Liam Smith (c) vs. Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez - September 17th 2016
Re: Liam Smith (c) vs. Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez - September 17th 2016
Really want Liam to win this but i think he'll just be covering up the whole fight. I've got Canelo winning this 8 rounds to 4 UD

Is Canelo really that good against people the same size as him?
I don't think Smith will win, because he's never going to get the decision, but i don't think he's going to be blasted away in a couple of rounds. He's a genuine LMW, has decent foundations and should be able to manage himself in the ring.
Wide points loss for me, possibly 10/2, 9/3

I think it's a little harsh to say he's only good because of his size relative to his opponents. He has good counter punching ability and his combination punching is very good.freddydoesdallas wrote:Is Canelo really that good against people the same size as him?

You have to remember aswell that he's beaten Trout, Lara, Angulo, Kirkland and Cotto (I think Size was more important in the last fight mentioned)
His experience of top level competition generally including fighting Mayweather is so superior to Smith it's unreal.

I think you're being slightly generous to Alvarez there. He has built his career on catchweights and not actually bothering to make weight so i think it's safe to say that his team have concerns about his ability to face opponents at the full weight.lefty wrote:I think it's a little harsh to say he's only good because of his size relative to his opponents. I'm not doubting that he's faced better opposition than Smith, there's no competition there. It's whether or not his stock is artificially increased by constantly facing blown up fighters or forcing them into silly weight categories. I say force purposefully as his team have the financial clout to do this

He fought most of those guys at their natural weights to be honest. 155 for Cotto was fair since they had to be above 154. Kirkland, Lara, Khan and Angulo were at 155.
I honestly think he's coming in at 155 for this one. Just has to throw Smith another 300-400k which is pennies to Canelo. As if Gallagher is going to walk away from a nice cut of that money.

I'm with you on that. I don't think he'll come in on weight either. The ones you all mention though were still above the 154 limit. If it's no big deal then he should have stuck to 154, as he keeps moving it there must be a reason.TheLeprechaun wrote:freddydoesdallas wrote:I think you're being slightly generous to Alvarez there. I think he wants to make 154 for political reasons, if he can't make 154 like he hasn't for a few years now, then there's simply no hiding from the fact he's a full on Middleweight and it gives ground away to GGG in the negotiations.
I've got a feeling Canelo might end up as weight drained as he was for Floyd by making 154 and that will give Smith a real chance.

Can Canelo have taken an awful lot away from the Mayweather fight? My recollection is he got slapped about more than most in that fight.lefty wrote:I think it's a little harsh to say he's only good because of his size relative to his opponents. All I’ve ever heard about Liam Smith is how good he is and how he’s the most talented one of the bunch. Having said this though, people keep question Canelo even when he keeps getting the results. I think Smith has a great chance personally.
Re: Liam Smith (c) vs. Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez - September 17th 2016
I've not got the raps on Canelo a lot of others have ,, I agree he likes to be the bigger man and gets away with Canelo weight all the time ,, faced with a skillful boxer in floyd he failed ,, But on the other hand there is a big difference between Levels here ..
Canelo easy ... Hope i'm wrong though

Funnily enough, I was thinking the same thing. When's the weigh-in?freddydoesdallas wrote:I like that train of thought RickyRicky_ wrote:TheLeprechaun wrote:

Smith makes the weight fine too.
Liam looks as fit as a fiddle.

Canelo just looks so much more solid than Liam. I think it'll be a late stoppage win for Alvarez, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Nah bother, sorted now, just me being a numpty
Re: Liam Smith (c) vs. Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez - September 17th 2016
When this fight was announced I gave Smith about a 5% chance of winning. I'm not saying I thought he'd get blown out. Just that I can't see how he would be able to better Canelo.
But after listening to Steve Bunce & Co for the last half hour I am convinced he's going to beat the sh!t out of Ginger

Lets see how long the "most intelligent" Smith is going to last. And what makes him the most intelligent, where are the evidence? "Gymnasium" rumors? As long as I have been watching boxing I have yet to see a gym rumor come true.
