Browne-Oquendo negotiations underway

http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/browne- ... way-352409?

WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza has announced that negotiations are underway for a fight for the vacant WBA regular heavyweight title between Lucas Browne and Fres Oquendo.

“Browne’s title shot came out of a legal settlement we had to do after we got sued by Browne’s people for stripping him,” Mendoza told Sky Sports.

“I think the WBA grounds were very strong. He took us to court and we settled for giving him a title opportunity…that’s what we ordered. We have been listening to the promoters, that’s a very tough fight to sell. That’s a very tough fight to make because of the amounts of money, but they are negotiating right now. We’ll see what the outcome is.”

The Lucas Browne issue has been more or less resolved. Browne, who upset Ruslan Chagaev in March to win the WBA World heavyweight title, was stripped for failing a drug test. He denied any wrongdoing, took the WBA to court and won, so he will likely face Fres Oquendo for the title in his next bout.

The vacant regular title even though he they have constantly been saying they want to just have one change at each weight.

The WBA are a stain on the sport.

Looks like if you threaten the WBA with court they give you a WBA heavyweight shot.

Both these fighters win via court. Got to be a first.

Oquendo didn't just threaten court action. He went to court and won. It was a court order that made him the mandatory.

The details of what happened in Browne's case should be known in the next few days.

Q & A with Lucas Browne :

http://www.foxsports.com.au/boxing/boxe ... 7d2b5d2213

GRANTLEE KIEZA: The WBA last week gave you the green light to be world champion again. You must feel vindicated?

LUCAS BROWNE: It’s been a long time coming. It has been a very stressful six months since I knocked out Chagaev only to have the title taken back. The WBA were somewhat on my side. They realised I hadn’t taken anything deliberately. It was still a positive test and I can’t argue with that. It is my responsibility what goes into my mouth and I understand their rules. I just wished it hadn’t happened in the first place.

KIEZA: How do you explain testing positive for Clenbuterol, which is a banned weight-stripping substance?

BROWNE: I’m guessing there must have been something in a steak I ate before the fight over there. The WBA came out last week and said the result was consistent with one small dose of Clenbuterol which means I wasn’t on it.

Five days before the fight I passed a test and I paid to have it done, why would I then take a small dose of something that is not going to help one bit for the fight, makes your heart go three times faster than normal and is then going to get you suspended from the sport? I’m guessing it was in the steak but that’s just speculation.

KIEZA: In the grand scheme of things that’s all behind you, now?

BROWNE: Yes, but I have to beat Fres Oquendo in my next fight to win the vacant title. Really I’m back at square one as a title challenger rather than the champ.

I know it never pays to be too confident in boxing because disaster can strike at any time. But you must fancy your chances against Oquendo? Every big fight he’s had — against Chagaev, Evander Holyfield, David Tua, James Toney and others — he’s come second.

Yes, I’m confident. I feel that it’s certainly an easier fight than someone like David Haye from England. But I’m happy to have an easier fight so to speak to get my title back and then I can go after the big names.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone happier than your mum, Leonie, when you arrived back at Sydney airport with the world championship belt?

Ha. I think she was happier that her photo was going to be in the paper. She sent me a copy of it the other day and said `see, I’m still semi-famous’. Seriously, though, she’s just so happy that things have worked out for me. My father Graeme died suddenly about five years ago so he didn’t get to see my success but Mum is very proud for him too.

KIEZA: Not to get too far ahead, but you must now be eyeing multi-million dollar paydays against the likes of David Haye, Tyson Fury, Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder?

BROWNE: I’d like to fight all of them, 100 per cent. I’m 37 now I don’t want to be in my 40s and still desperate for a payday. I want to make some money, make some history and then get out. I hope can make some real money and retire from boxing a happy man.

KIEZA: How important is it to fight for the title in Australia?

BROWNE: I would love it. There’s talk of fighting Haye in the UK simply because there would be a lot more money in it because boxing is such a huge sport over there. But I would love to fight Oquendo in Australia and to make some history and get the public involved. I would like my name known for all the good reasons.

