Re: anyone else think franklin lawrence is going to spoil andy ruiz date with hughie fury?
I stated my thoughts regarding this supposed "tune up" fight a week or two back when the Hughie Fury fight was first announced as being the chief bout of the Fury - Klitschko II undercard.
At that time I was convinced that the Andy Ruiz people would have never signed to meet Lawrence had they known the offer to fight Fury was coming & I thought that they might either cancel or pull out of the fight with some minor injury of some sort. Which would conveniently be something that would require Andy to only rest/heal for long enough to miss the Lawrence fight, but not the Fury contest.
But, to my surprise, that doesn't appear to be the case. With just 48 hours til fight time, it looks like Ruiz will, indeed, fight Lawrence. Which makes me gain some respect for him. Let's just hope that there isn't a last minute opponent switch, though.
Should both Ruiz & Lawrence set foot in the ring to battle Friday night, it will be,on paper anyhow, a very significant step up in class of opponent for Ruiz. But now, I'm sorry to say, I'm beginning to wonder just how much Lawrence, well into his forties, has left after a long stretch of inactivity due to problems with the law. Is it quite possible that the Ruiz people got a good tip that Lawrence is a shot fighter & that he was looking to cash out with one last bout.
If that's the truth, then Lawrence has nothing left to offer other than his name & status as a former top ten heavyweight contender. In that case then Ruiz might be in for a short evening's work as Lawrence may decide that he doesn't want to take any unnecessary punishment & fold up quickly. Basically "putting over" Andy.
Now THAT would suck, yeah?
Hopefully, that scenario is just a product of my dark imagination & Lawrence will prove to have plenty left in his gas tank & he rolls over Ruiz. I'd love that.

I don't think Lawrence was ever a real big puncher, he'll get rooked on the cards if he wins. Ruiz has fists as pillowy as his body.

I don't look for Lawrence to get the W over Ruiz, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he gave him a hard time and supplied further evidence that Andy Ruiz isn't going too much further in his career than where he's at right now.

There was a time like 5 years ago when I really thought Lawrence deserved a big fight. He KO'd Estrada and Gavern back-to-back, and that was at a time when Gavern was semi-decent and only had 7 losses as opposed to the 21 he has today.
I dunno what happened. His career totally stalled after that and now he's 40 and his window of opportunity has passed. Very little chance he beats Ruiz, even if Ruiz does suck.

Ruiz at a career low of 219 --although he's still soft.

You're right klit!
Thought t seemed a bit far-fetched for Ruz's weight to be that in check.
