Fights you thought were closer than the public perception/scorecards

Post by IKSRTFO »

Marquez Barrera:
I thought this fight was a lot closer and that Barrera may have edged it. Barrera also should've been credited a knockdown. Since Marquez was on the upside and Barrera was on the slide, a lot of close rounds were scored for Marquez.

Cotto Mosley:
I remember this fight being closer than it gets credit for. Cotto didn't easily outbox Mosley nor did he beat him up. It seemed Cotto resorted to boxing in the later rounds because maybe he was gassing or hurt.

Robert Quiroga vs Akeem Anifowoshe

Two judges scores 116-112 by Quiroga. For me it was a bullshit. For me Anifowoshe was better in this fight.Kid landed much more big shots than RQ and showed better skill.

Floyd Mayweather vs Jose Luis Castillo 2: The Boxing public sees it as a near shutout for Mayweather I've scored it 3 times, and my scores have been 114-114 and 115-113 Mayweather...it was a competitive, close fight. The idea that Mayweather won it easy is bullsh*t.

I thought Valuev-Holyfield, Diaz-Malinaggi I, and Selby-Gradovich were closer than the public perception, and at least in two of these cases I think some of the discrepancy is explained by misleading commentary.

The commentary for Valuev-Holy was particularly horrible, as the Showtime team was highly biased towards Evander and droned on about how Valuev was getting outworked, even though he was significantly busier than Evander in pretty much every round, especially over the second half (I counted the punches after being dumbfounded by those comments). No doubt Evander landed better shots, but he really shut down as the fight progressed and near the end was hardly punching at all, while Valuev at least pumped his ponderous jab. The commentary was fairly misleading for Selby-Gradovich too, as Watt and Halling depicted it as some Mayweather-esque defensive clinic, even though Selby was regularly being caught over the first five rounds. Unsurprisingly, they pretty much ignored all those shots, but had no trouble raising their voices to point out Selby's connects.

At the other end, I was massively let down when I finally got around to watching Hagler-Hearns, because after hearing about a thrilling back and forth war I saw Hagler issue a fairly quick and one-sided beatdown to Hearns; to me it's one of the most overrated fights ever.

I thought Diaz won the first malignaggis fight,. I had Morales by a point in the first barrera fight.
