R.I.P. Darren Sutherland

Reading about Darren's depression is terribly sad and is something I can relate to having been there myself. It's a horrendous this to suffer with and I wouldn't wish it on anybody. It is the loneliest thing I have ever experienced and the cruellest thing about it is that it takes away all self-confidence and hope, whilst those things are the very things that are needed if you are to recover.

I was really saddened to read that he had an appointment with a psychologist the day he died. It was seeing one that ultimately led to my recovery despite my belief that it was a lost cause. I feel really sad for his family and friends as it is so hard to understand unless you've been there.

At the very least I hope this can raise awareness about how serious an illness depression is, especially for young men who may well feel they have nobody to turn to.

Thank you for sharing that with us Matt, its not easy to admit openly you have had to have psychiatric help or needed to see psychologist at some time in your life. Having a breakdown myself made me better qualified to help others suffering depression, which can lead to a breakdown or even suicide. Waylon.

I wonder if it was tough for him living in London? It can be such a strange, confusing place and it can be hard to get your bearings. Everyone seems to be in such a mad rush down south, with their own agenda and it's easy to feel like an outsider, to be out of sorts and feeling left behind down there. From my experience, anyway.

Darrens body will repose in Fitzsimons Fureral Home in Navan tomorrow from Noon until 7 pm and the public are invited to come and pay their respects to Darren.

Darrens funeral mass will take place at 11 am on monday in St Mary's church in Navan ,with burial afterwards in St Finians cemetary

I haven't had chance to come on here for a little while so I'm a little late with this but I would just like to say thanks to the kind comments from Waylon, Bigmark & Stu. I'm not one to fear what others think of me so I'm not afraid to admit what I went through (although given society's general misuunderstanding of the condition I fully understand why others wouldn't like to talk about it).

Contrary to what is perhaps the common perception I know just how strong you have to be to recover from it and that self-knowledge for me outweighs any possible misconceptions people may have about me just because I suffered with it.

Thanks again guys, the boxing fraternity includes many great people and I'm proud to be part of it

I actually think a person who is so very depressed that they have taken their own life - is actually brave. They know the consequences it is going to have on their family and friends, but feel there is no way out of their current lifestyle. I've counselled depressed people and often hear "I would kill myself if I was braver"

It sounds perverse but I agree with this. I must stress that I don't mean to suggest that suicide is in any way laudable - it is always a tragic waste - but when at your lowest point you can actually feel more of a coward for not doing it, and for the ongoing suffering to yourself and those close to you that continuing to live with depression can cause. That depression causes such warped thinking, and actions, highlights that it is a serious illness and not something that can be 'snapped out of.'

I'm not going to go all 'Airplane' on you so will leave it there, but will leave it by echoing what Gareth has said in an excellent post on another thread - if you or anyone you know think you might be suffering with this, please get help. You can get through it and life can be better than it ever was before.

7 years ago today. An amazing talent and truly missed by many. 4-0 with 4 knockouts. Also 4 wins against James Degale in the amateurs. His style was somewhat suited to the pros and could have gone far.

He was an excellent prospect. Compact, well balanced, methodical and hard hitting. There would've been plenty of opportunity, challenge Froch or continue the rivalry with Degale.

He was really humble and charismatic as well. It was a big loss, shocking at the time.

I had a few family and friends die around the same time so was quite a strange time for me, heard about Darren in the pub and it quite honestly knocked me sideways, can be a very lonely game can boxing at times.

The way DeGale reacted and celebrated and commemorated Darren on his shorts for fights and in his words made me an instant fan. Pure class from the man - he didn't have to do those things

DeGale put rivalry to one side and made time to commemorate a fallen former rival - RIP Darren

Very sad RIP,cant believe its that long already,i wasnt a member here either but i remember it well,i'd been out on the lash all weekend from the friday until the tuesday,hadnt a slept a wink and got kicked out from the mrs,i remember going to my mums house out of my nut to watch the 1st Fury/McDermott fight,when i finally woke up on the wednesday i seen the news about Darren

Yes, so many fighters come across as obnoxious, others just love talking about themselves - but unlike so many Sutherland seemed really down to earth and was a fighter you could actually enjoy listening to in the interviews.
