Billy Joe Saunders off Canelo card after rejecting possible opponents
http://www.espn.co.uk/boxing/story/_/id ... -opponents
Plans for middleweight world titleholder Billy Joe Saunders to defend his belt on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez's next fight as a prelude to a possible December showdown are off because Saunders rejected all of the opponents presented to him, Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez told ESPN.com.
Golden Boy brought up three second-tier contenders as possible opponents for Saunders: Gabriel Rosado (23-9, 13 KOs), Curtis Stevens (28-5, 21 KOs) and Willie Monroe Jr. (20-2, 6 KOs). All are Golovkin knockout victims, but Saunders turned all of them down. Saunders also called out Golovkin for a unification fight earlier this year. When he was offered career-high money to face him in April, he turned that fight down as well.
Golden Boy's first choice was to make the match with Saunders and Rosado, which would get a fighter it promotes a title shot. Philadelphia's Rosado, a fan favorite who is usually in exciting fights, agreed to terms and signed a contract, but Saunders turned the fight down.
Has he shot himself in the foot?

Not comment on Saunders. I'm just happy Golden boy aren't getting a quality line up. Ortiz was meant to fight, hes out. Now Saunders. Good. Hope this is an all time PPV bomb for Golden boy.

Well Saunders is little known in the States, I think Canelo is the only one that will really bring in the buys as Smith is relatively unknown too. Probably will do like 300-500k buys, maybe that is generous.
Re: Billy Joe Saunders off Canelo card after rejecting possible opponents
Yea I really do have something against them. I'm hoping less than 300-500. They never released Khan Canelo but there are rumours it was around 350. Surely this can't be more than that. As for Saunders....he needs to fight soon.Ruthless-RKO wrote:Something against Golden Boy?lazboy wrote:Not comment on Saunders. I'm just happy Golden boy aren't getting a quality line up. first number were showing 600k for Khan-Canelo, i think it did less too. it was even a sellout and he thinks he can sell 100,00 tickets at AT&T Stadium? lollazboy wrote: Yea I really do have something against them. Re: Billy Joe Saunders off Canelo card after rejecting possible opponents
Billy Joe Saunders disputes ESPN's assertion that he supposedly rejected "career-high money to face" Golovkin.
The disparity between the size of the fight purses being claimed were significant... and it was interesting that Tom Loeffler did not attempt to contradict Saunders' statement on the matter... even though Dan Rafael proclaimed "duck" and refused to tell Billy Joe's side of the story.
For the record, I don't believe any of the opponents being proposed by GBP are capable of beating the likes of Lee and Eubank Jr.
So my guess is that Saunders or Fwank Warren aren't interested in the sums of money being offered, because it's not enough for them... even though Dan Rafael proclaims "duck" whilst refusing to tell Billy Joe's side of the story.
I get the impression that Dan Rafael's impartial journalistic instincts evaporate when he's compelled to comment on Saunders... and it's not surprising if you read Dan's comments on his weekly chat and also the abusive Tweets he exchanged with Billy Joe.
Does anyone recall Froch's Tweets about Rafael, because it led to the tone of Dan's future articles about Carl being slightly derogatory in nature?

Re: Billy Joe Saunders off Canelo card after rejecting possible opponents
Dan Rafael is a real piece of shlt... Everything he had to say about Kovalev before the Hopkins fight was never retracted... He wrote that Hopkins "staggered" Kovalev, which is a lie, and he made other BS comments following the fight.. He's extremely biased and he's an idiot. However when it comes to Billy Joe Saunders, the Brit is a bit of a prima donna... He had 2 fights last year, but only 1 was meaningful... BJS had no fights this year so how's he going to get any better? ... I think if he rematched Eubank right now he'd get murdered.

Rafael may be a POS, but so is Saunders. I hope WBO makes Khurtsidze his mandatory, and we shall see how high that purse bid would be showing Billy's real worth.

