Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
Its always started with the elite amatuers all the way to the days of Joe Louis! The amatuer program for the american hasn't been relevant for many
years now UFC will eventually catch up with boxing we have no outstanding amatuers anymore.

Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
Yeah. Been dead a few years now. Everyone just sitting back waiting for ggg and canelo like they waited 7 yrs for pac/may weather. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Decent fights are now being called classics. That's how starved boxing fans are. I go onto the main boxing pages and I see headlines featuring nobodies with 14-5 records. Who the eff are these journeymen posing as headliners. Oh well. I guess nobody wants to get punched in the face anymore

Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
dude its MMA now. I swear everytime at the gym i see groups of mma guys training together with their coach. It'll be like 5-6 of them cat wearing
their No Fear shirts. Boxing is going south for real I'm serious.

I wouldn't agree
Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
There's a lot more to boxing than America.
Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
Its bigger world wide as its ever been, its made necessary changes to survive in the modern world and has steadily loosened the USAs grip as a boxing superpower, yes the very biggest fights still happen there but there are now boxers across the globe that are unknown to many but making megabucks fighting in their own country, boxing ain't dying its still rolling with the punches
Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
My personal experience is that UFC is overtaking boxing in USA. Single promoter means best fight the best and ranked fighters fight guys ranked just above / below them. A single ranking system also makes it clear who's who and how high they go if they win.
Where UFC falls down , in UK (IMO and presuming elsewhere), is its all but solely a US based sport making it hard to follow. And also, unlike boxing, there's no amateur feeder sport for young kids. Amateur boxing provides a regulated and accessible road to the pro game. Something UFC (and MMA as a sport*) doesn't have yet.
*when i say MMA as a sport - the term MMA originally referred to the fact the combatants competing had skills from a range of Mixed Martial Arts. Fast forward 20 odd years and you can't step into the cage without being , at minimum, competent, in each discipline.

Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
Boxing is basically dead in America.
When I was in high school in the late 1970s, the average guy knew Monzon was M champ and Danny Lopez was F champ. Even girls were aware of an Ali-Frazier or Ali-Norton fight.
Today I bet you almost no American high schoolers know who Spence, GGG, or Wlad even are.
Fortunately for people like me, youtube and media globalization lets me keep up and watch matches from all over the world.

Then at the local gym when I do see a pro boxer training most of the time it's like one or two of them using the equipment, or using the sauna. But
mma? Damn it will be anywhere from 5,6,7 guys with their onit shirts or ufc shirts tatted up looking all roided out. This is just what I'm seeing on
a daily basis.

Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
Just thought of something....those Ultimate Fighter reality shows have great exposure. I can walk up to a guy and he'll know who Kimbo was, but if
I mention GGG he will be clueless. They'll know who Chuck Liddell or Rashad Evans are before they've heard of a Klitscho. I'm serious. And you can
totally forget about walking up to someone random mentioning Thurman, Garcia, or Shawn Porter. They know who Jon Jones is though!![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Makes me realize now Mayweather and Ellerbe are genius at promoting. Ellerbe "I'm Here To Introduce The Highest Paid Athlete In The World! None
Other That Floyd....Money Manyweather." Damn Floyd and Ellerbe knows how to sell tickets and PPV

WHats killing the sport apart from
a) the dearth of talent amongst the former powerhouse cradle of world boxing AMERICA
b)the rise of eastern European boxing which is a poorer spectacle in comparison (more boring fights and fighters with notable eceptions of a kovolev, GGG and ivan drago)
Above those 2 reasons whats killing the sport is the poor asswipe promoting of a SKY sports in the UK who sell shite as PPV , have no imagination on how to promote a fight beyond the "gloves off/ they hate each other mode", their inability to help small promoters and allow regional rivalries and true rivalries to grow.......
and the fact you never see the matchups when u should.........fury-Joshua.....fury-haye.....klitchko v Joshua....GGG v Assaule Alvarez.......Garcia v Thurman.....kovolev v ward (even this 2 years late)...Stevenson (39 now) v kovolev or ward.....
Also the fact you can switch on UFC anytime any fight......and its a better more exciting unpredictable spectacle...

