After Marciano knocked him out he was never the same, too inconsistant.

yeah, but what about his boxing career before the Rock knocked him out ?
(which would have been Layne's 38th professional fight and the Rock's 36th pro fight, they both turned pro in 1949).

well he was good enough to win the 1949 National Heavyweight AAU Championship in Boston
and as a result got to box Joe Louis in two exhibitions in December 1949 and January 1950 in Salt Lake City.

Louis looks incredibly slow against Layne, who wasn't trying to show him up.. Layne had a very short career in terms of years -- only 6 yrs. 8 months, but he squeezed in 70 fights... He lost 6 of his last 7 fights which is probably why he quit... In contrast Bernard Hopkins fought 64 fight in 26 years.

Well beating the golden gloves champ in the national aau, beating the German champ as well as walcott and Charles indicates he clearly had a lot of talent. 96 wins in his prime with knockout power, I guess his manager has a point about th e top fighters avoiding.

Layne was good, but was on a collision course with Marciano. Layne took a terrible beating from Rocky.
