A general question from not a huge fan...will division hopping do to the MMA etc, that it did to boxing? (go a fair way to fvcking it up)
Re: MMA thread?
I think the gap between weight classes is large enough to stop this happening so much. It's not like it's only 4-6lbs difference like in Boxings lighter weights.bollox wrote:A general question from not a huge fan...will division hopping do to the MMA etc, that it did to boxing? I doubt he's going back to 145.p4p1 wrote:You don't think the cut might be harder than usual for him after fighting at 170?lefty wrote:You keep waiting on that next lossp4p1 wrote: Diaz was reportedly injured going into the fight. I think he can beat Alvarez.Tomasino wrote:lefty wrote:The two hardest fights for Conor at 155 are Khabib and RDA. Those are two matchups I'd pick against him. Everyone else I think he has a very good chance at beating at 155. The same goes for 145. For me Edgar is a tougher fight for Conor than Aldo is. Stylistically he matches up better with Aldo than he does Frankie.
How about Alvarez?

Looks like Mcgregor might not end up fighting till February possibly

Conor McGregor may not fight again this year after receiving a medical suspension of up to six months.
The reigning UFC featherweight champion claimed a five-round victory in his rematch against Nate Diaz at UFC 202 on Saturday, yet sustained injuries to his left foot and ankle.
McGregor was included in a list of injuries and medical suspensions released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission following Saturday’s event.

Usually those medical suspensions get cut down and don't go the full duration.
I missed the main card but I did catch the prelims on FS1. Cody Garbrandt continued his rapid rise at 135. Hoping to see him fight someone like Caraway or Assuncao next. The UFC really needs fresh blood at 135. I'm hoping they can sign Marlon Moraes, he's totally wasted in WSOF.

McGregor's cardio is really terrible, he was exhausted at the end of round 2. He is fortunate that he seems to hit like a mule. He beat Diaz pretty easily for me, thought the judges were a little generous to Diaz who really only had 1 really good round.lefty wrote:Looks like Mcgregor might not end up fighting till February possibly

Re: MMA thread?
I think he'd beat aldo again, Aldo looked badly spooked before the fight, and I think McGregor's got his number.p4p1 wrote:One thing I noticed about McGregor is he relies extremely heavily on his left hand counter(I'm a southpaw and most of us do) but with McGregor it's worse than most. The key is obviously going to be limiting right hands so he can't counter it. I think there's a few guys who could do that.
I see Dana is now saying that McGregor gets to choose his next fight. Trying to cash out with Alvarez I think. As I've said many time I think the Aldo fight was an anomaly(As in Aldo beats him if they fight again), LW is full of monsters and chances are Alvarez won't be champ for long so it makes sense from a business perspective for the UFC but as a sporting competition it's effing disgusting no one deserves a title shot over a majority decision win against a (supposedly) injured Diaz after being embarrassed by him.
Re: MMA thread?
I agree. I think Conor stops him again, just not as quick this time.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I think he'd beat aldo again, Aldo looked badly spooked before the fight, and I think McGregor's got his number.p4p1 wrote:One thing I noticed about McGregor is he relies extremely heavily on his left hand counter(I'm a southpaw and most of us do) but with McGregor it's worse than most. Also will be more cautious going in, which will allow conor more time to execute.danamba7 wrote:I agree. Conor intimidated the hell out of Aldo at the press conferences, on paper Aldo was the better technician, but it counted for nothing.
I think the secret to beating McGregor is to get him involved in a dirty boxing, clinching, wrestling match, and sap his stamina, he doesn't have a good gas tank, and if you can get through the first 2 rounds without taking too much punishment, then he's there for the taking in the later rounds.
Diaz fought a really stupid fight, but then he's not a smart fighter anyway, as evidenced by the multitude of scar tissue around his eyes. He relies on his ability to take punishment and brawl back, he has other wrinkles to his game, but he didn't use any of them against McGregor. He was also graceless in defeat, I don't know how he thought he won that fight. He should really have stopped McGregor in the 3rd round, he was out on his feet.
Re: MMA thread?
Yeah can't really argue with any of that. I suppose the thing about stamina is you can work on it and improve it although it is partly a natural gift e.g. Bisping so not sure Conor will ever be a true 5 round fighter. I love Conors striking though, very composed with plenty of power. Fought very different in both Diaz fights compared to the Aldo one. He mostly plodded forward, a little flat footed whereas against Aldo, he was light and bouncy on his toes, getting Aldo to commit. If he keeps working on his TDD, and answers some of Aldos leg kicks with his own, I think he'll always get the better of the hands, he's ridiculously comfortable in that mid-range.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Also will be more cautious going in, which will allow conor more time to execute.danamba7 wrote:I agree. Re: MMA thread?
I would agree with everything other than intimidating Aldo. Aldo was not scared at all, McGregor was definitely under his skin but not scared.
Aldo can win for sure he's better everywhere other that power which is McGregors X factor and I don't think that he keeps that power in the late rounds from what we've seen. Aldo just needs to be smart and stay away from the counter left and he should win. If he can take CM down I think it's a very easy night for him all seem to be big ifs though. Swapping leg kicks with Aldo would be suicide though, If Aldo starts landing then consistently it's a hard night for anyone, everything becomes easier for him.

Not that easy to cheer for him when you consider he's a wife-beater.
Also I don't think he has the stamina or grappling ability to ever win a title.

easier said than done. Also to be fair you also said you couldnt see anyway Mcgregor could win against Diazp4p1 wrote:I would agree with everything other than intimidating Aldo. Aldo was not scared at all, McGregor was definitely under his skin but not scared.

Yeah but do you think that Diaz fought the fight he should have fought or was honestly at 100%. Either way I would expect Aldo to wreck Diaz anyway.lefty wrote:easier said than done. Definitely easier said that done but it can be done. For me if I'm Aldo it's worth not using my right hand to take away Conor's counter left as he seems to be able to counter with it best of the left hand. Or making him lead would be smart as well. I doubt we will see it anyway Alvarez is an easier fight and his best chance to at least hold the title. Kabib is going to run through who ever is champ and I would say that even if Aldo was champ somehow despite his God level TDD.

You watch it. Lefty? Past that the beating he took from Cowboy. His biggest weakness is sub def, and he's not bad at it. I understand overcompensating for some of the absurd McGregor criticisms here, no way he's a match up favorite against Alvarez. Doesn't mean he can't win, but that gas tank is a real issue in that potential fight.