I don’t really care about what you choose to believe or not, but what is irrefutable are the widespread claims that Saunders reportedly turned down $4m to face Golovkin, when Billy Joe himself stated the amount being offered was in fact only $1.5m – he claims he could have likely earned similar sums facing Canelo, one of Haymon’s guys or engaging in rematches against the likes of Lee or Eubank Jr.Purse Bid Shakedown wrote:He does? Billy Joe Saunders is a new world champion holding the only belt at 160lbs that GGG doesn't already own, which is a rare commodity (a simple case of supply vs. demand), and he should therefore expect his fight purses to be significantly larger than when he was merely a world title contender engaging in British and European level fights, meaning that Sanchez, Loeffler's and Rafael's “career high payday” claims are utterly irrelevant, given their true context.
Dan Rafael has persistently and regularly accused Saunders of being a “duck” for not accepting the GGG fight and also refused to quote Billy Joe’s side of the story in any of his articles. We also know for certain, based on their exchanged Tweets, that these guys genuinely dislike each other.
In terms of whether anything I have stated in this particular post is true or not, since you seem to doubt my honesty, please spend about three seconds of your precious time to Google it.

I hope Canello's PPV numbers tank due to the fact that boxing fans will not support fighters that lie about wanting to fight someone in this case GGG and then blatantly duck them.

For the record, I nearly always supply evidence to support my claims, but whenever I’ve use them, such as when I got aggressively derided for having the sheer audacity to claim that Golovkin, Sanchez and Loeffler wanted to face Ward with a 164lb catch-weight stipulation, it results in silence… people stop commenting on that subject matter.Purse Bid Shakedown wrote:You put forward this implausible claim, you should be providing links.

OK so you're backtracking now. So he was offered a career high, probably double or better. So I take it it was you lying and not Billy, figuresEnlightened-One wrote:I have already answered this question, but you either didn’t pay attention or you’re unable to address this point:Purse Bid Shakedown wrote:So once again, what is BJ's career high? The following claim can easily be verified in three seconds by multiple objective sources
So no one knows for certain what offer was made to Saunders, since Loeffler did not contradict Billy Joe's claim.Enlightened-One wrote:... there are the widespread claims that Saunders reportedly turned down $4m to face Golovkin, when Billy Joe himself stated the amount being offered was in fact only $1.5m – he claims he could have likely earned similar sums facing Canelo, one of Haymon’s guys or engaging in rematches against the likes of Lee or Eubank Jr.
This is my personal opinion as to the reason why a “career-high” payday would be irrelevant based on Saunders’ ownership of the WBO belt:

fergus, take your meds -- you started quoting yourself.
By the way, if #COWARDBJS said that he was offered $1.5 mil, it doesn't mean that it is true. He could have easily done some math subtracting different fees and producing a net amount. It is hard to believe that he was offered less for the last remaining belt than Lemieux was before. By the way, the fight was supposed to be in the U.K., so why couldn't Warren produce higher numbers? Is that because BJS draws sh*t ?

Agreed…. Which is the reason why I also said the following:boxing_rocks wrote:By the way, if #COWARDBJS said that he was offered $1.5 mil, it doesn't mean that it is true.
Enlightened-One wrote:So no one knows for certain what offer was made to Saunders, since Loeffler did not contradict Billy Joe's claim.
Saunders’ clearly explained his thoughts on this matter during an IFL TV interview. I've pretty much quoted his words verbatim.boxing_rocks wrote:He could have easily done some math subtracting different fees and producing a net amount.
Perhaps what you have stated is true… I really don’t know. This doesn't relate to any of my previous claims.boxing_rocks wrote:It is hard to believe that he was offered less for the last remaining belt than Lemieux was before.

Billy Joe Saunders disputed the so-called “career-high” sums being quoted.Purse Bid Shakedown wrote:First you said Billy disputes he was offered a career high, now any talk of a career high is irrelevant lol. Cheers, happy trolling, troll
I also disputed the relevance of using the phrase “career-high” in the first place, since Saunders’ is a brand new world champion that is expected to command much larger paydays in comparison to when he was merely a title-challenger.
It is entirely possible that an offer can technically be considered “career high” for a new world champion that has never previously defended their world title, whilst also being regarded as derisory in comparison to the size of the purses that can be made elsewhere.
If you’re compelled to highlight errors in the literal meaning of the words stated in one of my previous posts and boldly proclaim “victory” over a grammatical mistake or some sort of ambiguity, then please feel free. Otherwise, what I've stated reasonably describes the actual situation.

Fwank Warren has issued a pretty compelling set of reasons to explain why GBP's offer for Saunders to fight on the Canelo-Smith undercard was rejected:
