Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
Re: Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
He'll need to do a bit more than KO Teddy from Hangtime before we start getting excited
Re: Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
Dude doesn't look much of a physical specimen, but he's faced decent opposition in 4 of his last 5 fights. I doubt he winds up going much further than where he's at right now.

He looks in better shape than he did before.
Re: Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
That doesn't seem to be saying much. At any rate I think this 14-0 with 14 knockouts record, and being referred to by somebody on an online forum as a "New Heavyweight Sensation" is about as good as it's gonna get for him. I doubt the knockout streak continues against any Top 25 opponents.Cutman Scabbers wrote:gilgamesh wrote:Dude doesn't look much of a physical specimen, but he's faced decent opposition in 4 of his last 5 fights. The guy in the video is actually Olympic silver medalist, Worlds bronze medalist, and Asian Games champ Zhang Zhilei (11-0 with 7 KOs), who is about 6'6" and usually in okay shape. I think his best days were in the amateurs and I don't expect much of him as a pro, but to me he still seems more legit than Jun Long Zhang.

This is the 2nd or 3rd thread I've seen totally blowing this guy's success out of proportion. He's a fat guy in his mid-30s whose biggest win is over a C-list (and that's being generous) cruiserweight.

It would be great for boxing, though, if China could come up with a "new heavyweight sensation".

Re: Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
Here's the problem: two fighters from China have "Zhang" in their name. Zhang Junlong and Zhang Zhilei (names should be reversed in Mandarin, I think)
Zhang Junlong is the fat guy with little amateur pedigree.
Zhang Zhilei is the taller, much fitter fighter who won a Silver medal in 2008 as a super heavyweight.
Zhilei clearly has more potential and I wouldn't doubt he could make the top ten some day. Junlong I doubt will make any true top 15 or ever risk stepping up; he will probably continue to pad his record with nobodies (the WBA ranks him #14 but has asked for video proof of his bouts).
Both are in their 30s so time is somewhat of an issue, though today's HWs tend to fight forever.

I googled up a Zhang Zhilei fight. This one was his very first pro fight. Unfortunately it belongs on the Fake Fight thread.

This one is much more interesting, Zhang Zhilei vs Anthony Joshua in the 2012 Olympics -

Re: Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
I just watched the Zhang Zhilei - Joshua 2012 Olympic fight. I had to turn the sound off because I couldn't take the ridiculously biased announcers. Zhang was holding his own except for the knockdown which didn't hurt him. Zhang was having constant problems with the stupid headguard that kept coming down over his eyes. He's the best looking Chinese heavyweight I've ever seen.
Re: Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
It would be. The world's largest population and a ton of money there. Would be great for boxing. However, he still has a lot of work to do. Has the potential, though.x2x wrote:It would be great for boxing, though, if China could come up with a "new heavyweight sensation".
Re: Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
I think it would be great for the division if China could start delivering a couple of high quality Heavyweights. They clearly have the talent to do so. Unfortunately I think time and ambition probably works against these current prospects reaching world level, but if they both make a marked step up in their next few fights, never say never!

Said this ages ago lol. He's showing similar statistics as AJ and better statistics as Deontay Wilder.

14-0 with 14 KOs would put him number 3 on the all-time HW ATG list, just behind Anthony Joshua & a long way behind Wilton Norman Chamberlain whose 0-0-0 record will never be bettered.

You seem to be new in boxing, perhaps you should google Vitali Klitschko.Syntax Error wrote:14-0 with 14 KOs would put him number 3 on the all-time HW ATG list, just behind Anthony Joshua & a long way behind Wilton Norman Chamberlain whose 0-0-0 record will never be bettered.

At the end of September he's fighting a guy who has been in with Helenius, Chisora, and Whyte.asdfjkl wrote:Said this ages ago lol. He's showing similar statistics as AJ and better statistics as Deontay Wilder.

Assuming you're talking about this Beka Lobjanidze guy. Helenius, Chisora, and Whyte all KO'd him inside 4 rounds, and he's literally never beaten an opponent who had a single BoxRec rating point. That's almost impressive in its awfulness.

Ha ha true, but at least he's been in with them, so we'll see how Zhang does. It is to be expected that he'll KO him too, and then he can move up some more.
Re: Jun Long Zhang New Heavyweight sensation
From the 3 most known chineese pro heavies, i think he is the one who showed the most talent with decent hands and timing
