I understand - but that's not the way the mind works. There are loads of super talented, rich, good looking people that top themselves.... Funnily enough in 'developing' countries the suicide rate is extremely low.... Complexity of life can fornicate up someone's head - environment oddly hasn't necessarily got much to do with severe depression.

Ps not to be a deliberate pedant; but I'm not sure there's a famine in Angola (correct me if I'm wrong.)

Coneye, your posts are getting better and better. You rubbed me up the wrong way when you were first on here but I have to say you genuinely contribute positively to this forum. Feel like I owe you an apology. Cant really disagree with your point. Whilst depression is a serious, nasty business, it seems to be a "go to" diagnosis nowadays. :TU:
Yes this post is spot on (apart from the grammar ). There is an absolutely huge industry behind anti-depressants, and doctors/therapists are more than happy to support it. And whilst clinical depression is a terrible thing, I think a lot of the social stigma comes from the fact that lots of people claim to have it when they quite obviously don't (and there's no real way of disproving it), which trivialises the issue for the genuine cases.

Is it posible that the severity of the depression is linked to the effect it has on an individual? i.e. one person might cry over spilt milk whilst if another one gets blinded in one eye, at least they have another one?

What about experience of the illness and lifestage of the sufferer? As James McDonnell points out (I have found this to be the case also) when you have been depressed, you can sort of see the b*stard for what it is. Whereas if it launches an unexpected attack on an 18yr old....or a 14yr old....bloody hell. That’s an impact.

I know a single Dad who does not have a lot of access to his daughter. Mother sounds like a crackpot. Daughter is not even a teenager and is on pills for it. He believes any tablet meds will probably perjudicate her future wellbeing. I happen to agree and these drugs are new enough that you just know full fine well that the medical “professionals” are taking punts on it. It needs looking in to.

Does that make me an alcoholic, possibly, does it matter what you call it, probably not - what is certain is that alcohol is something I need to be very careful of. Just because the wheels haven't totally fallen off my life, doesn't mean it's not a problem, there's certainly been phases where it's come very close, and in most cases alcohol was implicated.

Anyway, enough about me; my point is that none of us can say for certain whether Ricky is a full blown alcoholic (whatever that definition means) - but certainly he's got a poor relationship with alcohol and is in a very bad place. Sure, maybe it was just a daft tweet when pissed, but then again, maybe not, or maybe indicative of a man in a very bad place right now.
This has just described my exact relationship with alcohol. I can't go out and have a few. If I go out and get on it, then after 3 pints I'm ON it. there is no middle ground, no just having a few, especially with certain mates. Therefore for the most part I just avoid it.

It's not an 'alcoholic' but I would say it's probably a 'problem with alcohol' as a closer to the truth description.
Same with me guys. It's all or nothing for me most times and it has led to some silly decisions although not anything particularly catastrophic. I am better now though than I was when I was younger. I have to be with my job really. I tend to slope off when I'm getting to the stage where I've had too much nowadays as I never fully trust myself when I'm too drunk.

The thing with booze is you have to learn to live with the after shock ,Like when you go out and end up a babbling mess , waking up the next day and cringing , thinking what the fack have i done . Only to be told you made a complete pratt off yourself , tried to sniff some old boilers knickers , while your mates egged you on , followed with getting your head and eybrows shaved , and looking in the mirror to find that your mates have painted you like a clown putting some slappers lipstick on you . ..  :TU:

Well when you can analize this situation , and say to yourself ,, On one hand the missis things i'm a pratt , a drunkard and a waste of space , but on the other hand me mates say , we had a real good night , and even though you can't remember you believe them .. So when you can analize it , think long and hard about it and say fornicate it , i'm going again .. without feeling guilty ..

Then and only then can you look in the mirror and say ,, your not a alcaholic , Your a det set party animal , a machine , a credit to the male species , , bring it on , and go out and get off your head again the following week .

And when her indoors moans , do what i do , tell her you married me cos i was a yob , and a nice tee total , bookworm would bore you . :TU:

I have sympathy for anyone who has troubled times and fully agree that money doesnt guaruntee happiness. A great book I read a while back about how someone managed to change their life around was by Duff McKagen of Guns & Roses. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good bit of reading, anyone with an interest in music and fitness will enjoy his book. He recovered near death experiences which were caused by drink and drugs to become a fitness fanatic. He had money, fame and adoring fans, If he could change his life for the better after all his troubles then so can anyone. :TU:

Just an edit incase anyone does follow up in that book. The one im referring to is called 'its so easy and other lies' as I just noticed he has another couple out. One earlier and one more recent that I cant vouch for.

Alcoholism is not a disease. That is a myth peddled by the weirdoes of AA, based on some religious nonsense by a 1930s cult that does more damage than good.

Alcoholism is partly genetic, partly environmental, and largely psychological. We are learning more and more about alcoholism and its psychological and physiological causes.

And dealing with addiction has nothing, nothing to do with a higher power.

Yes, completely agree. I went to an AA meeting once, at the time I was going well off the rails with booze, getting pissed 4-5 nights a week, and I mean blotto, barely holding down a job - I went to one meeting, and that was enough for me.

It's a pseudoreligion, with no basis in any kind of science or empirical evidence. a lot of the people there were seriously bloody weird.

As you say, there are now some proper scientific studies, and behavioural therapies for Alcoholism, my own problems with booze I think stem from the fact that I'm a naturally anxious and hyperactive person, and booze takes off the edge for me. If I hit the gym a lot, it takes away some of my energy and I tend to steer away from booze and other nasties.

dude while I appreciate your right to an opinion, I don't appreciate your condemnation of my point, like most counseling you take what is useful and discard what isnt to assist you, my wife is not a weirdo and without rehab would be dead and my children motherless, that is more fucked up than believing in a higher deity.
