputation as greatest show on earth.Horse wrote:To win a nice medal.diddy wrote:No idea why pro boxers and pro tennis players play in the Olympics. as for the athletes, it's just another tournament that they go to with the aim of winning, enhancing their profile and marketability.

Made even more bizarre by fact AIBA (Amateur International Boxing Association) not only support pros in olympics , but set up the sole body whereby they can qualify!ClivePatrickLyons wrote:Nightmare Roy wrote:Fantastic! He didn't get knocked out though. It was a close fight which could be scored either way.

Further proof that pros in the Olympics is a joke, since the style differences and scoring systems have made them basically 2 different sports. Among other things, amateur judges dont pay much attention to body shots, even if they are effective ones.

What if Olympic Gold Medalists were REQUIRED to return every 4 years to defend their "titles"?
Could be interesting.

Amnat Ruenroeng got stopped on his feet by the clearly naturally bigger Frenchman Sofiane Oumiha. So ends the "professional boxers in the Olympics" experiment. For now.
Re: Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam knocked out of Olympics in first bout
Ruenroeng looked tiny for 132. N'dam was outsized too at 178, but Ruenroeng was made to look like a kid.

I think it's fair to say that KO power, as well as better stamina is more important in the pro's as in the amateures, there you just need to hit your opponend more often and keep standing.
The things I don't like about the pro's is that there is too much politics going on. If you're the heavyweight champion for several years, it can't be that your best opponent ever is rank 25 ish Szpilka, who already lost against another American.
If I'm the best heavyweight boxer in the world right now, it takes me at least 1,5 year (if I'm very popular by people that spent money), but more likely 5 ish year to be high ranked. And if the higher ranked guys simply don't dare to fight me, or don't get enough money for it in their opinion, I'll simply never achieve the top at all, no matter how good I am.