Wlad fights out of Germany, I've met 3 young German women from my Job everytime I shadow box and say " do you know Klitschko" all of them have said yes. This pretty attractive one recently even said "I heard he is falling off, he lost the belts!" I was pleasantly surprised
Spence is a prospect/contender you fool, A Ton of people know Mayweather/Broner.
I live in FL boxing ain't dead here, maybe in North dakota it is but then again, North Dakota its self is Dead

Where are you talking about at an MMA gym? What city do you live in? Thurman, garcia, porter are definitely not crossover but either is Jon Jonesbnovelist wrote:Just thought of something....those Ultimate Fighter reality shows have great exposure. You'd be surprised man, you see trashy people wearing "Tapout" or "american fighter" shirts and they just wear them to look like tough guys. Ask the next guy you see wearing a Tapout shirt who they have in the next big UFC fight. I have and you'll be shocked they'll be like uhhh never heard of him
Yes Rhonda Drowsy captured the imagination of some casuals because of all this Feminist/pro clinton/left wing propaganda that is plaguing Murica

I'm awake no it's not dead in FL, thriving crossover success? Of course not. Go to some fights man whole different atmosphere. I agree Boxing needs some serious changes but don't just write off the sport.Tony1244 wrote:Boxing is dead in Florida. It's going to be the same rinse and repeat, America is going to get another crossover star and people are going to say "Once he retires boxing is DEAD"

I don't want boxing to be dead. Just the opposite. I've been to dozens of fights in Florida. About 10 years ago they had the Heavyweight Factory at The Hard Rock Cafe. Most people went disguised as seats. In other words, over 80% of seats were empty and most people that were there were relatives of the fighters ! Boxing is relatively dead here compared to other major sports including UFC.
The other posters are correct. The UFC guys are known to Americans. Boxers are not. Those were German girls, as you yourself alluded to.
Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
Yeah Klitschko is German not American. I've seen people leave an MMA fight in disgust at the state fair, every fight is a fight by fight basis. I saw Crawford stink it out in Orlando than Cotto light the crowd up.Tony1244 wrote:StrapMeUp wrote:I'm awake no it's not dead in FL, thriving crossover success? Of course not. Briggs is holding it down in Hollywood, FL. Guarantee you if the Heavyweight factory had another show at the Hard Rock it'd be a different story
Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
The Klitschkos are Ukrainian, but they have fought out of Germany. Why would it be "a different story?' You incorrectly assumed I haven't seen boxing cards in Florida. You were wrong about the Klitschkos being German, so I'll bet if the failed heavyweight factory came back, you'd be wrong again there too, or wrong 3 times, if we're counting.StrapMeUp wrote:Yeah Klitschko is German not American. Dude you're a clown. I clearly said "Wlad fights out of Germany"
I know the Klitschkos are from Ukraine. I know there back story and how there dad cleaned up chernobyl.
And I didn't incorrectly assume you haven't been to fights here. I personally have been to some good fights here with good atmospheres, get a grip.
Thurman-Callozo was a good fight
Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
decent fights are being called classics, as said above, thats very true.
boxing is in a good place but i can see as well as said above us having to wait stupidly long for ggg-canelo and that will hurt the sport of boxing more
there definitely needs to be more fights like kovalev-ward.
i think MMA shows in new york city will pose a threat to boxing as well

Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
Thing about UFC is that it won't stay the way it is forever. Most sports pay out roughly 50% of money coming in in salaries. UFC pays out 10%, which when you consider what they put themselves through is a disgrace. Sooner or later a big star will break away and promote themselves so they get paid properly (Connor was trying this and might try again). Then the situation will be just like boxing - lots of fighters fighting for different promoters and ducking fights.

Nothing wrong with not knowing something. Just something wrong with denying what you wrote.
I never said there weren't great fights in America, there clearly are great fights and fighters in America. "Boxing is dead," references American fan interest compared to decades ago.

boxing did one , The Contender, remember? Shame they binned it although fight highlights were bit naff. Re: Boxing Is Slowly Dying Ya'll
Boxing may be doing great worldwide but that's not much consolation to us Americans as there is less and less boxing here.
Do-gooders have been trying to find a way to kill boxing in America for as long as I can remember and they are slowly succeeding.
Boxing will never be illegal here but it is on its way to being KO'd by regulations.
Here's the latest thing I've read on the do-gooders war on boxing:http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/new-rul ... ork-352292
If that gets enforced boxing in the state of New York is over.
