Campbell wins this convincingly, it's not a good fight I think Derry is finished he's not looked good for a long time
Re: Luke Campbell vs. Derry Mathews - October 15th 2016
Think it is a clever fight choice from Hearn, this will give him some answers, he cannot be sure what to do or where to go with Campbell at present, despite beating Mendez it was a strange performance particularly from the visitor, who after hurting Campbell, seemed to suddenly not want any part of throwing a meaningful punch.
I know there were a few rumours he hurt something and perhaps that was the answer but I just ended the fight knowing a lot less about Luke than I thought I did, the Mendy defeat also to be honest was a poor performance, from a man who we hope will be a world title contender.
I think what they are doing is two fold, Mathews will or should check his chin and we should get some answers in that department, Derry still hits hard enough to find out anyone who has a deficiency in that area, plus we have the March fight against Flanagan to set this fight off against, lets see how Luke handles Derry etc, compared to how Terry handled him.
You could even throw in the fact that Mathews when hurt will always take it to his opponent and make them actually finish/fight him before going away, can Campbell finish a fighter who does not want to go away.
Now I know styles make fights blah blah blah but it's as close a comparison as you can do in this game of ours without taking a leap that perhaps you are not sure you want to make at this stage.
Several answers in one fight, got to be honest it works for me, I will be watching and actually interested in this one.

DM can definitely hit, look at the way Tel Flannigan handled him with caution..could pull an upset here if he connects, Luke doesn't look too sturdy at times ...

Handled with caution but also with relative ease. Campbell's chin could be suspect and I hope Derry tests it again be good to see him pull of the upset here.MightyWarrior wrote:DM can definitely hit, look at the way Tel Flannigan handled him with caution..could pull an upset here if he connects, Luke doesn't look to sturdy at times ...

Derry is 100% up for this fight he wouldn't take one he didn't think he could win, Campbell has been over and hurt against people I don't believe carry as much power as Derry. I think it's a great fight if Luke gets things his own way he can look sensational but what happens to him when he is roughed up , cut, hurt.
I remember Crolla being a 1-7 favourite against Derry 4 years ago and he folded when he was hurt and cut its possible same will happen with Campbell
Re: Luke Campbell vs. Derry Mathews - October 15th 2016
Fancy Derry to do the dirty here. He's a man with nothing to lose now, which are always the most dangerous.

It does seem a little weird going from Bantamweight to Lightweight, but it will probably all change again in a few years.littlepug wrote: wow don't know how this past me by, shame they have gotten rid of such an iconic weight class tho

Its a shame Mathews never capatalised on that Interim title and worked his way to another meeting with Crolla for a proper belt. I feel Derry has the style to always give Crolla problems and crucially, I think Derry knows and believes this also.
Just had the view that Derry never quite believed he could beat Flanagan and he didn't fight his usual fight. I feel this will be a last payday for Mathews - I think he's ticked all of his boxes in his career, 50 fights, a sort of ish world title, but I think the Flanagan defeat has quashed the ambition/belief that he can win a world title and he always said after Ormond - one more defeat and he would retire. Derry is such a confidence fighter, I think this is a payday for him.
Campbell by late stoppage or wide UD.

Honest mate Derry does not need to fight just for the sake of a pay day he wouldn't take fights he didn't believe he could win, when he was interim champion he had 2 fights offered to him defend interim vs Barosso or fight Flanagan for full WBO title, I think you would always choose the full world title fight over a defence of an interim belt , I appreciate what you say about not fighting his usual fight vs Flanagan but he broke his rib in the 2nd round so he couldn't put it on him as much as he wanted to.stujones wrote:Its a shame Mathews never capatalised on that Interim title and worked his way to another meeting with Crolla for a proper belt. Re: Luke Campbell vs. Derry Mathews - October 15th 2016
It's a classical crossroads fight.
I don't Derry has the height and reach (??) over Campbell, so will probably struggle with that and end up being outpointed.
Campbell clearly has ideas of being a player on the world stage, but hasn't really convinced many that he will be.

Very risky fight for Campbell. If he gets beat then what?
Re: Luke Campbell vs. Derry Mathews - October 15th 2016
To be fair, a world titlist (whom some seem to think could be the best in the division) hardly blitzed Derry in his last fight. I'd give Campbell a lot of credit if he dealt with Matthews in a more convincing manner.bripez wrote:No offence but an Olympic gold medalist with world title aspirations should be blitzing the likes of Matthews at this stage (especially given Matthews age and mileage).

Is Campbell a genuine lightweight?
I think he looks like a super feather.

Absolutely. We will miss him when he has gone. Not sure I'll feel the same about Campbell, Gavin, Butler or either Saunders.Stevieb8006 wrote:Love to see Derry go out on a big win, it seems likened been around forever. Total warrior, given us some great nights

Re: Luke Campbell vs. Derry Mathews - October 15th 2016
What puzzles me about Matthews is he was getting KOed in his losses 7 times in a row and at the tail end of his career when most guys chin worsens he can be described as pretty durable. Never seen anything like that...
