Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?
I thought any drug conviction would preclude you from entering the US?
From Wikipedia. ...
"In 2009, Joshua was put on remand in Reading Prison for what he describes as "fighting and other crazy stuff". He was made to wear an electronic tag on his ankle when released.
In March 2011, Joshua was pulled over by the police for speeding in Colindale, North London. He was found with 8ozs of herbal cannabis hidden in a sports bag in his Mercedes Benz. He was charged with possession with intent to supply a class B drug, an offence that carries a maximum 14-year sentence. Joshua was suspended from GB boxing squad and was sentenced to a 12-month community order and 100 hours’ unpaid work after pleading guilty at crown court."

I don't see why not.

True but those crimes are well documented .foxdog1923 wrote:Wikipedia not always a solid source. You can edit it if you like to whatever you like. Just gotta register, easy as.

Because..gilgamesh wrote:I don't see why not.
All violations of laws concerning controlled substances are grounds for disentitlement to the Visa Waiver Program, and indeed from a visa stamp
The US has a zero tolerance policy for drug convictions – even possession of performance drugs. To illustrate, recently a visa application was denied because the traveller had been convicted of possession of 1 ml of testosterone

So no athlete outside of the us has ever been allowed to compete here with a drug conviction? Yeah, I'd bet against that.

I know Martin Murray was denied a Visa for fights with GGG and JCC
A few football (soccer) players had to stay in uk when clubs went on tour to us too.
Dont know if athletes with drug charges have been allowed? Is there example of one

I don't pay much mind to off the field escapades of athletes around the world. I'd be shocked that our money grubbing government would deny a major sorting event, including taxing the fighter, because he got caught with a joint.
Re: Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?
Joshua should get one of those University Degrees by mail from a PO BOX & then he could sell a whole lot of drugs in America LEGALLY.
With virtually no comeback on him.
It's not even a proper degree, but you can dish out drugs willy-nilly.
But selling a some grass. That is SO EVIL!! It grows in the earth. It cures many ailments. We have to punish anyone associated with it.

In America, it all comes down to the all mighty dollar. Not ethics, unfortunately. Joshua could have kidnapped a nun and still be allowed a Visa to enter the USA with the money he's about to make people in this sport. Granted, pot is pretty much legalized here in the US or about to be shortly so it's not like he's a despicable criminal or anything. Either way the right palms will be greased and in the USA that's all you need to do to get what you want. We are a pathetic country.
Re: Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?
I've been told I'd struggle to get a visa for a holiday to America but then again AJ is an athlete and would generate revenue and money talks at the end of the day. It's one rule for one guy and a completely different for someone of importance.

likes of Amy Winehouse refused entry.caldo2025 wrote:In America, it all comes down to the all mighty dollar. Not ethics, unfortunately. Mike Tyson now banned from UK.
like you say chances are Joshua will apply and be granted entry. Mad when likes of Martin Murray and Lilley Allen are banned tho.
Re: Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?
His deal with Showtime would suggest that they're pretty confident that he could go to the U.S in the future.

A few points to consider:Wales wrote:Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?
• The precise nature (in legal terms) of Anthony Joshua’s misdemeanours are unknown (to casual fight fans), with the most recent offence committed more than 5½ years ago, when he was only 20 years of age (below certain US criminal activity age thresholds)
• Team Joshua have recently claimed that they’ll be competing on US soil early 2017 (in either New York or Las Vegas)
• Joshua recently signed a multi-fight exclusive contract with Showtime, with a view to them hosting/televising his US shows
• There’s nothing detailed in the U.S. Embassy & Consulates website that should compel anyone to believe that Joshua’s minor misdemeanours would automatically warrant permanent ineligibility for Visa entry into America
• A significant number of people from the UK, with criminal records, are granted Visa entry to the United States each year
In my mind, contracts wouldn’t have been signed and media announcements would not have been made if there was any uncertainty surrounding Joshua’s US Visa entry status.
Re: Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?
Good post. Playing devils advocate being caught with 8 ounce of a controlled substance isn't classed as "minor misdemeanour" by US immigration.Enlightened-One wrote:A few points to consider:Wales wrote:Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?

Tyson had signed /agreed numerous contracts to work in UK only to be refused entry. As had Lilly Allen prior to her refusal , and Peter Fury wouldn't have travelled had he thought he'd be refused.
Looking at posts above seems everyone is confident AJ will get in. Hope so. UK promoter allegedly raised some doubts too. He's quoted as saying "as it stands Joshua would be refused a VISA"

Re: Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?
Interesting news from Eddie Hearn today… it seems that there are no imminent plans for Anthony Joshua to compete on American soil, because his next three bouts will be staged in the UK (Cardiff in November; The O2 in March; and then Wembley Stadium in July).
So by my reckoning, it’s probably worthwhile abandoning this thread for the time being and then perhaps revisit this topic again sometime during August of next year.

Anthony Joshua confirmed over the weekend that he is now able to enter the US. All the relevant paperwork has been sorted out.Enlightened-One wrote:A few points to consider:Wales wrote:Will Joshua get a Visa to enter USA?

Was a fully funded elite U.K athlete at the time - would have been receiving £30-40k a year tax free. More than enough for a young guy living at home to buy a merc on finance!Bricks wrote:Wales wrote: A Mercedes while an unproffesional amateur no name boxer with no other jobeh? that Olympic funding must have stretched a long way
