The HEAVYWEIGHT game: *CLOSED*

Post by Crease »

A game which will be decided by the wisdom of the crowd.

Each of us has our own opinions on who was better than who, or which achievement was greater than others.
But let's bring it all together and allow simple mathematics to decide it all.

The game is this, each poster names and ranks his Top 10 Heavyweights of all time and with each ranking comes a certain number of points.
First place gets 10 points, tenth place gets 1 point - and everything fits in between.

Posters are NOT allowed to edit their posts or change their minds as it will effect the overall accumulated points for each fighter.

I will keep a track of the total scoring each time I'm online. This game has a 30-day deadline, after 30 days - the final points totals will be decided.
Our deadline day will be October 1st.

Posters declared: (30 thus far)

So Marciano beats Sonny Liston??? That's shooting fish in a barrel for Sonny -- just like he did Patterson.

Marciano was decked by Archie Moore and took 9 rounds to club him out... Patterson finished Archie in 5 taking nary a good hit.

Lol, all I can do not to ask how anyone in their right mind can put tyson over holyfield. Not like it's different eras, much better resume and h2h dominance. Tunney is curious. He had less than a handful of fights.

Not at all... You guys all have the same golden oldies on top... You drink the Kool Aid... My list starts with Anthony Joshua, Vitali Klitschko, Lennox Lewis, and Larry Holmes... Didn't Tim Witherspoon, who had 15 fights, nearly beat Holmes??? Didn't Michael Spinks beat him??? Those legends of the past aren't sacrosanct.. I go by how they would all do in a round robin versus all other Heavyweight Champions -- who would have the most wins.

So now Marciano beats Mike Tyson??? ... Didn't Tyson crush ATG Light Heavyweight Michael Spinks in 90 seconds??? Spinks was built up to 212 pounds of course, but it didn't matter.. And didn't Marciano fight most of his Title Defenses against Light Heavyweights??? He seemed to struggle with those old men too.

Top 10s are normally based on achievements, level of opposition, number of defences etc.. not who could beat who.

Well said Tom. If this guy does put up a top ten list compromising of todays fighters, then it may show him just how misguided he is.

There are three ways I could go about this.....pound for pound prime HW, Which would have Ezzard Charles far higher....or

Overall career effectiveness which would eliminate Bowe from the list.

Or Prime, (Even if that prime is measured in nanoseconds) Head to Head overall effectiveness who I think would have the greatest success over the most styles and number of champions. I chose the third system.

And honestly, If I had to pick only one of the Foreman's he'd be lower on the list, The Foreman I'm envisioning is an amalgam of himself.....so he rates better than the sum of his parts so to speak.

By the way, if the rumors of Holyfield Juicing are true, he would drop from the list I suppose. But I never was convinced...so I left him in.

0. The Chambermaid
1. Ali
2. Louis
3. Foreman
4. Holmes
5. Lewis
6. Frazier
7. Holyfield
8. Bowe
9. Liston
10. Charles

- Larded hinds can never comprehend that fight minds know Tyson and others have a vastly superior title heavy record compared to Mr Field.

1 Joe Louis
2 Wlad Klitschko
3 Jack Dempsey
4 George Foreman
5 Sam Langford
6 Ali
7 Vitali Klitschko
8 Rocky
9 Jim Jeffries
10 Joe Frazier

Hope this poll is tallied by sum totals rather than idiotic median.

I am going with BoxBuzz third system “in their prime” (on their best night) . . . but judged within their own time i.e. I am assuming earlier fighters would have been even bigger men had they been born later in the century, e.g. a 187 lbs. Dempsey going against a 220 lbs. Holyfield would likely have gotten murdered, a 220 lbs. Dempsey is a different story. Boy this is difficult.

1. Dempsey
2. Johnson
3. Louis
4. Ali
5. Sullivan
6. Liston
7. Tunney
8. Holyfield (assuming not juiced)
9. Foreman
10. Holmes

I get the feeling I am going to be the only one who puts Sullivan on his list – lol – Just from the heart I wanted to put Big George higher, but I feel Ali exposed him so

I dislike doing this so much I don’t want to hit the damn submit button.
