Ricky is a boxer and gazza is an idiot or maybe you have some superior knowledge
Well they’re two retired sportsmen and I don’t know either of them enough to pass judgement. You seem able to separate “Ricky’s” booze related dramas from “Gazza’s” however..

Ricky Hatton gets paid to get battered round the ring whilst moronic footballers pay sluts to batter round the ring
I’d much rather put up with Gazza’s moronics than the majority of today’s f*cktarded headphone-wearing, characterless, mollycoddled f*cking desert-your-post, brainless Nando’s-eating crank’s moronics.

Sorry....hadn’t read this far. The idea of criminality has been touched on. Well I think you can go in someone’s garden without it becoming “trespass”....just as you can harrass someone half to death, legally. I think court papers have to be served and the victim must be made to suffer for around 24 months before things happen in England.

I saw the comments about Sheryl (think that’s the lass’s name..). Seemed like a lovely woman on the docu that I saw a few years ago. Level headed, kind. You just don’t know though. Nor do we know what he was like as a partner himself. So I would completely hold back from making any judgement there.

I nearly wrote this the other day, but stopped. I just never got what Gascoigne had to be depressed about. A fit wife, a good body, a few quid in the bank. He should really be some bronzed and healthy looking multi—millionaire that goes around as a guest of honour, raising money and profile for his chosen cares, enjoying his hobbies and popping up on TV to give his two cents’ on the game. I just don’t see what the problem was......short attention span? Easily bored? Low self-esteem? I guess tgat’s why it’s (depression) is called a disease of the mind...

Mike Tyson once said...let me try to get this right....he had a massive ego and cripplingly low self-esteem at the same time. Is that possible, or does it just sound good? I don’t know :maybe:
he had the personality to do well in retirement as well. Games shows, dancing on ice or whatever. He was always so wired wasn't he, poor sod.

If, and i say if, he IS suffering from depression, then youre post above totally misses the point. You could have everything a man could possibly desire and be suicidal. Chronic clinical depression is chemical in nature, it is nothing to do with 'being upset., it is not wallowing or feeling sorry for yourself. Ive been there and i can assure you that if you havent experienced it then you wont understand it. Boxers often experience depression in the afternath of their career, without the structure of a fighters life and the goals and plans that direct their lives they feel all at sea. Its perfectly understand how that could trigger a bout of depression.

If and you say IF James , Well IF he suffers from depresion and i mean real depresion then i have missed the point .But i suspect Hattons notoriety has being a hard drinking coko taking Jack the lad , has a lot to do with it , I retired early i was a party animal before i retired , but work was the main focus , running my buisness was my life it had took over , completly ,, I was up early on the tools ,(building ) in the morning ,, checking jobs in the afternoon , quotes at night , and still found time , god knows how to get on the piss , buisness lunches galore .. Strip clubs with the clients and building supervisors , I had a very very hetic life ..

Then i retired , and the lunches stopped , the phone calls died off , i found myself looking at the phone thinking why does'nt it ring , It was very hard to let go ,,, I got to the stage where the wife was worried the kids were worried about me ,, i'd get up at the normal time and sit round the house all day not even bothering to get dressed ,, just hanging around ,, when i did get dressed i would go to the pub and get pissed , i found plenty of new freinds there who were more than willing to come out on benders when the mood took me , only thing is they would run out of money half way through the night , guess who would pick up the tab .. and it would be slaps on the back and see you tomoro all round . I was Hatton, busy life , to no life , money in my pocket , and people willing to help me spend it ..

Wife spoke to our doctor , he wanted to see me and said i was depressed , here he said take these , some shite , I took them and they made me worse , My youngest lad came around he had a go at me , He said face it dad your not depressed your fooking bored . Anyway I took a good long hard look at myself and said HE'S RIGHT ,, I lived such a busy hectic life , normal life was horrible , so i went to the gym with him 3 nights a week , his brothers asked me to come and help them with work . it got me busy again , now i don't go to work with them, i enjoy being retired and doing nothing , i find i often wonder how the hell did i find the time to work , I still drink but no where near the same amount ,

I have since , took note of a few , in fact more than a few people i know, who are on medication for depresion , it interested me , and a couple i suppose really are, and theres something about them , like there almost suicidal , but most i think are just playing the game making excuses , and like me there helped along by doctors and welfare workers who are creating there own industry .. I fully support organizations that deal in depresion, because the black dog is a killer , but i just think its an excuse for a lot , and i was one of them , i was'nt depressed i was bored with to much time and to much money .. Hatton i suspect is just bored and misses the adulation and the cheers , He loves being the man of the people and the jack the lad, and will put that before his wife and kids , he's a pillock .

Couple that with family problems (his wife, I think he doesn't talk to his parents) and the urge to party and the money to do so. Sure when he's partying with hangers on and pissed and high; he feels good. But the reality comes back hard the next day. Especially on the comedown and feeling phylysically dreadful without a support system.... It's got to be a dichotomy of good times / hellish times. But the good times become less good and the hellish times become worse....

