I was willing Joyce to swap his right to the body for a left to the liver, or just a straight body punch to the plexus out of his hustling style. Left, right, left to the body; left, feint right, left to the body; lead right, left to the body; same stuff, but swivelling to look for an uppercut angle instead of the last body shot. I found it hard to score: Joyce did plenty and Yoka landed little, but most of Joyce's work was hitting Yoka's arms and gloves.

I think Joyce is in an awkward position of needing more rounds to be successful with his style as an amateur, but he's not strong enough to reach the major belts as a pro. He can improve, and I like the guy, but it's a tough road ahead and I wonder if there isn't another sport he could turn to for Tokyo. Judo or taekwondo, perhaps.

Folk on here need to get a grip with these accusations of robberies- it's as if any time a Decsion is a made that folk don't agree with then it's got to be some underhand reason. I have seen folk saying that Joyce clearly won? No he didn't. He was hitting gloves and elbows. He threw more punches but the cleaner work was from the Frenchman.

I thought Joyce clearly won the first- the judges saw it differently. That doesn't make them corrupt. In my opinion Joyce lost the next two. The second was a clear round for the French man who started to work at distance.

totally wrong - JJ was throwing shots through the frenchmans gloves for a couple of minutes each round without reply. obviously not all got through but good % did. Joka then threw the odd shot back with limited success. he never pressed JJ at any point.

and I wish you well with your faith in the honesty of Olympic boxing judges :verysad:

When you only got a few rounds to work, laying back rarely engaging and getting outworked shouldn't be rewarded at all much less with a Gold Medal.

Over the last year EVERY time the French guy's been in a very close fight he gets the decision....it's happened at least 5 times from what I've seen. On their own none of the fights are what I'd call robberies, but it's a bit odd when he repeatedly gets the benefit of the doubt.

It wasn't brilliant boxing from Joe but I'm at a complete loss as to how anyone could score rounds 1 and 3 for Yoka. Unless we're giving credit for looking a bit better technically while not actually throwing punches?

Why on earth would a successful boxer want to go into those sports? He can make a fortune in boxing, he can get some belts and maybe a first Dan in judo/TKD

Because he's not likely to do anything as a pro, he's 31 next month, nearly pipe and slipper time.

If someone said that a Judo or TKD athlete should change to boxing at the olympics people would have fits.

Id say its doing judo and TKD competitors a discredit to assume that he could just appear at the next olympics in their field. They have dedicated years to their sports just like most of the top Am boxers have.

Judo at least has a practical purpose in an actual fight and could be transferred to MMA. I don't know what the hell good being a Tae Kwon Do fighter does outside of Tae Kwon Do matches.

He's a talented customer, and he can already kick. Pele Reid and Skelton both learnt how to box within four years. Danny McIntosh was (is?) a decent boxer. Dillian Whyte...

The reason I mentioned those sports is because you're not risking your mental health if you persist at them while not making it big. Again, Joyce has the talent to turn his hand to quite a few athletic pursuits (Rebecca Romero won golds in rowing and cycling; Bob Hayes was the best sprinter of his day and an American football star; and John Regis had a go at bobsleigh!). If he turns pro he'll need very careful management and could get seriously hurt against the top names (is my hunch), and if he stays as an amateur until he's 35 he might just get gypped again.

It's up to him, but unlike most pros who don't have many other options, it'd be a shame to see him get hurt when he has.

Amatuer boxing should go back to the clean punches are worth points system.

At least that way, every point given would have to be held accountable by the judge when they are reviewed post fight.

What? Are you drunk?

So you're advice is that after winning a silver medal at boxing, eh become a pro what, cyclist, rower, kickboxer? He's 30, if he wants to pursue a sporting career, he should turn to boxing, where he can parlay his silver medal to success. You don't start a new sport at 30 and expect to become a top flight competitor.

You think there's no health risk to being kicked unconscious?

If we're talking about kickboxing or MMA, but have you seen taekwondo?

Hey, it's totally his choice if he wants to turn pro - good luck to him, but I can't see it ending well; that's all. I think he'll struggle with anything over six rounds in competitive bouts. The sharks'll come out due to his current status, and then disappear as soon as he's derailed. Let's hope he gets a good manager and proves me wrong, starting with someone like Dave Allen as a yardstick opponent. Don't let him repeat Harrison's mistake of wasting his best years against Eastern Euro cruisers.
