Official- Shavers the Hardest Puncher in History

Post by evrenb »

So

1. Muhammad Ali cites Shavers as the hardest puncher he ever fought and he faced Foreman, Frazier, Lyle, Norton, Cooper, Cleveland Williams among others
2. Larry Holmes says Shavers - he fought Roy Williams, Norton, Weaver, Cooney, Witherspoon, Berbick, Mercer, Bonecrusher Smith and Tyson!
3. Ron Lyle says Shavers - he fought Foreman, Bonavena (underrated puncher), Ellis (underrated puncher) , Jose Luis Garcia (underrated )
4. James Tillis say Shavers - he fought Weaver, Witherspoon, Thomas, Tyson , Gerrie Coetzee, Bruno, Mason...
5. Leroy Caldwell says Shavers - he fought Cleveland Williams, Lyle, Foreman, Urtain, Coetzee, thomas

It cant be denied. . .

Official results of fights Earnie Shavers fought with name Heavyweights who had strong chins are as follows:

Earnie Shavers hit Ron Stander -- Ron Stander hit Earnie Shavers ... Result??? ...Earnie Shavers went down and out cold

Earnie Shavers hit Jerry Quarry -- Jerry Quarry hit Earnie Shavers ... Result??? ...Earnie Shavers was stopped again

Earnie Shavers hit Tex Cobb -- Tex Cobb hit Earnie Shavers ... Result??? ...Earnie Shavers was stopped again

Earnie Shavers hit Ron Lyle -- Ron Lyle hit Earnie Shavers ... Result??? ...Earnie Shavers went out again

Earnie Shavers hit Larry Holmes -- Larry Holmes hit Earnie Shavers ... Result??? ... Earnie Shavers was stopped again

Earnie Shavers hit Bernardo Mercado -- Bernardo Mercado hit Earnie Shavers ... Result??? ...Earnie Shavers was stopped again

When you get consistent results like these against name fighters with strong chins -- It leads to only one conclusion.

One last question... Although these guys were tough - did other Heavyweights stop them??? ... YUP!!! ALL OF THEM WERE STOPPED

And about the Joe Bugner stoppage -- that was a cut eye not an ice job.

That argument is utter gobshyte and you know it. You are just trying to incite. By that theory then any puncher who ever lost wasn't a puncher. Marciano couldn't punch because he was unable to knockout Tiger Lowry where Kid Matthews could? Ali could punch harder than Frazier and Lyle because he was able to knockout Bonavena when the others never came close.
What is irrefutable is that those boxers I mentioned actually boxed Shavers so their opinions count. We all know that styles make fights and some fighters change their style mid fight once they have taken a decent shot. Your opinion, however is pretty much worthless. We can all sift through boxrec highlighting failures and inconsistencies in a fighters resume ; Leon Spinks is better than Ali? Trevor Berbick is better than Ali? No??
What the above fighters have stated is that Shavers is the hardest puncher they ever faced. It isn't a coincidence. Ok, I admit that we cannot compare to Joe Louis in this way to shavers as they fought in different eras...but never has one name come up so consistently in Heavyweight history. The fighters know best , not you.

I'd still say George Foreman, but that's only my opinion. The man really was a human wrecking ball.

Being in my top three fav fighters I have always said Foreman...some boxers have also said so....Bobby Crabtree and Bobby Hitz come to mind...I am going purely on what these other great fighters have said.

Shavers was probably the hardest puncher if he caught you. Foreman was probably second and a much better finisher.

Breaking news: This just in:

Apparently Thomas Hearns and Ernie Shavers could not hit! This based on the fact that they could be hit.

That is all.

Any fighter who says Shavers hit hardest??? ... They only say that based on his overblown reputation and the fact that they beat him... They're not going to say somebody who crushed them is the hardest puncher they fought -- they would rather remind you of their WINS than their losses. Ron Stander was 1 of the easiest guys to hit you ever saw -- yet he absorbed everything the much more experienced Shavers threw and KTFO of him.. Iced him in fact.

Kalan...how do you know yo daddy is yo daddy?

Cuz Yo Mamma told you so.

That's also how you know that Shavers hits as hard as he did....the guys who were hit by him reporting out.

Unless we need to change this because YOU know more than they do.

Admittedly I am one of the folks who thinks George Foreman may actually be the one deserving of this nod, but the preponderance of the evidence supports Ernie.

Despite your (or my) expert opinion.

Your mother may well insist her husband is your dad... Even if she suspected it was somebody she met while he was away for a weekend.

You see...people LIE!!! ... People want to make themselves look better, so if they knocked Earnie Shavers out they'll say he punched the hardest.

Rather than the guy who clobbered them.

In January 2000 Earnie Shavers was officially named as the ‘hardest hitting heavyweight ever’ by the IBA.
He was presented with an award by IBA president Dean Chance.

It still seems to me that Kalan is factoring in that Shavers could be hit, and be vulnerable, and factoring that into the equation that it somehow affected his hitting power.

Am I just tuned in wrong...or is he repeating this notion on more than one occasion?

Seems there is cross circuit reasoning going on. Granted Shavers was also vulnerable...and often could not parlay this power into total success, but I don't think that would lighten the punches that landed on iota.

Maybe Kalan's just a low power FM station, and I'm out too far in the wilderness to receive the full bandwidth....cuz I don't seem to be gettin' the clear stereo signal.

you forgot James "Quick "Tillis
who also writes it as a blurb on the cover of his autobiography.
(and a strange discription as to how the punch felt)

Chopping wood, according to his autobiography. Something about last minute flicking of the wrist etc.

Well,
thats part of it (for the snapping of the wrists part) but not where the real power came from,
he developed that earlier in his youth from doing something else.

I usually don't go by what boxers say about other boxers, as my stated reason is that it turns into a popularity contest.

But in this case, saying Shavers is the hardest puncher is a very reasonable choice. I'd have Foreman edge out Shavers in power by a hair, but either is a good pick.

It cant be denied. . .

Could you repeat who made it 'official " again ?

and it can be denied you know .
most of those fighters cited boxing careers go back 40 to 50 years ago.
What about punchers from John L. Sullivan to Rocky Marciano era's ?
that would be about at least about 75 years.