I don't know Ricky so it's difficult to advise, but a huge geographic move might be interesting. But with that has to come some work, some reason to get up, some drive.

Just going to rehab very rarely sorts anyone out. They may have good intentions but are basically snake oil salesman and based around 12 steps higher power nonsense - totally unscientificand Psychologically unproven, not to mention statistically.

Very few of these 'rehabs' prepare you correctly for the outside world. It's easy to stay sober in a 'clinic' with other people staying sober, living in a clean room, having nice concerned people around... But that isn't the real world. And it can cost up to £20,000 a month plus.

As we learn more about addiction from a biological perspective and psychological one we may find a solution. But at the moment a lot of 'treatment' is ridiculously based around amateurs following an outdated and religious prescription, put together by an uneducated religious pair seeking to convert people to a Christian pseudo religion.

Yes, rehab is hardly ever successful, but makes shed loads of money. There's no science behind their methods at all. In fact the 12 steps program, reinforces the idea that people are weak and powerless, which in the long term, is obviously not good.
ahem? wife is clean for 12 months no booze.

Coneye, your posts are getting better and better. You rubbed me up the wrong way when you were first on here but I have to say you genuinely contribute positively to this forum. I think that a lot of stars in various fields, are people with a hole in their life mentally, requiring that adulation and level of attention is certainly not the norm - and therefore when it all comes to and end, they're screwed. It's a pet theory of mine, very hard to back up with any statistics.

Me personally, I would only take medication as an absolute last resort, I went out with a girl who had suffered from depression since her teens (not surprising, considering her mother and father used to beat her up all the time) she left home at 14, lived in hostels and had a crazy life - but the drugs she took to lift her from her depression, turned her into even more of a zombie, but allowed her to function - sort of. She struggled to find any kind of balance, the drugs weren't the solution, but then nothing else was. Hers though was a permanent state of depression, not something that came in cycles.

Recent studies have shown that exercise, for mild to moderate depression, is as, if not more effective than anti-depressants, and without the side effects, and with lots of other associated benefits.

Maybe I'm being soft on Hatton, who knows, but I don't want to jump to conclusions, it may be that he was always depressive in nature, and the boxing allowed him to cope better, or he may be a plonker who deals with his problems on twitter, though for anybody famous, that seems to be the norm nowadays.

I think on reflection , it just shown how superior the russian was , after all , he came to England with a crook shoulder , only a couple of rnds under his belt in 2 years fought Ricky and the ref , and still made it a hard night for Ricky ,, All in all Kosta did'nt put up a bad show for a guy cashing out .. [/quote]

Agree to quite a large extent with Coneye's posts. A lot of Hatton's behaviour is hedonistic, thrill seeking stuff. He can't seem to leave behind the adulation, so has to go back to going out on the lash, getting all the back-slapping and re-living those famous nights after he'd won a fight, re-living his glory days over and over again.

I do wonder in terms of the psychology of all this though - the silence after the cheers, the quietness of life after being a famous person. Whether that makes some changes in the brain, whether you get so used to the highs from the adrenaline of performance, of a big crowd, of fame and attention etc, that normal life is really just absolutely boring and pathetic in comparison. Some people clearly can't cope with this and I don't think we should necessarily give them no sympathy or write them off as a dick head, even if at times that's what Hatton is.

I think the film 'The Wrestler' is a good one for this type of stuff and also some elements of Fight Club. Nothing really matters the same when you've been to the highs that Hatton has. People of the wrong temperament just can't deal with that and self-destruct.

may not even be that, he may just be an alcoholic, it creeps up on people you know, what was a jack the lad in his 20's enjoying more than a few beers becomes a habit they cant kick in their 30's and something more sinister therein.

I know Ive lived through it with my other half.

Doctor reckons you are genetically susceptible to different addictions, some smoking, some drink...which was an interesting theory.

He must have been producing massive amounts of endorphines in his training as well. I wonder if thats a link when sports stars go off the rails. It cant be healthy to just stop immediately like ricky used to after beasting himself the way he did.

Friend of mine's brother Lucien, (or Lucifer as he was known by some) - went from being a cocky jack the lad in his 20-30's, who was the life and soul of the party, to sitting drinking special brew on his own in the park, going on 3 day benders, and twice almost dying from alcohol poisoning, as you say, it just crept up on him, and went from being drunk in company and a social butterfly, to a lonely drop-down alcoholic - he had several relapses, but is ok, for now, but basically he just cannot drink again, or the same thing will happen. Every time he told himself he could drink again after he'd gotten clean, he ended up back in the gutter being arrested.

I find if I can not drink from Monday-Thursday, chances are I'll only have one big night a week, and I can manage that. Easy to end on the slippery slope where you're mullered 3-4 days a week if there's booze in the house.
