Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
Okay, I might show that one next as we haven't had an all British fight for a few weeks.Autobarn wrote:For excitement and drama, Brodie v Neil Swain is the second best. Fight of the year candidate, 1997 and a British title classic.
Any objections?
Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
Don't mind and that fight is on YouTube in 4 parts as well. Did mention the Jorrin fight which I've never seen but have been told Brodie was unlucky not to get the decision.Horse wrote:Okay, I might show that one next as we haven't had an all British fight for a few weeks.Autobarn wrote:For excitement and drama, Brodie v Neil Swain is the second best. Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
Hardy v Canizales is a classic. Hardy rose from a knockdown to stage some serious rallies.
Love Canizales' fights with Seabrooks (twice) and Hardy 1. I actually thought Hardy looked winner, although I confess to not seeing all the rounds. Orlando certainly got his revenge. These were some of the most attractive fights to watch in the lighter weights due to the punch repertoire and for this - and the superficial resemblance to Duran - the Americans vastly overrated him.
Respect for his consistency defending 15x but he was a major disappointment against Vasquez for the 122 title, who outboxed him without Orlando putting up too much of an argument. No excuses about weight either, as Vasquez also was a bantam who moved up to super bantam. The Texan seemed to lack confidence, he had a kind of nervous tick, and the zig zag gimmick only Seabrooks fell for.

Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
Billy got robbed. I ended up on a session with him not long ago and he is a very happy go lucky joker type, I think I did his head in asking him real deep questions! He does a bit of MC'ing now. The rematch was just as bad as McGuifan-Cruz, maybe worse, putting a ginger guy from Sunderland out in that heat.
Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
Hardy couldn't miss the right hand. Made the "number 5 pound for pound" look very shaky.
Courageous - getting up from that terrific body shot - and skillfull challenge in a superb contest.

What do people think of the "supplementary" fights?
Are people watching them?
I think that it is about time to start showing 2nd fights from fighters.
Does anyone object to that?

Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
McDonnell's challenge to the great Azumah Nelson was gruelling and a very tough fight with a nasty finish against Jim.
Interesting Nelson blowing away Pat Cowdell in a round first time over here and returning, one weight up, with a hard, come from behind stoppage in the late stages.

Jim McDonnell being a prime example, given by Autobarn there. Went 12 with Brian Mitchell and nearly 12 with Azumah Nelson and stopping McGuigan in his last ever fight would make a solid supplementary fight
Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
Chris Pyatt vs Sumbu Kalambay as I've still to get a Kalambay fight in and Jim McDonnell vs Azumah Nelson would be my picks.
I'll get 2 more fights in over the next 2 weeks, then likely fall 9 weeks behind again until my next spell of nightshifts at my work.

We couldn't go through a year without giving this one a watch.
If we were to go for someone we haven't seen yet, I was just looking at Murray Sutherlands record.
He faced Saad Muhamad, Thomas Hearns and Michael Spinks twice. Plenty scope for supplementary fights.
He also had what looked like a war against Chonk-Pal Park for the IBF title.
He won that title in a 15 rounder if we wanted to score one that he actually won, he fought some guy called Ernie Singletary, the title was vacant, doesn't exactly get the pulse racing to be fair.
Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
I don't think that Sutherland vs Singletary is currently available, so I think I'm going to have to show a couple of his best losses.davie wrote:Nigel Benn vs Gerald McClellan

I honestly don't know how anyone can watch Benn vs Mcclellan after what happened. It's a horrible, tragic fight. I've analysed the early rounds knock downs just due to discussion but never have I watched it again after seeing it live. Horrific.
Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
I just think the historic significance of it, merits it's inclusion.Tomasino wrote:

I've watched that, I've watched the Eubank vs Watson fight back.
What happened was unfortunate, but it's a part of the sport and one the fighters enter into knowingly.
It's not like people are reveling in what happened or celebrating it, like some ghoul watching video nasties.
If there is any point to a British fight history challenge, then there are few more relevant or significant bouts in terms of British boxing hitory
I can understand why some would find it difficult to view again and would understand anyone not wanting to view it again but personally, as long as we are respectful in our views, I don't see an issue. We can speak of the fight as an event and the consequences.
I would say, in light of recent events, the suggestion could have been better timed but we can't just shut our eyes and pretend these things don't happen in the sport we love. We pay our money to watch a blood sport, one where participants often get hurt or worse.
They do what they do to entertain you and I, as well as their own reasons, that places a burden of responsibility on you and I. If anything I think these kind of events deserve recognition and discussion and if anything they're a tribute to the sacrifice made by those who have the most to lose from this sport.

Davie, it's clear that Gerald is suffering from a serious brain injury early on in the fight, its relevant to me only as an utter tragedy, not a fight that's enjoyable. I understand folk may feel different
Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
I haven't noticed Clinton Woods mentioned on this thread.
3 close decision fights with Glen Johnson, a win a draw and a defeat, 2 points victories over Julio Cesar Gonzalez and getting stopped by a prime RJJ should give plenty of options for viewing.
With a number of title defences and also fights at commonwealth, British and European level, someone must remember a cracker involving Woods

Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
Good point. Third Woods-Johnson fight, however you scored it, was an outstanding battle. A dramatic revenge win, over the 2004 fighter of the year?
Re: British & Irish boxing 52 fight history knowledge challenge
I think it's probably because most of his fights are relatively recent.davie wrote:I haven't noticed Clinton Woods mentioned on this thread.

Other fighters from recent years like: Carl Froch, Ricky Hatton, Scott Harrison, Junior Witter & Howard Eastman haven't been shown either.
If we do this again next year then I think more recent fights will be shown then.
