Nicola Adams , one of best UK amateurs? or...

Post by Wales »

Should Nicola Adams be regarded as one of best UK amateur boxers of all time? Wouldn't bet against her winning a second gold in Rio.

Anyone know her record?

One of the best UK female amateurs, no doubt, but the men still have to deal with a far bigger, more globally developed talent pool. I'm not sure that winning an Olympic gold in women's boxing is generally reflective of more ability than a man simply qualifying for the Olympics.

Incidentally, in many cases this Olympics female boxers merely need to win once, and against unseeded opponents, to medal. Compare that to someone like Sofiane Oumiha needing to beat a Cuban, a former pro world champ, and the world number two to do the same.

I have a wee thing for her like ;-) seen her talking in an interview but i think she is taken very down to earth. Plus she would batter me about if the housework wasnt upto scratch.

This. :TU:
Womans boxing is a 100 years behind the men's, far less talent and competitors. Good luck to Adams though she is there and doing it, so deserves the acclaim, you can only beat who is in front of you. :TU:

At London 2012, it made me cringe every time I heard some commentator say 'she's better than some of the men / male medalists here!!!"

No she isn't. Barring the strength advantages of being a man, the quality of her boxing is good, but about the level of a decent quality male club boxer.

Agreed. Different levels completely, shame she gets more attention than most of the male boxers because its not the same

I like her a lot. She's a great ambassador for the sport as a whole and lesbians, many of whom are fat knackers with bad attitudes. Nicola is nice but extremely focussed on what she does. One of our best.

She gets attention because she's unique I guess. She's a bigger story than the GB male boxers in the main because she's Olympic champ and most of the male GB squad are not even top 7/8 in their weight division.

To be fair mate she is very talented (it's not her fault there are fewer female boxers) works really hard, she seems a nice person, is really media friendly and has a great back story - what's not to like?

I guess I have zero interest in women's boxing and its not something I really care about. More press for Adams is less press for another amateur boxer who operates at a higher and more credible level

I saw three or four women's bouts, I was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't say it was good, but it wasn't bad.

Surely saying Adas isn't one of the UK's best amateurs is like saying Laura Trott isn't one of the UK's best ever cyclists.

Adams looks average compared to her male counterparts but I'm sure Trott would get effing smashed by the UK male cyclists in a race!
