IBF light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods, 0-1-1 against Glen Johnson in previous fights, has commented on what looks like a third fight against 'the Road Warrior' later this year. "I've happy Glen won Friday night and I am even more glad that he apparently looked very good. I can't wait to get my win back off him and I want to face a Glen Johnson who is at the top of his game - to beat him in his best form - and that looks like exactly what I will get the chance to do." Woods said he will take an interim fight before fighting Johnson. "I don't want to be out of the ring for 10 months or so and then fight Glen. I know better than anyone I need to be very sharp for him so (co-promoter) Dennis Hobson is looking at getting me a voluntary defence against a good opponent. Beating Glen Johnson means everything to my career, it is the fight which will make me the No.1 in the division."

I really hope Woods-Johnson III comes off. It's the most sensible option for both IMO.
Hopefully Woods will get things in place. An easy-ish voluntary in May as is being touted, then Johnson, then, fingers crossed, a win, which will see Woods in for a unification fight. (I would suggest Tarver but he'll probably be fighting Esch or starring in Indiana Jones 4 or something by then)

seems like woods could be facing the skilled italian southpaw pietro aurino in the meantime. Johnson is still looking good, if reports of the Hall fight from last night are to go by. he won't let any setbacks get him down. i saw his fight with GK Jones, and he looked damn good in that one.
Woods-Johnson III should be a cracker. Clinton's a much better fighter than he was and Glen never had it easy in those other 2 fights. very even matchup

I like Woods and credit to him for wanting to fight the best and avenge the fights with Johnson but i have one problem with this piece.

To me, to be number 1 in the division he has to beat Antonio Tarver, forget that Tarver is a heavyweight according to the scales lately and now seems to be more interested in being a film star. He is still the true champion at 175.
As a side, you hear about casual fans being confused about who the champion is in each division, due to all these titles flying around, i wonder if it has the boxers confused too.

Neri-- a small correction, Tarver is not the true champion, he is simply "the man to beat" at 175, but he IS 1-1 with Glen, so Johnson also has a decent claim to that status.

I would associate 'the man to beat' with 'the number 1 in the division'. By this i consider Tarver the true champion yes, as i think do The Ring.
By my reckoning Tarver won the light heavyweight title from Roy Jones Jnr.
He then lost it in his first defence to Johnson.
But he then regained that title in their next meeting, and defended it with that 3rd fight with Roy Jones Jnr.

I think Woods would beat Johnson in the 3rd fight, Woods looks like a different bloke lately, he looks so strong it's untrue.
But like most "IF" Woods beat Johnson i would love to see him in with Tarver, a fight which i think he would shock alot of the yanks and Clinton would do well in.

but Tarver's grip on #1 is tenuous. Why won't he face Johnson in a decider, or Woods, Adamek or Briggs? This guy hasn't dominated the division. I know, the guys he beat coming up were the same level as the men Jones was defending against so he deserves some props.
but every very good fighter he beat he also lost to. now he's fighting Hopkins and there's nothing to stop any of the other top 5 guys from knocking Tarver off his perch. I mean Tarver looked weaker when they traded than Roy Jones, who was coming off two devastating KO losses.

Tarvers as much the top guy at 175 as Hatton is at 140 (yes I know Hattons linear and Tarver isn't). Most people including myself had him beating Johnson in the first fight so that hardly counts as a belmish on his record. The other title holders are all very dubious. Adamek - beat Briggs but who did Briggs ever beat? Erdei linear but got 2 gifts against Garay. Woods lost to Johnson twice, on a good winning streak but has he beat a top5 guy yet?
Tarver beat the top guys to force his title shot at Jones. Griffin and Harding were top class top 5 fighters.
Tarvers leaving for bigger paydays which he needs at his age but hes the number 1 without a doubt and I'd pick him over anyone in the division.
I have no problem with Johnson beating Tarver the first time. Tarver was flailing like a girl, falling over in the late rounds. Johnson wore him down and kept bringing it. I felt that his blows were cleaner and better delivered. I'm sorry but it does count as a blemish. He took rounds off and allowed himself to be outworked. Johnson is the guy who has exposed Tarver's weakness - AT visibly shrinks when faced with pressure.
Johnson-Tarver I fits in perfectly with the pattern of Tarver's career. Take on a really good fighter, lose the first one and then win the next. Most ppl think Johnson would beat him in a third fight, looking at the difference in recent form - Johnson looking excellent beating GK Jones and R Hall and Tarver looking like stale shite vs Jones III

Adamek showed a skill and heart vs Ulrich and Briggs. briggs is a hard nut who had to win more than one eliminator to get his title shot and pushed Adamek all the way.