KIEZA: You worked as a bouncer for many years. How long since you said “Sorry, Sir, wrong shoes.’’?

BROWNE: Four years.

KIEZA: I’m guessing you don’t miss it?

BROWNE: No. Funny that. I don’t drink and never have. So being around intoxicated people 24/7 is not my thing. Working on doors I had people come at me with broken bottles, chairs. I even got shot at once on a door in Sydney so I’m glad to be right out of that scene now.

That could be said about virtually every WBA "Regular" Title Bout in the Heavyweight division for the last several years. One of the most irrelevant titles going in Boxing at the moment. None of their recent Champions have even been in the Top 10 of any respectable rankings.

Well maybe I exaggerated a bit on that one  ...but the WBA regular belt hasn't meant much of sh*t with Ruslan Chagaev vs Fres Oquendo and all these kinda crap bouts.

Does James Toney's WBA reign even count? The result was turned to a No Contest when he beat Ruiz so I don't think his title win counts. Luis Ortiz I think was just recently upgraded from WBA Interim to WBA Regular Champion...so I guess Browne vs Oquendo is gonna be for the "Interim" version of the title.

Just when you were hoping the WBA were actually behaving half-sensibly and with a scintilla of good sense...you get this shite
To properly paraphrase the cynical/bitter Senor Mendoza the WBA thinks....

"We did not fancy getting sued so have spinelessly decided to give way rather than graciously accepting Browne's evidence or having the courage to back our own original findings in a court of law. And by the way we also think this is a shite fight that will be hard to sell!"

Nice one Gilberto, that's quite a legacy you're building there.

The WBA needs Browne.
They are stuck with a court order to give Oquendo a shot at this belt but nobody is interested in fighting him.

When Browne tested positive they sent their belt back to Chagaev, suspended Browne and moved on.
Chagaev had already decided to retire and getting the belt back wasn't enough to change his mind.
NOBODY other than Browne has shown any interest in fighting Oquendo for the vacant belt.

How else was the WBA going to get past this court mandated title fight for Oquendo?
If they don't bend the rules for Browne how do they comply with the court order?

I'm not trying to vindicate the WBA and their title belt mess but for this particular situation they are taking the only path available to them.

According to their website, Ortiz is still the WBA 'Interim' champion. He defends that title against Alexander Ustinov on November 19th.
Because of a court ruling, the WBA has declared that Lucas Browne should fight Fres Oquendo for their vacant WBA 'Regular' title. No date has been set yet.
Tyson Fury is the WBA 'Super' champion.
Maybe the WBA can create some more variants of their 'world' title!

Browne vs Oquendo will be for the regular title. That much we do know, and it sounds like someone needs to spell that out to Ortiz.

Why is the WBA allowed to get away with this b0ll0cks?

Oquendos best win was against Clifford Etienne. That fight happened before a bunch of terrorists flew planes into the Twin Towers.

Brownes 2nd best win was a close decision over Rudenko who was completely schooled in HIS next bout against a 20 year old boy with acne

Maybe Jeremy "Half Man Half Amazing" Williams will get a shot against the winner.

Anyway, Browne comes across as a decent bloke so good luck to him & I hope he gets a win then a lovely payday against Haye next year.

Looking at the above WBA rankings, where Lucas Browne is listed at #5, and factoring in Tyson Fury's withdrawn from his world title defence against Wladmir Klitschko, Browne might just find himself in the right place at the right time.

With a cloud hanging over Tyson Fury's return to the ring, the WBA could potentially at some point declare their title vacant. This would automatically raise Lucas Browne's stocks and the potential for him to meet someone for the full title should he get past Fres Oquendo.

If the WBA did declare the title vacant, Wlad would have to be in one corner. But that's probably where the certainties end. Ortiz and Ustinov are obviously well placed to be in the other. But who could foresee what other twists and turns might be in stall - particularly with the name David Haye currently at #6.

Recently?

Charr was knocked out by Briedis over a year ago.

Charr has since stopped Mazanik and beaten Seferi.
