Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
He was a two-time national amateur Super-Heavyweight champion and is now 14-0 and campaigning as a cruiserweight...I see that most of his fights are staged in his home area of southern Oregon but it seems to me he is of worthwhile consideration as a potential star.
Re: Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
I think you answered your question when you said all of his fights have been in Southern Oregon. Not exactly a hot bed of Boxing. Most people probably have never seen him fight.

I've heard of him because I followed the amateurs closely when he was one of the elite US guys at his weight, but this may well be the first time I've seen a reference to his pro career. Seems like he's been handled pretty badly since turning pro...

The same reason, no one talks about Artur Beterbiev as much as Kovalev, even though he's 10-0 with 10KOs and owned "Cesario" Kovalev in the amateurs.

He's a 33 year old local bum-crusher. How much hype were you expecting?

Re: Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
Didn't he fail a drug test? Hasn't he had an 18 months layoff, followed by a two-year lay-off? Only competes against cab drivers? Is managed and promoted by people none one has ever heard of? Headlining fight cards staged exclusively in his hometown of Oregon? Hasn't he got a terrible fighting style? How can be considered as a "potential star", when he's been a pro for seven years?
I have no idea who Mike Wilson is, but five minutes of Googling him tells me that he's not worth investing interest in yet.

Re: Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
His record is hardly inspiring. Pretty much a journeyman record so far.

A super heavyweight campaigning as a cruiserweight isn't as interesting as a cruiserweight campaigning as a heavyweight.

Re: Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
Looks like he's been weighing in the low 190s for cruiserweight fights, so he could probably drop to LHW pretty easily. Which he may want to do considering how little attention cruiserweights get in the US.
Re: Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
He hasn't fought a non-bum in his entire 7-year career, if you could call it a career. He doesn't deserve the interest of boxing fans, and I can guarantee with absolute certainty that he will never achieve anything.
Please don't compare Mike Wilson to Artur Beterbiev. Mike Wilson has never fought anyone in the division's top 140. He is a 7-year pro and 33 years old. Artur Beterbiev wiped the floor with Tavoris Cloud with 16 months of turning pro.IKSRTFO wrote:The same reason, no one talks about Artur Beterbiev as much as Kovalev, even though he's 10-0 with 10KOs and owned "Cesario" Kovalev in the amateurs.

The struggle of good boxers who don't land with a big promoter. Mike was a really good amateur. I remember him making a post about four years ago asking for help getting fights, saying none of the big promoters were interested and he couldn't land any fights. Felt bad for him because he just seems to have been lost in the shuffle. Nothing has changed so he's doing the best he can.

Yeah disappointing as a pro somewhat but like you are saying it is due to promotion or lack there of. He was a two time National Super Heavy Champ. Beat everyone in Open Division and fought top competition Internationally. Lost an extremely close decision in Olympic Trials. Would hAve been a three time National Champ but came up with Mary Joe in his system. Hell, he even fought in Australia for a
Few years. If he could somehow get
ESPN to go to Oregon he could become a local attraction. Needs to make whatever move really soon.

Re: Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
It has always been strange to me that people are not interested on the cruiserweight division. People are interested in the big dudes on heavyweight. With the ever growing size of boxers there it has become quite the circus act. It just not pretty anymore. Giants don't move that well and look less skilled than the old champs.
At the same time cruiser is packed with talent and good boxers in great shape. Some of the best boxing happens there. It would be even better if guys like Haye, Adamek and Cunningham would have stayed where their natural weight is.
I think cruiser would be the best division if people just put their interest and money there.

It seems to me that the fact that he was a TWO time national super heavyweight champion would be enough to cause a buzz let alone that he dropped and continues to campaign as a cruiserweight and is undefeated at that weight. Yet he continues to be an unknown.

Between the 22nd November, 2009 and the 10th April, 2015… a time period spanning almost five years and five months… Mike “White Delight” Wilson only fought six times, against men that held a combined total of 27 victories over 69 fights.actjac wrote:It seems to me that the fact that he was a TWO time national super heavyweight champion would be enough to cause a buzz let alone that he dropped and continues to campaign as a cruiserweight and is undefeated at that weight. The career highlights that Wilson enjoyed during this 5½ year "golden" period, include victories over the likes of (records quoted at the time of these fights):
• Khuzaymah Al Nubu (2 fights; 2 losses)
• Harry Gopaul (4 fights; 3 losses)
• Jae Bryce (1 fight; 1 win)
• Joseph Rabotte (32 fights; 11 wins)
The next time Mike “White Delight” Wilson steps foot in the ring, he would have been a professional boxer for more than seven years (so he's not a novice)... and his next opponents is a man that has not scored a stoppage victory in almost seven years - having only managed two victories since the start of the decade.

You would think that at his age it would be time to step up the level of competition and also try to make a buck rather than be satisfied to toil his craft in Medford, Oregon for nickels.
Re: Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
He's 34 and hasn't done sh*t. There is no reason why you should be surprised that nobody wants to talk about him. Not to mention that this dude has been professional since 2009, and it took him 8 years just to accomplish nothing. Imagine what he can do in the next 8 years at the same rate of improvement -- nothing. It should be obvious that he isn't worth talking about. There are boxers on my watch list who are 17-19 years old and have much better professional wins.
Re: Why no interest or discussion of undefeated Mike Wilson?
He needed majority decision in the home ring to get a win against a guy with 11-20-1 record

Sorry about all the rather harsh responses that you're getting actjac, but they're realistic ones.actjac wrote:He was a two-time national amateur Super-Heavyweight champion and is now 14-0 and campaigning as a cruiserweight...I see that most of his fights are staged in his home area of southern Oregon but it seems to me he is of worthwhile consideration as a potential star.
Wilson just doesn't have the type of fan friendly style that translates well to the pros. And he doesn't come from an area of the country that is going to generate any interest from the big promoters as far as potential ticket sales are concerned. He'd be a tough sell had he remained at heavyweight but the fact that he moved down to compete as a cruiserweight only exacerbates his issues.
I hope for his sake that he can get a meaningful fight against someone in the top ten but in order to do that, he'll likely have to go on the road & compete in Europe where the bulk of the premiere cruiserweights are these days. It'll be a risky proposition in order to do so because it's tough to get a win overseas. Especially when he isn't much of a puncher but if he believes in his skills then it's a gamble that he most likely needs to take now before they begin to diminish due to advancing age.
